McKinney, a racist?

Posted by Jan Frel at 3:24 PM on April 5, 2006.

Are we witnessing the beginnings of an insanity plea strategy for Tom DeLay and his legal problems?

"Cynthia McKinney is a racist. She has a long history of racism. Everything is racism with her. This is incredible arrogance that sometimes hits these members of Congress, but especially Cynthia McKinney." -- That's Tom DeLay on Rep. McKinney's run-in with a Capitol police officer, only a short time removed from announcing he's resigning from Congress. Kind of a crazy thing to say, don'tcha think?

Perhaps it's the makings of an insanity plea for his defense. I highlighed one crazy ass thing he said in my piece on Republican retirements today in that Time interview, but DeLay said a slew of nutty things in there as well. Other highlights:

"The people that go to church understand that a country has to be based on some sort of religion and fear of God because they understand that."
...
TIME: You mentioned foster care and public speaking. What are some of the other projects that you imagine [doing]?
DeLay: Abortion on demand is still in this country, and I want to end abortion as we know it.
TIME: What would be the mechanism for doing that?
DeLay: I don't know. All I know is that's what my world view is.
...
TIME: Your smiling mug shot — what made you think of that and what do you think the consequence of that has been?
DeLay: Oh, I don't know. I said a little prayer. First of all, you only get one take. It's a very humiliating thing, to be booked. And I said a little prayer before I actually did the fingerprint thing, and the picture. And my prayer was basically: "Let people see Christ through me. And let me smile." Now, when they took the shot, from my side, I thought it was fakiest smile I'd ever given. But through the camera, it was glowing. I mean, it had the right impact. Poor old left couldn't use it at all. They had all kind of things planned, they'd spent a lot of money. It made me feel kind of good that all those plans went down the toilet.

Update: AHA! A just out article on how federal prosecutors are likely to swoop in on Tom DeLay confirms my thesis:

"Any rational person in his (DeLay's) position would be very concerned," said Kendall Coffey, a former federal prosecutor who's now a prominent defense lawyer in Miami.
Aha, I say, because DeLay isn't "concerned," he's been chuckling, laughing, smiling, and giggling all throughout his political burial service.

Digg!

Jan, I have a feeling that this site is not very receptive to opposing points of view but, to be fair, I'll give it a try. Regarding your take on Tom Delay's comments about Cynthia McKinney: As I understand the facts, Ms. McKinney ignored the guards request for her to stop, was not wearing the required ID, which seems to be required of all who wish to circumvent the security point, black, white, man, woman, whatever, and then, when stopped, punched the guard. Like any rational person, all of the people I know, be they black, white, liberal, conservative, whatever, feel that the congresswoman is behaving in an immature and irresponsable manner when she cries "racist" and ignores the facts of her own behavior. The same rules apply to everyone and anyone who did what she allegedly did would expect the same reaction from security. A reasonable and intellectually honest person would acknowledge that, realizing that: 1) there are around 600 people who qualify for that ID pass, 2) the congresswoman is not a famous face, 3) the congresswoman was NOT wearing her ID, nor did she identify herself, and 4) she had just changed her hair style. Surely we don't want the security at the Capital to just ignore a gate crasher. I don't know if Ms. McKinney is a racist or not but I suspect she is, and with a chip on her shoulder the size of Gilbrater. This is classic race baiting and it's blatently obvious. My question to you is, how can you intellectually defend your comment that this take is "crazy"?

But this is really getting absurd. Yes, there are persistent problems of race in this country. Yes, cops can be reactionary rednecks. Yes, DeLay is an idiot. Problem is, everyone is looking like idiots on this one. McKinney, the cops, DeLay (well, he always...). A daycare center would have resolved this in minutes.

In that spirit, some might enjoy (others may want to hit me with their cell phones):

McKinney Trial Moved to The Hague

EWM- (April 5, 2006) Succumbing to the reality that the U.S. legal system is not up to the task of handling the “trial of the century,” officials announced today that the cop-beating trial of Rep. Cynthia McKinney will be reclassified as a war crime and moved to The Hague.

McKinney is accused of striking a Capitol Hill police officer who accosted her for bypassing a security checkpoint in the Longworth House Office Building. McKinney, a black woman, says it was a case of “racial profiling.” The burley cop, who was not injured, says his “feelings were hurt.” A tourist who witnessed the incident says, “Christ on a cross, can these morons just get over it?”...

Consequences should be proportional

Tom DeLay money laundered, abused Homeland Security to arrest opposing politicians so he could ram through gerrymandering. And he will soon likely be accused of aiding and abetting the financial misdeeds of a international sex slave trader.

Cynthia McKinney, if she's guilty, which we don't know, simply took offense to a police officer's attitude and "hit" him.

Which one deserves to have a long sentence and which one deserves to pay a small fine, keep her seat & have her record expunged after no contest or probation?

What's fair here? The answer each person gives is a test of their intelligence.
