Still the Man of the Hour, Colbert's performance continues to be discussed all over the place. On last night's The Daily Show, Jon Stewart described it as "ballsalicious." Salon's Michael Scherer gives it a stellar review, calling it "Colbert's crowning moment" and "a brilliant performance" that "unplugged the Bush myth machine--and left the clueless D.C. press corps gaping."

The New Republic's Noam Scheiber was far less enthusiastic, and, aside from not finding it funny himself, accuses those of us who did of providing "evidence of a new Stalinist aesthetic on the left--until recently more common on the right--wherein the political content of a performance or work of art is actually more important than its entertainment value." Okay. It's certainly an interesting position, anyway. If I don't think it's funny, anyone who claims they do is really just an agitprop-loving crypto-Stalinist. Yowza. Atrios provides a helpful explanation as to how others might genuinely have found Colbert's performance amusing.

And Think Progress points to an article in U.S. News & World Report that confirms Bush, along with some of his staff and aides were decidedly unhappy with the tenor of Colbert's routine.

Comedy Central star Stephen Colbert's biting routine at the White House Correspondents Association dinner won a rare silent protest from Bush aides and supporters Saturday when several independently left before he finished.

"Colbert crossed the line," said one top Bush aide, who rushed out of the hotel as soon as Colbert finished. Another said that the president was visibly angered by the sharp lines that kept coming.

"I've been there before, and I can see that he is [angry]," said a former top aide. "He's got that look that he's ready to blow."

Ha. Awesome. Ballsalicious indeed!

If you still haven't seen Colbert's vicious take-down of Bush and the press, go here. And if you'd like to say thanks to the newest lefty folk hero, go here.

Yeah, haven't there been periodical articles that quote anonymous staffers saying how they tiptoe around the man so as not to make him angry? I bet anyone tasked with calming Georgie down doesn't have a lot of love for Colbert right now, even if they actually agree with what he said.

Finally, someone has risen from the masses with balls big enough to tell Mr Bush, to his face, what a horrific president he has been. Someone with this grace under fire, wit and intelligence should be President. If a Bush made it to the office and he is a complete joke, why can't a comic be qualified!

Humor explained

The people who are saying it just wasn't funny are either hurt because Colbert made fun of their beloved president; hurt because it made fun of mainstream news media as compliant, incurious, and complicit in the crimes of the administration; or unable to comprehend that nebulous concept known as 'satire'. They have a right to think it wasn't funny, but it was most definitely humor. One of the things that makes jokes work for a stand-up comic is the element of truth, or familiarity, that the audience recognizes. It's the "Did ya ever...?" or "Ya know how there's...?" that the audience nods and laughs at. Colbert pointed to what we all know--Bush is full of crap and the inexplicably lazy news media just echo that crap. And for those of us who have long been aware that Bush is full of crap, it's awfully hard to take. Colbert was able to make it funny. If you can't get rid of the crap, there's some relief in at least being able to laugh at it.

For the White House correspondents and those who rush to their defense, Bush's crap is the elephant in the living room. Colbert just put a funny hat on the elephant and made a joke about how dignified the elephant looked. And then he made another joke about the correspondents not noticing that the elephant was sitting on their lap.

The mainstream news media get to ignore the elephant 364 days a year. They should be forced to acknowledge it at least this one time.

The next president that is actually elected should give Colbert and Helen Thomas a medal, assuming we have any more elections or opportunities for Diebold or someone else to corrupt the results. Diebold will be synonymous with crooked elections from now on. We should be able to demand a hand counted, paper ballot at the polls. Shrub had better get used to being angry with the future he faces if he can't put off the election or cheat at the polls to prevent oversight and investigation. Job Well Done, Stephen Colbert and Helen Thomas. Anyone know if this WH event will be rebroadcast? I saved a picture of Shrub and the First Witch at the Coretta King funeral when the "Billions for war and none for the poor", statement was made. Their expressions will be frozen like that in the future. When it comes down to it, Stephen Colbert and Helen Thomas are braver than the generals that wouldn't speak up when Shrub took our troops to HIS War.

Am I alone or did we just witness the assasination of the President and the Washington Press Corps? Colbert hit them right between the eyes. He declared the Emperor and the "Free Press" were wearing no clothes right to their faces at their chummy little Correspondent's Dinner where they thought he would be appropriately grateful to be counted amongst them. He pulled not one punch and gave them not one shred of their clothing back. So incisively funny they still don't know what hit them. Colbert, thou art Satire.

Stephen Colbert. It was more than satire...it was the goddam truth! And the MSM can't handle the truth! Too bad Laura and George didn't choke on their prime rib. For all the damage this arrogant bastard has done to this country and the world, a more fitting tribute would have been a raw egg in his face. I'm throwing the biggest party this nation has ever seen the day these criminals in the White House are locked up and stripped of all their ill-gotten wealth. And America, you are all invited!
