Insurgent Dem. takes off in Montana Senate primary

Posted by Don Hazen at 9:00 AM on May 29, 2006.

Many people understand that to make progress in politics, you have to break some eggs, sometimes in Democratic primaries. Senate candidate Jon Tester is doing just that in Montana, and succeeding.

Many people understand that to make progress in politics, you have to break some eggs. Conservative incumbents -- who play safe, and run to the middle of the road (where Jim Hightower is fond of saying there are only yellow stripes and dead armadillos) -- they have to be run at, have to be challenged and whacked. This is akin to what is going on in Connecticut, where the Republican's favorite Democrat, Joe Lieberman, is getting a heavy does of political reality 2006 style. Ned Lamont is nipping at King Joe's heels. The party Establishment, the Republicans, and the media are very aggressively tripping over each other trying to come to the rescue -- especially Hillary Clinton.

In Montana there is a shiny new governor, Brian Schweitzer, who is showing the smarts to be a popular populist, in similar ways that Bernie Sanders earned the respect of conservatives all over Vermont -- telling the truth and working his butt off for the little guy. Enter Jon Tester.

Very recent polls show Tester within one point of his primary opponent, John Morrison, and then beating the odious, scandal ridden Conrad Burns in the general. Burns, you may recall, received more contributions from Jack Abramoff and his clients than any other member of Congress. Tester, according to Matt Singer, a blogger at Left in the West, is a real progressive, supporting health care for all, opposed the energy bill, the bankruptcy bill, and CAFTA, in contrast to his opponent:

"Jon Tester got contraceptive equity done in Montana and has a 100% from MT NARAL the last 3 legislative sessions. John Morrison campaigned on contraceptive equity then refused to act, fearing being tied to 'radical' groups like NARAL."

"Jon Tester has called for a withdrawal from Iraq and refocusing on the real enemy. John Morrison waffles on withdrawal and says simply that our policy should be encouraging the Iraqis to start a national oil company."

If you are interested in this race, check out Act Blue. The time is now. This is the home stretch... And while AlterNet can make no political endorsements, I met and chatted up Tester at a party for him and Minnesota Secretary of State star candidate Mark Ritchie, at Annie Hess and Craig Kaplan's spring Manhattan event. He is a cool dude.

Digg!

It is encouraging that a liberal Democrat is making headway. It is discouraging that he has to fight the Democratic leadership. It points up the fact that the Democratic leadership is Republican Lite. The Democrats serve the same corporate establishment that the Republicans do.

The trouble with liberals and the labor unions is that they are loyal=stupid. As long as we persist in blind loyalty to the Democratic party they'll take us for granted and the Republicans will write us off. We must tell both parties that they can earn our support and force them to compete for our votes, click on Do it now.

Glad to see enough of the people feel the same way. Anger is the first step in healing, so it appears America is healing herself. Its way past time to do so. Go, Tesler, go Montana!!!! I can hardly wait.

The first thing I would want to see happen is to reverse all this police state stuff that has come into play, reverse the executive orders, take all that licensing of animals out of the bills, kill the Patriot Act as its now constituted, purge the bureaucracy at the FDA, NSA, CIA, MILITARY, and State dept.

Bring them all to account, open up the public records that were sealed and finally expose all the corruption and then begin impeachments (notice the plural there, LOL). Then maybe we can start to deal with real issues.

Jon Tester's Primary test is one week from today, June 6! Please help in any way you can. If Jon Tester wins the Primary, he WILL be the new U. S. Senator from Montana, replacing Abramoff-tainted Conrad Burns, who Time magazine labeled one of the five worst sitting U. S. Senators in the USA.

Send money if you can to Tester for Senate, and email or call everyone you know in Montana. This race is definitely winnable if we do our job. Tester has done his job brilliantly. Now it is our turn.

Please help today! Jim Toevs

It might be worth noting that Tester's first (& probably largest) fund-raiser was a nearly-sold out concert by Pearl Jam at the U of M in Missoula this past autumn. Jeff Ament, the band's bass player, grew up in Big Sandy with Tester. I look forward to voting for Tester in one week. Among other things, I like the fact that he's from Eastern Montana, taught music & is a farmer. GOOOOO Tester!!!

Paul Richards is greener than Tester, and was brave enough to speak out against the Iraq war when Tester was still "testing" the waters of public opinion. Jon's got the momentum, and I hope he beats Morrison.
