"Unsexiest" Woman Holds Mirror Up to Maxim's Judges

Sarah Jessica Parker challenges Maxim magazine's offensive ranking of her as the "Unsexiest" Woman Alive.

"Am I really the unsexiest woman in the world?"

That's the rhetorical question actress Sarah Jessica Parker posed to Grazia (which actually bills itself as Britain's "first glossy magazine"). She was responding to the title of "Unsexiest Woman Alive" bestowed upon her by a poll of the readers of another magazine, Maxim.

In questioning their choice, Ms. Parker fails to notice that she's acquiescing to the notion that there really is an unsexiest woman in the world. But she deserves credit for bravely admitting that it caused her significant pain, enhanced, in turn, by her husband's anger.

"Do I fit some ideals and standards of some men writing in a men's magazine?" she asked. "Maybe not." (Plaudits also for taking the trouble to Q & A herself, thus lightening the interviewer's work load.)

Again, Ms. Parker is on the right track, but only halfway there. She herself illustrated the point in the 1991 film "LA Story." Playing SanDeE*, a dizzy, flirtatious young woman, she beguiles the middle-aged Steve Martin. (And, in the process, makes it impossible for girls to ever unselfconsciously twirl again.)

By parodying it in its most juvenile and blatant form to a T, Ms. Parker draped herself with the mantle of sexiness and the rest was history. It's indicative of her intelligence that her career was built on irony.

Maxim's readers likely weren't singling her out for a lack of sexiness, which no red-blooded man can dispute at this point. Arguably, it's her long face to which they object.

In fact, Ms. Parker is the latest in a long line of formidable women stretching from Cleopatra to Bette Davis to Madonna. Though lacking the symmetry of a classic beauty, they bent men -- and the world -- to their whims, whether by disposition, determination, or talent.

The case can be made that Maxim's readers object to having a sex symbol chosen for them on the basis of her success in a "women's" TV series. Also, there's no disputing that La Parker is ubiquitous -- besides TV, from billboards to magazine ads to commercials -- not to mention, much the richer for it.

But, as is too often the case with a poll, it reveals more about the voters than the subject. First, Maxim readers seem oblivious to the extent to which their tastes in women have been shaped by today's surgically enhanced models and actresses. Talk about an image being forced down their throats.

Second, conferring a title as vicious as unsexiest woman alive on anyone reflects a poverty of spirit that, in itself, cancels out a Maxim reader's qualifications to choose the winner of any poll.

Except maybe for which male mixed-martial-art star they'd most like to be in the ring with alone and naked.

And, obviously, they don't possess a shred of common decency.

Well said.

No real man would ever refer to a woman as "unsexiest", which brings vile and mean spiritedness to new lows.

They aren't "men", they don't even qualify as boys.

What people need to understand about why men despise SJP so much is that Sex and the City has been shoved down peoples' throats as a cultural phenomenon, and purports to "Say Something" about female empowerment. But the show may as well be called Bling Bling for White Women - the only middle-class guy the 4 harpies on it will lower themselves to stick with is the bartender and even then only after he "improves himself" and opens his OWN bar. No self-respecting man would want to stay with any of these neurotic gold-diggers. I remember suffering through one episode with a then-girlfriend where SJP was describing how she was sizing up a potential suitor (lawyer or something) as being "good on paper" and now wanting to see if there could be anything between them. It's just 30 minutes of hypocrisy since the show purports that the 4 main characters are just looking for true love. To those who say SJP just acts, she also had a big hand in producing the show. And soon humanity will be inflicted with a godforsaken movie featuring these 4 harpies. Any show that reversed the roles men and women have on Sex and the City would be pilloried, quite rightly, by females.

Now, I think Maxim is stupid, juvenile and I don't read it. But the editors didn't make the list themselves, they polled and compiled the results. I think it reflects male disgust with SJP's show and the notion that men are attracted to the sort of women who will have sex with dozens and dozens of people without caring if there is any real emotion or connection involved. Personally, nothing turns me off more so I think SJP is a perfect #1 for this list for her godawful show that's rerun everywhere.

her career was built on irony?

No, incorrect, her career was built in HOLLYWOODLAND. There is no irony in Hollywoodland.

And there's no difference between the low-brow trash of Maxim compared to the bourgeois penny-awful that is Sex in the City.

This article is just another little "what the fuck?!?" Americans have when they realize their entire media culture is utter shit or out and out pro-war propaganda.

Ever watched "SWINGING"? ...the "Dumb Lads' Mag Publishers" sketch?

does anybody watch that show in the US?
Swinging is an HILARIOUS UK Channel Five comedy show that revolves around social relationships & sexuality.

Characters include:
'Carla The Fussy Lay', 'Snobby Doggers', 'Prisoners Of Love', 'Miss Beasley Likes Her Students', Irish Catholic Sex Therapist, The Camp Fiancée, Tom's Parents, 'The Horse Whisperer', 'Nostalgic Guy' & 'Wrong Boyfriend'.

Oddly enough, one sketch is APPLICABLE to this issue ...has a recurring sketch of 'testosterone high, ethics impaired' Lads' Mag publishers.

To wit, I'm recalling the episode when the intelligent writer was desperately trying to convince the Mag Ownership that you can't promotionally RAFFLE OFF AN ASIAN SLAVE GIRL in a Mens' Mag...

...'nuff said, I think.

I don't care what Maxim or any other magazine says went it comes to RATING women.
I don't know what it is about Sara Jessica Parker ; sure, she pretty, but there's something else that i have never been able to put my finger on. She has always made me hot! I have asked myself for years that very question, and can only say that's just the ways she affects me. I was envious of Mattew Broedick when he somehow got her to marry him. Still am. Oh,by the way i have never admitted this to anyone and would have kept it to my myself if Maxim had not come up with this asinine notion that Sara not only is not sexy ,but that every other woman is sexier than her!? She must have pissed somebody over there off really bad, to make them pretend that she's not hot. Matt( that lucy dog) and me and millions of other men (and i imagine more than a few women) know that's not true.
See you in my dreams, Sara!

self worth ought to be affected by my opinion of her, but I think she's drop dead sexy, talented as hell and Matt's a lucky guy. Those idiot's wouldn't know a good woman if she wrote them a dissertation and diagnosed their erectile dysfunction. Pardon my french but for all other men I would like to apologize for the assholes at Maxim. Save Ferris.

First of all, the title should be "unsexiest celebrity" not "woman". I mean, c'mon. Part of a celebrity's job is to be sexy. SJP's show has "Sex" in the title. While sexiness should be much lower on the list of qualities to be famous (acting, intelligence and charity coming in higher), let's not forget the vain realities the glossy mags perpetuate. Wrong? Yes. Should we take them seriously? No.

Secondly, any "sexiest" or "unsexiest" contest is bound to be BS. How could anybody possible know how sexy somebody is without knowing them?

Thirdly, Maxim Magazine is like having a bumper sticker on your car that says, "shallow, vain, follower; Unfit for dating."

All these contest are stupid and designed to elevate one group of women above all others. As a woman of color, I think this conversation, and the fact that someone thought it worthy of debate proof of the fragile White psyche. When would we ever be discussing all the beautiful women of color who never make the sexist or most beautiful list?

Hmm...Maxim v. Parker...

I used to deliver mail on a navy ship. Maxim is--as best as I can tell--as near to softcore as you can get, without having "PlyBoy" showing up on your credit slip at home.

Parker did...what? Some skits with a couple more actresses on the Human Body Odor channel, with "Sex" in the title, because it sells? The same channel that brought us us la'italiana gangsta rapture, and "jailhouse rock" drama edition, for the low-low price of ~$100/month?

Moral of the story: if you're going to base your career on sex, prepare to be critiqued on that basis by idiots who have a high enough credit limit to afford premium cable and skin-mag subscriptions, right up until the foreclosure notices start piling up*.

Imho, Parker and Maxim's audience fit hand-in-glove, if you shove hard enough.

*P.S. Good luck to the industries who are dependent on "credit-rich" idiots if the government doesn't decide to steal tax money from sensible people to bail people and industries out of their collective stupidity.
