Beware Hurricane Harriet

Posted by Rachel Neumann at 1:00 PM on October 4, 2005.

People don't like people who seem smarter than they are. With Harriet Miers, this won't be a problem.

No one ever said President Bush was smarter than Al Gore (well, except maybe for Harriet Meirs, who called Bush "the most brilliant man she'd ever met"), but a lot of people said they "liked" him better. All Bush had to do was speak in complete, unfumbled sentences and he seemed "presidential."

So can Harriet Meirs come across as worthy of the Supreme Court? Easily, I think. Will she be confirmed? I'm afraid so. She's no John Roberts, and certainly no Sandra Day O'Connor, but then, she doesn't have to be.

As John Dickerson puts it: The caricature of Miers that is emerging is so pathetic, her inadequacies so exaggerated, her inarticulateness so certain, that by the time she speaks in the committee room, she's almost certain to seem appealing.

Instead of continuing on about her lack of "judicial" experience, opponents should stick to the facts. Like Michael Brown, Harriet Meirs is a crony disaster appointment. Unfortunately for all of us, she's a disaster that would last a lifetime.

Digg!

Thanks for that link. I read it. It was enlightening. I am not sure where I stand on the issue except to say Miers is DEFINITELY conservative. I can do conservative, but is that really what I want? Really? Really? I do not think so. Is it possible to see anything else come up under Bush? I do not think so. To see any of us in there? I do not think so. I feel kind of hopeless about American politics right now.
On a side note, the evangelical thing is a touchy issue. All Christians are called to be evangelical by being Christian...But Right Wing Evangelicals evangelize their right wing politics...Ah baby and phone. More later.

We ain't seen nothing yet. Bushie still have a good two yrs. to go, so we have a real good chance of getting at least one more, maybe two die hard right wing conservers on the Court. Harriet makes enough to shift the balance on moderate changes in our system, but now Bushie can really put some right wing hard liners on the Court, at least one, and really shift the American system to the far right, and re-do hundreds of previous cases and laws..... Just wait!!!!!!!!!

If you were not a loyal friend and employee of President Bush, would you be sitting in front of this committee today?
For it's interesting that, out of all the potential female candidates, out of all the brilliant female legal minds in our country, out of all of the female judges with long judicial resumes, President Bush chose you.
(Bonus follow-ups) What makes you uniquely qualified in this context? What qualifications make you stand out from the rest of these distinguished candidates?

Another Question

Please compare your qualifications for this office with each of the CURRENT office-holders. How do you see yourself fitting in with the current team?

Of course we could get down to the really nasty questions:
What is the bill of rights?
How many amendments have been made to the Constitution?
Who gets to vote on Constitutional Amendments?
How many votes does it take?
Why does a case come before the Supreme Court?
These questions have been used on the citizenship test to become an American. And how can she decline to answer?

I still think she's Bush's idea of a real joke:
Vote FOR her and you get my totally unknown clone ruling over your life for the next 20 years.
Vote AGAINST her and I'll have to pick someone else from my list ... Owens? Brown? And you won't dare vote down a second candidate -- especially a lady AND a judge that YOU already confirmed this year!
Neener-neener-neener -- jokes on you! I WIN!

Folks: That's what we get when we let 52% of the (how many?) 49% of the voters of America RE-ELECT a born again drunk. We gotta do better!
