Republicans are having a hissy fit over a National Enquirer story that alleges Sarah Palin had an affair with her husband's business partner. The story, slated for September 15th publication, says that Todd Palin found out about the affair and ended his relationship with his business associate, Scott Alan Richter. At the Atlantic, blogger Andrew Sullivan also recently uncovered proof that Richter filed a motion to get his divorce papers sealed.

The McCain campaign is trying to kill the story, accusing "the media" of unfairly attacking Palin and threatening to sue the Enquirer if they go ahead with coverage of the alleged affair.

McCain adviser Steve Schmidt: "The efforts of the media and tabloids to destroy this fine and accomplished public servant are a disgrace. The American people will reject it."

Continued Schmidt:

Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin look forward to discussing the issues that Americans care about, fixing broken government, creating jobs, making our country energy independent and securing the peace for the next generation by bringing the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to a victorious end.
Hmmm. Remember when the Enquirer broke the story about the Edwards affair, and Republicans stood politely on the sidelines refusing to engage in baseless smears until it was absolutely clear the story was true? Recall how they respectfully backed off from attacks on Edwards and his family, fearing it would distract from the issues?

No? Me neither, because that's the opposite of what happened.

Here's Michelle Malkin's understated criticism of Edwards from August 8:

Well, the shoe has dropped. Does this mean he'll get to speak at the DNC now? The other big Democrat liar/cheater's already secured his spot, you know ... What a crapweasel ...
And what did they say about the Enquirer, that awful, salacious rag that traffics in baseless allegations, at the time? As Political Base points out, Jonah Goldberg from National Review argued this about the Enquirer back when they broke the Edwards story:
I]t's worth pointing out that while the Enquirer may or may not be scrupulous in its choice of stories -- that's in the eye of the beholder -- it is pretty scrupulous about its facts. They win lawsuits. They've broken a host of stories the MSM guys couldn't.
Anyway, Republican hypocrisy aside, this is why politicians (Dems and Republicans alike) shouldn't base their entire campaigns on the cuteness of their offspring or perfection of their marriage.

Digg!

Apparently she had an affair with her husband's business partner. It was hushed up, but these things never go away. I hope she did and maybe then she'll go away. ANNA

If you care whether Palin had an affair, please feel free to stop reading and go back to your favorite reality TV show. If you think it is significant that she is a hypocrite then please go back to reading USA Today.

If you care about the issues and why McCain is horrendous on the issues, then please go back to doing the real work of advancing the cause of progressivism in this country.

But, if this story has legs it would surely lead to her "withdrawal" from the Veep nomination.

Now THAT would surely be the final nail in the coffin of McCain's chances, he would have to, once again go over all the potential candidates that had already been rejected and choose once more.

On that, seeing Mike Huckabee swapping gags with Jon Stewart on "The Daily Show" recently I was once again impressed with his intelligence, poise and wit - for an admitted fundamentalist he is a stand up guy.

Since the repugs have catapaulted the National Enquirer into respectability do you think they will castigate the msm for ignoring this fine piece of investigative journalism? But since they seem to have overlooked Mcadulterer's own failures and even tried to use them as strengths, by his admission of failures in his personal life, I'm sure if they can't squash this story they will try to turn it around and once again attack the media as muck raking sexists who are trying to destroy the party of family values.

It just makes her seem more "real" to those that they are targeting to win over. It is best that we leave it alone and concentrate on the issues.

Nothing, he had already told her once! His anger is just the type of good old conservative Old Testament Republican that the Right Wingers want in the White House.

I hope Sarah has not blown it for him. Or something like that.

Clinton faced investigation/impeachment for dallying, but McCain's affairs and Palin's are not cause for concern? Palin's may ruin her candidacy, but McCain's don't?

McCain's campaign has said this election will not be about issues, but about the public's perception of the candidates.

Stand back, Rick Davis; you are about to get your wish.

To the men who saw her sexy before, she undoubtedly seems sexier now, and more attractive. Consider the popularity of ladies' men like Warren Harding and Bill Clinton among women voters. They won. Harding and Clinton were both elected, Clinton twice.

Same again. The vixen's out of the bag. Drooling basketcases all over the country will fantasize about Sarah's availability. When this story breaks, millions of troglodites will want to register to vote for the first time (some will have a little trouble with the paperwork, but nevermind that, they'll find ways.)

Unless of course it developes that the governor's 'powermower' is a black dude. Now that could get a little complicated.

Interesting opportunity for Sen. Obama's dance, but I expect he'll not take those steps.

Issues? Issues? Where are they now?

Very interesting if true. As the Repugs World Turns! Inquiring minds will now want to know, Whose Your Daddy? Visualizing the instant replay of Sarah Palin, the extreme Family Values Mommy Dearest sacrificing her Downs Syndrome Baby in front of the world for a little photo op, I hope the Enquirer gives us a timeline that can lead to speculation. Imagine a 44 year old woman having this little souvenier of love lost. Yes you're right, I can't wipe the smile off my face.
