Over at PopPolitics, Jacyln has some words about the Oscars coming up on Sunday night... specifically, which ones will be allowed, and which ones won't, during the first-ever Oscar rap performance ("It's Hard Out There for a Pimp" from the film "Hustle & Flow"). Short story is that "bitches" will be allowed, while, as MSNBC so delicately puts it, the F-word and the N-word won't. Jacyln's reaction sums it up neatly:

So. To review. Saying "fuck," a word, however crude, for a very basic sex act that most adults enjoy, is totally offensive and can not only get you major league fined by the FCC but is waaaaaaaaaaaay too awful to even think about saying on the hallowed Academy stage. But calling a woman a bitch -- saying, to be conservative, that she is equivalent to a dog -- that's totally OK. And using that word in the context of this song about how hard it is for a pimp -- a man who sells women for a living -- in the soundtrack to a movie about said pimp and how great and misunderstood he is: also completely fine.

Got it.

Digg!

You all don't understand the street flavor inherent in the word bitch. As for the street flavor, it tastes like chicken, but since they're from a rough neighborhood, we let them get away with hating women. Bravo, Oscar, you gonadless freak. I think rap is to art what fart is to art: missing one letter.

Maybe the symbol of cinematic excellence in America needs a gender re-assignment this year in order to become more compassionate and discover how words like "bitch" offend, injure, and enculturate.

It astouds me that while the academy portrays itself as one of the most culturally sensitive in-crowds on the planet with praise for films like "Capote", "Brokeback Mountain' and 'TransAmerica", it still manages to completely miss the point where gender issues are concerned.

At least we still have "Le palme d'or"...

actually, no. the word 'bitches' was replaced by 'witches.' the original song does feature the word (which, i understand the feeling of anger about the word, which is certainly offensive in a certain context. but i also understand the fact that it has become, at least in some ways, gender neutral in its usage.), but it was changed. this, to me, was ridiculous. nevertheless, the point about the f-word being off-limits while a potentially more offensive word was allowed is well taken.
