Pop star rips Bush a new one

Posted by Laura Barcella at 12:15 PM on April 12, 2006.

Thanks, Pink.

Once upon a time, as a fresh-faced college graduate in the year 2000, I landed a job as an editor at a teen magazine in NYC. My job was to interview and write about all the bubbly blond celebrities coming down the pike. These were the days of Britney and Justin (together! forever in love! and virginal!), the Backstreet Boys, and Mandy Moore -- when she was all of (eeeeep) fifteen years old.

One day, a crazy new pop act calling herself "Pink" came to our office for an interview. She was small and charming, with short platinum blond hair and an actual brain, which she actually -- shockingly -- ventured to use during the course of our interview. (See, most of the new wannabe celebrities we interviewed had been thoroughly trained by their PR peeps before coming to us. They said and did little beyond smiling, nodding, tossing their hair around and professing their bountiful love of singing.)

Anyway, Pink was the first -- and only -- burgeoning celebrity I'd met at that point who seemed bright and passionate enough to get somewhere. Thankfully, she didn't seem "trained." She spoke openly about her sordid past as a crazy club kid in Philadelphia, about her adolescent dalliances with hardcore drugs and about how -- and why -- she wanted to make it. She said she wanted to help empower other young women, which I found impressive.

And she wrote most of her own music, which was -- seriously -- a big deal among teenybop pop tarts back then. She actually seemed, well, cool.

Sure, her songs were kinda cheesy. But she had a pretty voice, and at least she was writing her stuff herself, and she cared about something bigger than, well, her own rising fame and fortune. (Oh, and lest I forget -- she complimented me on my hair, which was platinum with, yes, pink streaks back then.)

In the last six years, Pink has become a full-fledged pop star, floating in and out of the Billboard charts as well as the tabloids. She's made a name for herself as a smart and outspoken singer-songwriter who dares to broach subjects like body image, domestic abuse and, now, the sheer incompetence of president Bush.

Yes...her new song, "Dear Mr. President," swiftly and sadly rips George W. a new one -- about his war in Iraq, his treatment of Cindy Sheehan, and his avoidance of domestic issues like homelessness. Check out the lyrics below, and isten to it here...

"Dear Mr. President" (feat. Indigo Girls)

Dear Mr. President

Come take a walk with me

Let's pretend we're just two people and

You're not better than me

I'd like to ask you some questions if we can speak honestly

What do you feel when you see all the homeless on the street

Who do you pray for at night before you go to sleep

What do you feel when you look in the mirror

Are you proud

How do you sleep while the rest of us cry

How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye

How do you walk with your head held high

Can you even look me in the eye

And tell me why

Dear Mr. President

Were you a lonely boy

Are you a lonely boy

How can you say

No child is left behind

We're not dumb and we're not blind

They're all sitting in your cells

While you pay the road to hell

What kind of father would take his own daughter's rights away

And what kind of father might hate his own daughter if she were gay

I can only imagine what the first lady has to say

You've come a long way from whiskey and cocaine

How do you sleep while the rest of us cry

How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye

How do you walk with your head held high

Can you even look me in the eye

Let me tell you bout hard work

Minimum wage with a baby on the way

Let me tell you bout hard work

Rebuilding your house after the bombs took them away

Let me tell you bout hard work

Building a bed out of a cardboard box

Let me tell you bout hard work

You don't know nothing bout hard work...

How do you sleep at night

How do you walk with your head held high

Dear Mr. President

You'd never take a walk with me

Would you?

Digg!

Why do I have to keep giving grudging respect to all these people who I otherwise find utterly repugnant... the Dixie Chicks, Kanye West, Jay Z, and now Pink!

Well, I guess when something becomes this obvious...

Their new one "Not Ready to Make Nice" should be the Progressive anthem of the moment. I hope enough people buy the album when it's released on May 23rd so the corporate ran radio plays it (you know, they only answer to the alimighty $$$). You can hear it live on their website www.dixiechicks.com

Dare I suggest that artists like Pink are simply taking advantage of a horrible situation? I especially loved how many artists came forward to "help" after the Ultra-High Profile Tsunami but actually donated little and disappeared soon after they had put in an appearance. I for one haven't any more respect for Pink, JayZ or any other artist that is profiteering from the carnage in Iraq. Yes Bravo Pink - that was very touching but I doubt we'll hear anything further from her regarding less high profile humanitarian situations like impending drought and famine in Ethiopia or continued human rights abuses in North korea. In many ways I think much less of her now than I did before (if that is possible)These people can pucker up and kiss my ass!!!!

Another "celeb" (used loosely here) hates a Republican. Go figure.
Notice I didnt say conservative- Bush is only a partial conservative- but that is a different debate for another forum.

If she didnt have her "hit" she'd be standing in line with the other losers trying to get into the latest dance club and blowin crack dealers.

Loved the name, forever.
Admired the package, too.
Was not familiar/had not paid attention to her work.

If this song to the President is the only song she ever wrote or sang in her life, she would have my respect and gratitude not because of her beauty, but because of what is between her ears. Now I like her voice, too.

Dear Mr. President is one of the most amazing songs I have ever heard--it blew me away, and still does. The eloquence of her using the last two words "Would you?" to rightly call Bush a coward was the perfectly understated crowning touch.

I predict it will become a cult-like hit in spite of the msm, not because of it. I mean, has anyone heard it played on radio or performed on national TV? I haven't, and am not holding my breath that I will. Thanks Alternet. Color me a Pink fan.
Regards,,,John

Poets around here...

FINALLY!! Popular artists are beginning to voice their opinions and not hiding behind political correctness and PR hacks. I disagree with the above comments about artists "capitalizing" on the current situation. With the recent consolidation of the media by politically connected faceless corporations, a politically charged media product could spell career death for an artist. It is even MORE gutsy for an artist today to protest than it was in the '60s. Take the Dixie Chicks, for example. After Natalie Maines said that she was ashamed that Bush was from Texas, Clear Channel simultaneously banned the Dixie Chicks from their stations AND organized pro-war rallies. Protesting against this administration is an invitation to economic and career endangerment (ask Ward Churchill). The Republican Noise Machine is always well-oiled and ready to strike.

I'm proud of my fellow Philadelphian Pink (even though I'm not a fan, really), for taking a stand. I've been quoting Bruce Springsteen for the last 3 years: "the poets around here don't write nothing at all, they just stand back and let it all be." I was beginning to think that popular artists were going to remain silent so they can be safe and produce money-making hits. I hope to see more acts like Pink speak out against this administration - or any administration for that matter.

Un-original song, typical theme and message (minor celeb disses Republican tyrant a la Eminem) and a host of "progressive" children hyping the "genius" of a girl who is clearly exploiting a cause celebre. Funny I didn't hear word one from her before 2006 . . . I guess the body count had to reach 2500+ before it became an issue serious enough to address. So if Pink represents the soulful, good part of America Prophit, and I represent the slimy, heartless contingent then let me be the slimiest American to walk the face of the earth because if having a soul means I should ally myself with clearly mentally deficient people like you then I prefer to stay under my rock and leave the high road to "intellectuals" like you and Pink. Thank God I have a Brazilian and Argentinian passport!!

Which is, despite Hollywood corn, my favourite movie now, having brought on my epiphany re connexions b/t:
- the Shrubbery
- dupes who believe Bush speeches even after caught lying over and over, they simply can't get their poor brains around an America acting just like the bad guys.
- the Corporatzi who own the government: fed, state, local; including the six "Media Conglamourates" - that - until a turning point last year - dared never raise dissent above the slightest whisper enough to prove we still had "free speech".
- the whirling crazy-quilt of American Itsurgentcy - the "Opposition", "Revolution"...or "Us": a quasi-insurgency which could become a real one IF it can get past the point of simply rooftop-shouting "It's urgent, see?", and face the ugly fact that a true revolution means sacrifice: of convenience, of some sacred ideals, and sometimes of life, whether by giving it up in obsessive devotion or laying it down in response to enemy demands rather than surrendering to it.

I hear complaints that the opposition is ignored by MSM, marginalised. I hear complaints that the opposition is embraced by MSM and thus watered down, defanged. I saw signs of both, and did not know what to think. Until after that film.

It's so simple: the revolution will be televised, so to speak, when people want to buy it. That's all.

Commercialisation neither despoils it nor empowers it by default. It can help to empower enough that I threw away a lot of my disdain for "sellout rebellion". Celebrities going progressive is good. I am no longer confused here. It is not THE answer, but no longer is it a question, either.

America pays more attention to its pop and film stars, models and mavens than to politicians. So if celebs call attention to what's normally ignored, I'm cheering, damn it, even though I always HATED pop music.

If Pink makes her media megacorp money, and it makes HER money; great! If the Wachowskis convinced Warner that such a subversive film (w/ blatant "9/11 = inside job" referents) would have an audience, and subsequently it was run, and sent a message to the corp-owned regime that the public is not buying the "freedom swap for security" rap, let them make money off the opposition!

Let them sell our precious revolution. Because if no-one can profit from it, who'll bother? The opposition will go hungry, and then, silent. "They" wouldn't even have to silence us; we'd bring it on ourselves with our no-longer-all-that-funny "punk attitude" of "everything is fake, false, phony! Believe nothing, bother with nothing".

NEVER forget to QUESTION EVERYTHING, even what you love and believe in, but don't assume that an imperfect revolution's not better than none at all. THAT SAID: we DO need a REAL insurgency.

Speak truth to power? Waste of breath.
Wreak power from truth.
Why? Life beats Death.
How? Sacrifice: convenience, security, time.
Take risks. Give love.
When? Now.
Who? You.

SO it's pretty obvious what a little bitch you are at this point. I will be back here over and over again to antagonize you. I can create X number of emails and I will do so just to point out what a little prick you are. Alternet ultimately ends up being the same kind of censored bullshit you people spend your time railing against in perpetuity doesn't it Joshy boy? I can imagine you as being the kind of little boy who ran off to hide behind the teacher's skirt, crying because somebody called you a "bad" name. Well unfortunately for you Josh life is like that and little boys like you won't always be able to hide behind your little administrative privileges that you have here at Fascistnet.org. Yeah that little girl was a bimbo and you are a fucking hypocrite for making insulting comments about the "quality" music of Pink just like I did. Good for you Josh. I'm sure Pink will be happy to know that Josh is there to smite her detractors and those morons who think she is doing something other than profiting from a horrible situation. Just remember you little penis, you can run and hide from your detractors here but someday little whiners like you will actually have to stand up and take action. Funny, you don't seem like the type to me at all. You'll vote Dems in '08 like a good little robot and go on whining about one thing or another until you wake up at age 80 and realize you have accmplished absolutely nothing.

You will see in one of my replies to your other post (he lied again) that I participate here, albeit not in the way little girls like you prefer, but I have also actually gotten off my ass and done something here in Argentina. Sorry that my gruff language and mannerisms offend your little bitch-ass-trick sensibilities. Here is what I am doing to make a difference Josh: I immunized over 200 Argentinian children this month and over this Easter holiday I will feed about the same amount of hungry mothers and children. Want to know how I do it? With the same capitalist system that pussies like you whine about. I buy Peruvian and Bolivian handicrafts at a fair price (meaning well above market price) and sell them here and in the other countries for a nice profit, 50% of which I donate directly to charity. I take Alpaca sweaters made in Peru or Bolivia, pay the indigenous people a very fair price so they too can profit, and then I sell those same goods to American and European tourists who love it.

I am not privileged like your protector Daniel Shays implies. I came to Argentina with $5000 in my pocket and still don't have much money to my name. I decided several years ago that losers like you will always be bitching and moaning but never actually doing anything except moderating. I have heard all kinds of insults from Americans over the last few years like "You cut and ran", or "you are a coward for giving up" but the fact of the matter is I just got sick of people like you! American robots - universally reviled in the world with their dead-end, violent culture and celebrity worship. America has been on the decline for quite some time and it is because of BIG TIME activists like you Josh. You have never accomplished shit in your life and probably never will. I will be thinking of you bitching and complaining while I actually make a difference for people who give a shit. America and Americans are doomed. Good luck America - you're going to need it!!!

Masters of War
by Bob Dylan

Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build the big bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks

You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly

Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain

You fasten the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud

You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins

How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do

Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul

And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand o'er your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead
