The PTC Thinks TV Will Turn Your Kids Into Sex Freaks

Bad news for all those parents out there who were kinda counting on TV to raise their kids for them: Parents Television Council -- the conservative watchdog group most notable for inundating the FCC with complaints about curse words and boobs -- has just released a study that finds prime-time television "actively" denigrates marriage while glorifying sex outside of it. Even worse, according to the report, is the television depiction of "outre sexual expression" such as " ... masturbation, pornography, sex toys, and kinky and fetishistic behaviors."

The snappily titled "Happily Never After: How Hollywood Favors Adultery and Promiscuity Over Marital Intimacy on Prime Time Broadcast Television" contains such alarming news as:

  • Across the broadcast networks, references to adultery outnumbered references to marital sex 2:1.

  • Although the networks shied away from talking about sex in the context of marriage, they did not shy away from discussions of masturbation, oral sex, anal sex, manual stimulation, sex toys, bondage or kinky or fetishistic sex -- there were 74 such references during the study period.

  • Visual references to voyeurism (a third party present, watching or taping while sex takes place), transvestites/transexuals, threesomes, kinky sex, bondage and sadomasochism, and prostitution outnumbered visual reference to sex in marriage by a ratio of 2:7:1.

Based on these and similar findings the report concludes that today's prime time television:
... seems to be actively seeking to undermine marriage by painting it in a negative light ... sex in the context of marriage is either non-existent on prime-time television, or is depicted as burdensome rather than as an expression of love and commitment. By contrast, extra-marital or adulterous sexual relationships are depicted with greater frequency and overwhelmingly, as a positive experience.
Furthermore:
Behaviors that were once seen as fringe, immoral or socially destructive have been given the imprimatuer of acceptability by the television industry -- and children are absorbing those messages and judging from a recent survey, imitating that behavior.

The most obvious problem with the report derives from the main problem with the PTC. The organization advocates for a narrow and outdated morality; then it has its members send 5 trillion letters to the FCC so that everyone has to suffer. But what's particularly galling about "Happily Never After" is that the alarmist arguments in the report do not even match the research. Certainly, a parent whose values align with those of the PTC would find information about marriage and sex on TV valuable. But even if I were particularly concerned about the denigration of marriage in our media, the report would tell me very little about how sexuality and marriage are actually treated by Hollywood.

The PTC used the following methodology to determine that TV undermines marriage and pushes promiscuity and other 'immoral' behavior:

PTC analysts examined all scripted prime-time entertainment programs on all the major broadcast television networks ... Analysts tracked and categorized each sexual element within a scene. Categories of sexual content tracked by PTC analysts included verbal references to marital sex, incest, pedophilia, bestiality, necrophilia, partner-swapping, prostitution, threesomes, sex with transverstites/transexuals, masturbation, oral sex ... Visual sexual elements noted by analysts included depictions of marital or non-marital sex, adultery, visual innuendo, oral sex, teen sex ... And sexual touching (i.e. of breasts or genitals.)
So basically the preacher from Footloose and Maude Flanders sat in a room and sniffed piously and periodically proclaimed "Why, I never!" and wiped their steamed-up eye-glasses while counting 'references' and 'depictions' of sex on TV. They then categorized them into positive or negative, marital or non-marital, normal or "outre". While this type of quantitative research apparently yields some alarming data, it tells us very little about how actual viewers experience television and absorb its messages.

As even most of those endangered kids cited by the study are probably smart enough to figure out, television is a narrative, visual, and auditory medium, and the "messages" it communicates cannot be condensed into numerical data. A reference to prostitution does not automatically transmit the message that people should have sex with prostitutes. Depictions of adultery do not necessarily tell viewers that it's admirable to step out on a spouse. Since most people, especially most children, are not PTC analysts, they experience these references and depictions in the context of entire episodes. The meaning they derive is undoubtedly also influenced by tone, acting style and other visual and audio cues.

Not only does the PTC wildly over-interpret basically meaningless data, they also base their findings on scenes taken entirely out of context. Here's the report's summary of an episode segment of 30 Rock, which is cited as an example of sex between an adult and child:
Describing a new TV show, Jack says "MILF Island': 25 super hot moms, 50 8th grade boys -- no rules"
Not only is this obviously a parodic scene, but it's one that actually pokes fun at our trashy, over-sexualized media.

Here's an example from the study of the glorification of non-marital sex (from Bionic Woman):
Jamie gets drunk. She tells the bartender that there is no such thing as "Mr. Right." She says that from now on it's Mr. Right Now." Just then an attractive man walks up to the bar. Moments later Jamie and the man are shown kissing passionately in the bathroom. It is suggested that she is about to have sex with him.
Now, I actually watched this particular crappy episode. Jamie does indeed drag a stranger into a bar bathroom. But they don't have sex because the guy is weirded out when she accidentally breaks his rib. Then, the head of the sinister secret organization responsible for Jamie's bionic status sweeps in, eyebrow raised: "Who's this?" He asks. Humor for us and embarrassment for her ensues when she can't remember his name. Sinister man then judgmentally asks, "Is this is what you call getting on with your life?" Rather than promote non-marital, promiscuous sex, this scene -- when not taken out of context -- sends the message that it's wrong.

The sexual politics of television are in fact quite conservative (prime-time TV is geared towards the broadest possible audience and the networks are wary of offending sponsors); as Diane Shipley points out in the Guardian, the primary message television shows communicate about sex isn't that more people should be having it outside of marriage, but rather that if you're a girl who has sex you'll be ostracized, get pregnant or die.

There's certainly a need for watchdog groups that raise awareness about the pernicious messages about sexuality in most mainstream media (see sentence above). It's unfortunate that the most powerful organization in this capacity is one that uses b.s. research to push a regressive agenda.

Digg!

There are a lot of good reason to
get rid of the TV (or at least put a block on it).

TV encourages materialism

TV encourages obesity

TV encourages poor grades

TV encourages isolation

Of course kids (like adults) will always want
to escape into fantasy, luckily we have books.
Comic books to serious novels, books all stimulate the mind and teach literacy.

TV vs Reading

This is just silliness. I agree with the other posts already here: Try parenting your kids by actually interacting with them, for pete's sake.

While TV definitely suggests things like sex and materialism, and it also makes your brain lazy, we've known this since I was a kid. Maybe the quality of programming has dropped since the A-team and Magnum PI (LOL), but it's always been vastly inferior to reading, playing a musical instrument, or exercising for a teen's physical and mental well being.

Indeed, this is nothing new. Kill your television.

No one of this holy parents noticed the violence? "Criminal Minds," "24" etc? I guess they think torture scenes (especially with women as victims) will make their kids good, patriotic, law-abiding citizens.

I believe that every remote now has an off button. On mine it is RED. Perhaps those frantic people could make use of the red off button and sit down with their children and read to them, play board games, perhaps have a family sing along, or go for a walk. What is wrong with them? Do they not realize that they are responsible for the upbringing of their own children? Act like Parents for gosh sake.

so, i just started watchin' the 'ol idiot box regularly after 18 years of not watchin' it regularly (and mostly not at all). and i don't have cable - just the 4 networks.

most of the sex references are either between married couples or are about sex crimes where the offender ends up dead or locked up.

the violence - particularly violence against womyn, is over the top.

if i got my views of the world from the tv i would never go outside. The world of tv is violent to the extreme. serial killers are behind every door, cops that kick the shit out of suspects are heroes, womyn are almost always victims ('cept the ones that are funny or are kicking the shit out of suspects or are computer geeks) and insults are ways to express affection.

its fuckin' twisted and surreal.

i hope i can take the electronic needle out of my brain soon.

Television really is garbage, though

It's kind of hard to deny that fact.

As for television raising American children, there are tens of millions of us that really were raised by our TV. It's only getting worse as time goes on.

All you yuppies on Alternet should be able to relate. If you wake up at 5 am, stick some food in your kids before dropping them off at day care and then don't see them again until you get home at 6 pm from your hour plus commute, do you really think you're raising your kids?

Spending a couple of hours a day with your children does not constitute raising them. That is why it is absolutely critical to gain control of a nation's schools (compulsory education) and media. If you control those two elements then you can brainwash/mold the next generation into whatever you wish it to be.

TV and the public schools raise your children, you just feed and cloth them. Perhaps you should look into the people that own and control both the media and the schools?

Nah, American Idol is on, gotta run.

in all their petty ramblings, the PTC never once mentioned Gay, Lesbian, or Bisexual references to sex. However they do show their ignorance by including references to Transvestites/Transexuals.

I guess they really do not understand what the T stands for in GLBT. But then again they also did a very good job of pointing out most heterosexual deviances very well.

The PTC must be a pro-GLB(T) organisation! Ah the ANTI-HAGEE.

Good piece, Tana! It is amazing how these conservatives set the agenda and the terms of discussion around depictions of sex. To some degree, this is a failure of liberals to defend freedom of expression and to establish a culture of artistic freedom in a secular society. The Democrats surrender to the right when they adopt their language of religiosity and "morality."

is capable of being programmed to avoid mature themed programs. tv shows have ratings that indicate for what age level they are appropriate. you can get a v-chip if you don't have cable or its equivalent to block any show/channel you don't want your kids to watch. police your own house; stay out of mine. (p.s. if you want your kids to actually have any sort of sex education that's worth a crap, there are worse places than tv to get it)

The PTC might want to check out CBS's "Swingtown," which regularly depicts--among other things--married heterosexuals having sex with their own spouses, as well as discussing the seriousness of their commitment to their marriages.

The weirdest thing to me is the focus on sex and nudity. I do agree that the TYPE of sexuality constantly shown by pop-culture is unhealthy (hook up sex, not commitment sex)... but really is THAT the biggest problem with our culture? Promiscuity? I'd say that our relationship towards violence is much more pathological than our (completely unhealthy) relationship towards sex.

And the relationship towards "naughty words" is even less important. It's the false morality of the culture warriors. They think that as long as they are angrily offended by SOMETHING, they must be moral leaders.

It's only advertising folks, and most of that is lies. If parents aren't teaching their young kids about the merchandising hucksters now, they are really going to be in trouble before they reach their teens.

Guess who gains the most from commercial TV?

That's right! It's the Family Values Freaks!

The Man of the House provided the sole source of financial support, while the Immaculate Wifey paraded about the house in a designer dress awaiting the arrival of the Man. They slept in separate beds, and most likely used magic to procreate. Nowadays the same fools from the land with more "adult" bookstores and movie houses than churches want to return us to the golden days of the 1950s. It's a fact that most TV is worthless, but there's GOOD TV as well. Mt three kids learned to read watching Sesame Street and the Electric Company, for instance, and there's the History Channel, the Discovery Channel, the Science Channel, and the National Geographic Channel, to name a few. I wouldn't be surprised if the jesus freaks wanted to eliminate them as well.

It's only the mindless and unthinking watching TV so if the conservatives can make the content even more boring than it is, more power to them. Then every channel can have wall-to-wall advertising and there will be no reason for anyone who actually reads to watch.

If you take a look at the PTC’s home page, you’ll find a whopping five words devoted to violence. Apparently, the sight of Janet Jackson’s nipple (a now 4-year-old story) is one of the greatest threats to America’s youth today. And how can we possibly disagree? I mean, kids may actually get the idea that adult women have (gasp!) breasts!

... but in too many households parents are working too many jobs (On average 2-3 and you can thank the bad economic policies actually originating in the Reagan Administration for putting many families in such situations) and have no time to sit down with their kids to play with them in order to keep them away from it (They also do not have the time to sit down and read books to/with them, which does not encourage them to read on their own). Also, in weather-beaten parts of the country like here in the midwest, TV is a necessity because we need to heed the weather warnings and thanks to corporate-owner giants like Clear Channel, forget your local radio giving them out to you. Sut Jhally recommends that we advocate in taking our culture back by becoming active in demanding quality, thought-provoking, commercial-free programming instead of the materialistic advertising-driven, exploitative dreck that is driving us away from it. One of the most valuable lessons we can teach our children is that if you want it, you need to activate in demanding what is good for them with no compromises or apologies.

And where I see it is right here on alternet.

How many articles have we seen complaining about there being not enough female heroes, or lead characters on TV?

How many articles have we seen complaining about how women are portrayed on TV?

How many articles have we seen complaining that women on TV are creating an unnatainable standard of beauty?

How many articles have we seen complaining about the violence on TV?

All of the above, suggests that images on TV can be harmful to impressionables watching it.

And yet THIS article is claimint TV is innocuous?
