Media Salivate Over Edwards' Affair; Shrug Shoulders Over McCain's Alleged Infidelity

I realize that everybody gets excited about sex scandals. It's human nature. But it's important to keep in mind that John Edwards didn't even come close to winning the nomination and this is just another sleazy tabloid story with absolutely no serious significance other than the sickening spectacle of the prurient slavering of the mainstream media now that they have finally found their hook: it's because he lied to the press about his sex life. How could he???

(Lying to the press about the anthrax killers and WMD in Iraq, well, not a problem.)

Let's assume that the rules now say that denying an affair to the press is a cardinal offense that merits endless bloviating about dishonesty from a bunch of hypocritical celebrities who protect their "sources" when they lie about torture and war. Fine. But this guy actually may very well be president and they took his word for it:

I'm very disappointed in the New York Times piece. It's not true. And I'll be glad to respond to any questions you might have.
QUESTION: Senator, did you ever have any meeting with any of your staffers in which they would have intervened to ask you not to see Vicki Iseman or to be concerned about appearances of being too close to a lobbyist?
MCCAIN: No.
QUESTION: No meeting ever occurred?
MCCAIN: No.
QUESTION: No staffer was ever concerned about a possible romantic relationship?
MCCAIN: If they were, they didn't communicate that to me.
QUESTION: Did you ever have such relationship?
MCCAIN: No.
QUESTION: Senator, can you describe your relationship with Vicki Iseman?
MCCAIN: Friends. Seen her on occasions, particularly at receptions and fund-raisers and appearances before the committee. I have many friends in Washington who represent various interests and those who don't, and I consider her a friend.
QUESTION: But do you feel like, in terms of your relationship with lobbyists in general, you were closer to her than with others?
MCCAIN: No, no.
I have many friends who represent various interests, ranging from the firemen to the police to senior citizens to various interests, particularly before my committee. And I had meetings with hundreds of them and various interests. And that was my job to do, to get their input.
And, obviously, people who represent interests are fine. That's their constitutional right. The question is is whether do they have access or unwarranted influence. And certainly, no one ever has in my conduct of my public life and the conduct of my legislative agenda.
QUESTION: Senator?
MCCAIN: Yes, sir?
QUESTION: Did John Weaver, who is one of your former top aides -- is quoted on the record saying that he had a conversation with her saying -- basically telling her to butt out.
Do you not know of that conversation? Do you know why John Weaver would go on the record describing such a conversation?
MCCAIN: I did not and I don't know anything about it.
Many people, especially in the press, jumped to defend McCain against the evil New York Times on that one and there has been no follow up. But considering how everyone is excusing the flogging of this Edwards story on the basis of the fact that he lied to the press, I'm not sure it's in the country's best interest not to ask McCain about this again and talk to the women herself. What if it comes out that it was true after he's president? Why surely the press will be as honor bound to obsess over it as they were about Clinton and now Edwards, right? It's not about the sex -- it's about the lying, remember? (They've been saying on a loop that John Edwards was a breath away from the presidency, after all and he got about four delegates.)

I personally don't care who any of these people are sleeping with (especially McCain). Marriage is a very complicated institution and I don't pass judgment on how others conduct theirs. I think this is all bullshit. But if the media has decided that even a failed politician who has no chance at the presidency can be subject to this kind of scrutiny, then they need to be a little bit more vigilant about pursuing someone who is the nominee of his party and has been very publicly linked to a specific woman by the paper of record, not the National Enquirer. If these are the rules, then this guy is a far more likely subject of scrutiny than Edwards.

I saw it on Elizabeth Edward's face and thought to myself something is really wrong. She hardly looked like herself at all. I thought maybe her cancer was worse but it wasn't that, it was this. DAMN IT!

The sex lives of consenting adults is none of our business, nor is it the business of a legitimate press whose editors and readers have a maturity level of 14 years or older. I'm not interested in John Edwards's or John McCain's sex life. But I agree, if it's the lying that's got the press so worked up, perhaps they could spend a little more time on the justification for the illegal war of aggression in Iraq, Scooter Libby and his pardon, and maybe even "Healthy Forests" and "Clear Skies"...

The rant wing hype machine is going into full swing about the "cover up" by the "liberal media."

The media is only as liberal as their corporate masters allow them to be. Hell, they probably knew about Edward's affair 2 years ago, and were just waiting for the right moment to make it public... like maybe at the Democratic convention when Edwards accepted the nomination?
Maybe Edwards learned they knew about it, and that's why he so mysteriously dropped out right before Super Tuesday.
At least he beat them to the punch by coming clean, and depriving them of any further residual damage. My thanks to the National Enquirer for forcing their hand.

How Could the Relationship Ever Have Become Public?
Posted by: artie on Aug 9, 2008 2:26 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
At first blush, I know that the question seems naive. After all, Edwards is a public figure, and he is clearly the target of voracious, media "interests." However, unless he was actually caught under the sheets with the woman, couldn't the two of them - and later family members - have kept the relationship confidential? Or did the stench of fame and fortune overwhelm someone's sense of values? At some time, some where, somebody prostituted herself or himself. Edward's "lie" is a denial uttered under emotional duress, almost coerced by the public. Which do you choose? Do you sacrifice partner/family trust, career, presidential or VP-presidential candidacy so that the truth can be "public-ized" of something that should have remained confidential in the first place? The puerile, American public, with their insatiable taste for the "pornographic," their unquenchable thirst for stories of human lives that are "victimized" by some other's prostituted sense of values, will damn him if he does and damn him if he doesn't! Hopefully, his family will not suffer any 'private' lasting damage.
In a society that has already prostituted itself to the core, only impeccable conduct can protect oneself and one's family (however, in such a society, how is such conduct rewarded?).
What does the public really want to know? Does Edwards have a big cock? Does he give good fellatio? Does she give good head? At least be as honest as you can be, America, when you enjoy ravishing the gutter!
...
My partially burnt flag now flies upside-down!

I wrote off Pretty Boy Edwards as a narcissistic empty suit after learning about his $400 haircut.

Unfit McCain is cut from the same egotistical cloth. A foul-mouthed womanizer with a Napoleon complex and room-temperature IQ, he cheated on his first wife after she had spent nearly every waking hour during the Vietnam War helping other POW wives to cope with their captured husbands' misfortune.

So how did Unfit McCain pay tribute to her patriotism? By sporting a hard-on in Hawaii and hosing Cindy while his real wife was at home, recovering from a near-fatal car accident.

A "man" like that should never EVER become America's commander-in-chief.

Who cares? Why are people so judgmental of marital fidelity, yet we have a president and vice president who commit horrendous crimes every day and no one says anything? This is a private matter, and whoever says we should judge politicians by their sexual behavior is a hypocrite and a moron.

America needs to know. Well, not really. But the media will tell you anyways. Here's a guy who had an affair two years ago and who has since admitted it to his wife and family. He is no longer running for president and is not even a name in the running for vice president. A lot of people can't even remember he ran this time. The Edwards story is living proof that we are poorly served by the fourth estate. As others have said, the president and vice president of the United States are probably guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors and should be impeached for the harm they have caused the republic. But by all means, let's spend time making a two year old affair with a former presidential candidate the "top" story.

Let me say at the start, I liked John Edwards.

I was swayed by his anti-corporation rhetoric and that as a lawyer he represented the little guy against these monolithic monsters.

But....He was running for President with a skeleton in his closet and regardless of how one might view marital infidelity, if he had won the nomination he very well could have lost the Presidency on this skeleton alone.

That is hubris on a grand scale and speaks loudly of his egocentricity out-weighing the good of the country and the Democratic Party.

And it is on these grounds that I condemn him.

It's only wrong when a Democrat does it.

Haven't you guys been paying attention? Our liberal media, when it can find the time between forcing women to have abortions and pushing the gay agenda are busily covering up the affairs of prominent Democrats.

That's why so few people even know about Bill Clinton's affairs and I'm sure nobody will even hear about this thing with John Edwards.

And our liberal media just won't shut up about John McCain's affair with a lobbyist and if I had a nickel for every prime-time news show investigating how Cindy McCain stole drugs from her non-profit organization....

It is a despicable habit of Americans to parade a public man's personal life before the cameras in order to drag him down to their level of sanctimony. In the late 90s it was Bill Clinton. Today it's John Edwards. Tomorrow it will be anyone in public life who can be exposed as a fallible human being. I admire the French people who are so far superior to Americans in that regard. I turn off such news reports. They're just too disgusting and depressing to watch.

When Filthy McNasty offered Cindy up to participate in the Sturgis Slut Showdown he was probably well aware of the subtle differences between this hullabaloo and a Miss. America pagent. But McNasty represents the Big House, like Chicken George in "ROOTS," so the MSM saw this as another chance to put a lil mo all american humor into the campaign. God forbid we put dignity, statesmanship, intelligence or a colored guy in the "People's" House on Pennsylvania Ave.
No sir, what our damn near down and out country needs is another overprivileged victim of arrested development as Commander of our military and embarrassing, terrorizing menace to the rest of the world as our President. So the MSM just know that it is their appointed duty to persuade Joe America to plunk down $60,000 for an old beat up White Yugo instead of a brand spankin new Black Lexus for the same $60,000.

Edwards did not become the nominee, so all of the what ifs and however dumb he was for running with this huge bag of bones in his closet are for naught. George Bush as prez encourages dummies, alright? It's genius that we disdain in today's USA.
Edwards is media meat 'cause he's a damn N****r LUVA!!! He dared identify with the field slaves. The wicked MFs, news editors, politicians, Christian preachers and all, who are so undone by revelation of this great sin don't give a damn about John Edward's family, especially Elizabeth, who seems to have acted like an adult human, you, me or the sexual proclivities of Larry Craig. All they care about is maintaining the reformed American Institute of Slavery. To the power elite and their minions heaven is all about Self, $$$$$$ and power. From that trinitarian diety they experience orgasim.

Cuba. What has Cuba to do with this? Don't ever mention Cuba, ya hear? Cuba is too poor, too dark and communist.

How'd ya like them images of The Bushes and their freakish, tortue loving, exploding firecrackers up the butt of frogs, waterboarding, human rights violating, war criminal, mentally retarded son, presiding at the opening of the world's second largest embassy over there in COMMUNIST RED CHINA. How many marriages have the Cheney/Bush regime fucked up? Let's talk about those marital affairs: the away from homes to engage in a state sponsored crime, the lonliness, the fear, the debts, the bankruptcies, the foreclosuers, the divorces, the deaths, the grief. Let'r air it and print it and talk it up every minute of every day as the greatest disgrace on the planet til it ceases and the criminal freaks responsible for it are brought to justice.

I ain't mad at John Edwards or the ghetto kids crying out for a muthafukin way out, and my friends, neither should any of us be. Come on Dems. Close ranks with the Edwards family like the republicans have done with their assorted adulturers, drunks, theives, pedophiles, punks, pimps, pushers, users, whores and haters.

Is my graphic description worse than what I describe?

But what I can't understand is how does this destroy Edward's leadership position in the party while Bill Clinton deserves a spot in the batting order for a big speech? Back in Jack Kennedy's days, the guy could whore around all he wanted to and the media wouldn't persecute him. However, be it Gary Hart in the 1980s, Clinton in the 1990s, or just about any Democrat today, the reason the rightwing media is cashing in on them is simple. Back in the 1960s, the Democrats were not as much of a sellout kissing up to the Wall$treet and social "conservative" wing of the GOP so their economic populism protected them from sex scandal attacks. However, ever since 1980 when the Democrats desperately moving to the right became obvious, the GOP and its rightwing media knew that they could count on the party to sell itself out and without the genuine populism protection, the Democrats were left vulnerable to "morality" attacks. The only way the Democrats will be less vulnerable is to stop kissing up to rightwing economic, social/religious, and militaristic interests and not be afraid to be their own progressive and liberal selves.

Had Edwards voted against the China "Free" trade scam and giving Bush a "free" pass to invaade Iraq as examples, the media would have spent more resources trying to attack Edwards for being a bit more populist rather than the sex scandal. PANDERING TO THE "RIGHT" HAS NEVER WORKED, NEVER DOES WORK, AND NEVER WILL WORK !

Lies and hypocrisy
Posted by: CJC on Aug 9, 2008 11:48 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The important lies abroad in the land are those of the Bush administration. No doubt about that at all.

Bushies are hypocritical too - they pretend it's about "making us safer" when it's about ripping us off, making the world safe for Halliburton etc, and trashing the Constitution because "It's just a piece of paper" that's getting in their way.

However, let's not be naive about how Edwards' confession puts the Dems in an awkward position. (The Europeans must be laughing at our Puritan selves again.) Given that the Republicans tried to destroy Bill Clinton with the Monica Lewinsky tale (all that nonsense about a blow job!) they'll try to use Edwards against Obama.

So the McCain marital story is absolutely politically relevant. Does a "war hero" get a pass on treating his first wife like trash and securing the rich Cindy before he got divorced?
Again, it's about lying and hypocrisy, not about tolerance for human fraility.

The Dems shouldn't be polite. The Republicans aren't.

McCain's #1 squeeze, Carol Shepp, was a swimwear model. She got in an auto accident and then I guess she wasn't so pretty -- she was four inches shorter.

In the divorce proceedings she got alimony. Then she immediately got a Republican job for life. She's been bouncing between the Reagan administrating and elsewhere. She couldn't possibly say that McCain was a no good rotten because of her lifelong Republican meal ticket. That's the deal.

John McCain could have been heiress Cindy McCain's father. He married her just before her 26th birthday, and he was almost 44. If you're going grey/bald and you're going to switch over to a trophy wife, get a rich young blonde one.

could this be an attempt at making sure Edwards doesn't run in 2012 or for anything again??? make him out to be a sleazebag now and no problems later... guess he was probably close to the truth or the powers that be wouldn't be making as big a stink as they are right now to discredit him and shut his mouth...

whatever went on between another woman, Elizabeth and the Edward's marriage is their business... there are little kids involved here and that's just nasty with the msm trying everything they can to get a 'good story'!!!

ps... has anyone ever noticed that Cindy mccain always looks pole axed on some kind of tranquilizers, a frozen grin without any human reaction behind her eyes and needs a hand to keep her balance??? is she being chemically gagged or what...

Fibbing--the difference between Republicans and Democrats

Damn those Democrats. President Bush may have fibbed to get us into a war that killed hundreds of thousands (mostly Iraqis), but John Edwards cheated on his wife. Which is worse? I’m thinking the latter. The president’s lie has kept al Qaeda from delivering terrorism on American soil. Edwards’ deception has made us a less-decent nation. The president’s trickery was constructed to keep us safe, a truly unselfish act; Edwards’ obfuscation was pure selfishness and obviously exposed this nation to danger.

Thank goodness the press is all over this indiscretion. The buildup to the war, of course, was really none of our business; we need to leave such things to the experts. On the other hand, this Edwards’ affair is all of our business. We live for this kind of salacious material. And I think Edwards’ recklessness says something about Barack Obama’s obvious lack of integrity, as well. I mean besides his suspicious name. Then again, I don’t think he has the guts to cheat on his wife. Not with that gun she straps over her shoulder. (I, too, saw that photo in the National Geographic. Nothing gets past me.)

The Media are the last to be tsk-tsking about this after all they are the biggest whores in the Washington beltway.

They only "service" their corporate masters and John McBush is just one of the guys - racist - sexist and a adulterous fraud preaching family values when its all about money.

Remember him? Remember the truly important story about how the White House, abetted by the CIA, concocted the "evidence" that "justified" the invasion of Iraq? The Edwards' infidelity story has knocked the really important evidence of the impeachable fraud committed by the Bush administration out of the news. That is the real pity of this salacious coverage. It's appalling.

The following text is from an article published on June 23, 2008, by the Seattle Times, titled, "McCain beer/ties might brew conflicts."

Hensley, one of the nation's major beer wholesalers, has brought the family of Cindy McCain wealth, prestige and influence in Phoenix, but it could create conflicts for her husband, Sen. John McCain, if he is elected president.

Hensley, founded by Cindy McCain's late father, holds federal and state licenses to distribute beer and lobbies regulatory agencies on alcohol issues that involve health and safety.

It has opposed groups such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) in fighting proposed federal rules that would require alcohol-content information on every package of beer, wine and liquor.

Its executives, including McCain's son Andrew, have written at least 10 letters to the U.S. Treasury Department, contributed tens of thousands of dollars to a beer-industry political-action panel and hold a seat on the board of the powerful National Beer Wholesalers Association.

The company also has run afoul of health-advocacy groups that have tried to rein in appeals to young drinkers. Hensley, for example, distributes caffeinated alcohol drinks [nicknamed "Alcopops"] that public-health groups say put young and underage consumers at risk by disguising the effects of intoxication.

The involvement of his wife and children in federal regulatory issues could create a conflict of interest for a future McCain administration, according to advocacy groups and political analysts.

For years, McCain has recused himself on alcohol issues in the Senate. As a president, however, he would face far more difficulty distancing himself from such a broad issue.

Cindy McCain is chairwoman of Hensley and controls about 68 percent of the privately held company stock with her children and the senator's son from his first marriage, according to records at the Arizona Department of Liquor Licenses and Control. Cindy and John McCain keep their finances separate, and he has no interest or role in Hensley.

in high school?
When I find Washington Journal on C-Span dedicating time to this 'story', I'm ready to hurl!
A couple of unmarried, real, reporters in Iraq have a fling; covered everywhere! Yawn!
We have learned, many times by our own efforts, that this cur president and Grendel Cheney have: Lied us into an illegal invasion and occupation of an innocent and unarmed country; two, actually. Every dept. has been filled with cronies; causing unjustified suffering and even death to countless people. Torture is policy; we are spied upon with out legal justification since before 9/11/01! The list is endless; and much more than we are aware of now.
Where were these intrepid journalists!?
They were spouting the Rapepublican line; seasoned Dems. rolled over. So, the media, the press, the only Constitutionally protected industry failed 'we the people' and themselves; the shame of this era will follow us 'til the end of human existence or as long as I live, whichever comes first.
Come on sheeple; we are in real trouble. The depths of the corruption throughout our society will take at least a generation to repair, if then; not to mention our shattered reputation abroad. The personal woes of one family, even a high profile one, means nothing in the grand scheme of things; and, is really none of our business!

Trashing Cindy is out of the question. And that protects John Boy and his seedy past. There's alot that the media is overlooking, they same way they blew off Bush's past. Even the Enquirer has to leave some people alone. Anyone worth $600 million dollars can tell people where to go and what to do. Nobody will mess with her. ANNA

The corporate media is NOT in the News business. There is no ad revenue in the News! Sex, crime, celebrities, disasters: floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, wild fires. That's where the ad money is!

Unlike, John McCain, John Edwards, is incredibly good looking. Have you noticed that when the female reporters report on this story they have a smile on thier lips and a twinkle in their eyes? (To be fair, so do some of the men reporters)
I think people hate John Edwards more for
for his good looks than his infidelity.
