Britney: anti-choice poster child?

Posted by Laura Barcella at 6:00 AM on March 24, 2006.

A sculpture of singer Britney Spears giving birth on a bearskin run will be dedicated to the 'pro-life movement.' Sadly, I'm not joking.

So creepy, so disturbing, so outright odd, you just can't make this stuff up...

Beginning in April, a Brooklyn art gallery will display a life-size clay sculpture of pop songstress Britney Spears giving birth to her first child, son Sean Preston, on a bearskin rug. According to the press release from Send2Press.com:

"Natural aspects of Spears' pregnancy, like lactiferous breasts and protruding naval, compliment a posterior view that depicts widened hips for birthing and reveals the crowning of baby Sean's head."

Yup. It's a memorial of Britney Spears. Giving birth. On (huh?!) a bearskin rug. On her hands and knees. With a curiously slim, un-dimpled physique (she's supposed to be preggers -- did the artist not do any research? Did he not behold any photos of Spears when she was actually with child?)

What's going on here? Who in holy hell created this montrosity, and why?

The artist in question is a British bloke named Daniel Edwards. He helpfully explained his inspiration: "She was number one with Google last year, with good reason --- people are inspired by the beauty of a pregnant woman."

But the worst of this nightmare is yet to come. See, Edwards is working with the Capla Kesting Fine Art gallery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn to dedicate his sculpture to the anti-abortion movement. (The formal dedication ceremony will happen on April 7th, if you're itching to attend.)

Indeed; you read that correctly. This repellent work of "art" -- again, to reiterate, a creepily sexual sculpture of a young, cheesy pop star with her legs spread, back arched, pelvis thrust, butt in the air, and generally, you know, looking more prepared for a roll in the sack than the painful expulsion of a small human from her body -- is, in fact, called "Monument to Pro-Life: The Birth of Sean Preston."

"Britney provides inspiration for those struggling with the 'right choice,'" artist Edwards noted. (And apparently, the 'right choice' always means carrying a pregnancy to term, right Mr. Edwards?)

Lincoln Capla, the art gallery's co-director -- also male; also physically incapable of ever having to deal with an unwanted or unplanned pregnancy -- also weighed in:

"A superstar at Britney's young age having a child is rare in today's celebrity culture. This dedication honors Britney for the rarity of her choice and bravery of her decision.

Um, ok -- I must have missed the memo about why it's important to commend "superstars" who bravely decide to become young moms. Oh, I forgot -- these are anti-abortionists; there are no memos! There is no logic! But we should all kiss Britney's ass because she set the courageous example of being young, white, and rich enough to raise a child.

Whoop de doo. Give her a cookie, if you must -- but please don't use some nutty, obsessed artist's hypersexualized fantasy of celebrity childbirth as your twisted anti-choice propaganda. On second thought -- do that, if you really think it'll help your cause. I think it makes all of y'all anti-choicers look as crazy as the artist -- which, of course, you are.

Digg!

Pandagon thinks it's grotesque satire and I'm inclined to agree.

I really can't see the anti-choice crowd lining up behind this perv. Any comments from Mrs "I Wanna Be Your Slave" Federline on this?

On another note, looks like she was considered to replace Paula Abdul on American Idol.

ContraCostaTimes.com has this great little "reenactment" of the phone call she might have gotten:

Fox TV honcho: "Hey Britney, want to be a judge on 'American Idol?'"
Spears: "Sorry, I don't do crime shows."
Fox TV honcho: "No, no, no, the singing show."
Spears: "Oh, well, I'm kinda busy teaching my son to drive. How about my husband? He's looking for work. ... Hello? Hello?"

Satire? Weird?

If it's not, it's just another artist being impossibly weird. This is why every time I try to paint something my ideas are all hopelessly banal. I'm simply not weird enough. You HAVE to be weird to be an artist, and while many artists have tended to be liberal bohemians, some do hold more conservative viewpoints like anti-choice. You can't really complain about this and on the other hand, condemn the Right when they decry artists like Mapplethorpe or the cow-dung-virgin-Mary guy.

Just another example of how uninformed and just plain dopey a lot of pro-choicers are. Obviously this artist has no idea what the process of birth involves. If he did, he would know that there's absolutely no way a birth is going to happen with a woman in the position he's got the clay Brit! I agree with the author of the article, she looks more ready for a roll on the rug than birthing. It's not only stupid, it's really quite demeaning to the female gender.

You've been taken in by a couple of art pranksters. A little research would tell you that Dan Edwards has been called a "Shock Artist" by the New York Post, "prankish and frolicsome" by the NY Times. Subject-wise, his work includes The Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy Memorial in Indianapolis. But he is unafraid to take a poke at cultural icons, notably his Ted Williams death mask sculpture that was shown at another NY gallery.

Your post reveals you to be a bit of a reactionary. Because this artwork purports themes that clash with your worldview, you question the sculpture's validity as art, dub it a "montrosity," [sic] and worry that the artist did not create a sculpture that reflected the reality of Ms. Spears's pregnancy. That’s a pretty conservative way to look at art. Art doesn’t exist to compliment you. It shouldn’t fit neatly into your expectations.

If people to choose to express their personal views by means of art, great! That means they’re open to dialogue and conversation, and isn’t that we need more of? Your post lowers the bar well below art, below rational discussion, and puts the discussion at the level of Rush Limabugh-esque name-calling. The artist is “nutty.” The artist is “sick” the artist is “creepy.” The artist, and everybody like him, is “crazy.”

If I were a betting man, I’d guess that the artist’s point in this sculpture has nothing to do with the pro-choice/pro-life discussion and everything to do with the perception and judgment of pseudo-liberals. The press release is not meant to promote the work; it is itself part of the artwork, intended to provoke reactions like your blog post. Thus your reaction is also part of the artwork. A really good showing of the artist's work would be not only the sculpture, but framed reproductions of the condemning articles written about it. The fact that you were so emotionally affected by this artwork shows that it was successful. It is likely that the artist is not pro-life, but that he’s pro-self-expression. Perhaps he wanted to say that liberals could be as bad as conservatives when it came to reacting to opinions different than their own. If that's the case, it worked. You took the bait and revealed yourself to be a philistine in liberal clothing.

Art is not terrorism

Hi, folks-
I am the president of the newswire service which broke this story to the media, and just wanted to clarify that Send2Press(R), a unit of Neotrope(R) believes in pro-CHOICE. On the other hand we believe art should be allowed to exist and be viewed and discussed as expression of the artist's view on whatever topic that artist wishes to "birth." For those who appreciate alternative and modern art, like slices of cows hanging from sheets, or even more unusual works, the best art evokes controversy and, in my opinion, is most effective when it causes a "commotion" as this work has done. I don't believe the artist means to demean women as some might believe, and there is a sexual tone to the work which is both evocative yet proper for the context of the "celebrity" being (un)covered by the work. Im any event, if you'd like to hear my podcast interview with the artist, done last Fall, regarding his Ted Williams "Severed Head" piece, you can get a sense of his mindset by listening to him in his own words, at Send2Press.com/podcast/ and decide for yourself if he's a perv, a whacko, or just a true artist who is creating works that serve to make people go ... whoa (and I'm quoting Keanu Reaves, not the Fonz). Love it or hate it, you have to admire the work for what it does... get people talking. More than 100,000 unique visitors read the press release (!) on our site in the first couple of days, which has outstripped any of the whacky stories we do for our other clients like GoldenPalace and others. Thanks for listening.

The really nauseating character in this farce is the gallery curator. I'm on the fence about Daniel Edwards - one would think he's quietly rofl with the gallery's interpretation of it, judging by the work itself - if it weren't for some of his comments. Perhaps he's playing along to better enjoy the sensationalism and satire, as has been suggested.
If I hadn't read those comments in the press release, I'd say it's a pretty searing indictment of Spears' virgin-sexpot-spontaneous bride/divorcee-oops I did it again bride-righteous madonna hypocrisy. It's quite a nice blend of pop seductress and madonna in probably exactly the kind of pose she'd like to have choreographed for the birth - since the real thing can't have been as romanticized. But I pity Sean Preston for the years of therapy he's going to need to overcome it.

Brit as universal mother

Haven't y'all ever seen the movie "My Life As A Dog" where that sculptor tries to portray the universal mother holding her child? I'm really skeptical that anyone would sculpt Britney Spears on a bearskin rug with her baby's head "crowning" and seriously present it as a statement against abortion. Strike a tuning fork and let it vibrate against your elbow, cuz your funny bone needs to be recalibrated.

First off, Spears was number one in the search rankings at Google for a couple or few years before she got knocked up. The artist's statement is pure self-serving bullshit that I interpret as an effort to justify second rate artistic effort.

Second off, while I can see how the anti-abortion (not "pro-life") movement might want to exploit this, the reality is that Spears is a rich-bitch who can afford to be a baby factory and shove her brats off onto all the "best" (read: most expensive) daycare centers and private schools. That's hardly an option for a woman whose third pregnancy means she will have to quit her low paying job and live in destitution on welfare or abort so her first two children don't starve.

I reccomend you take two steps back and read your article and ask yourself if a conservative nutcase would use the same adjectives and tone to describe a pro-choice sculpture. The last time i heard the word "monstrosity" used to describe a work of art was while reading newspaper clippings on young counterculture poets here in Chile during our own military regime. Honestly i was quite shocked to see someone on alternet with this kind of attitude towards art.

well...I can see how this would quailfy as art. It is a beautiful rendition of a pregnant woman. I just dont see how it relates to being pro life. Or why they would want the sculpture in the first palce. Now if they were trying to convince young girls that being pregnant is sexy I would say go for it. Most of brittneys fan base is very young and when it comes to idols young girls will want to mimic everything. I just think that for the purpose it is trying to serve, which is to convince women and girls to keep their babies full term, it is a little too unrealistic. Like the author said shes wealthy enough to care for her child, some people on the other hand are not. Like the young girls who idolize her. being pro life and handing out condoms would probably be more effective in keeping girls from having to make the decision to abort or keep it. they could have babies when they are well ready.
