Sex Workers Are Indeed Exploited -- by the Mainstream Media

Posted by Audacia Ray, Waking Vixen at 1:07 PM on March 13, 2008.

Sex workers are being abused and manhandled by a media that has no interest in our well being, only in the details of how we got to be so bad.
original
"Kristen" or Ashley Alexandra Dupre, the 22 year old woman who Spitzer is supposed to have paid thousands of dollars to sleep with.

A sampling from my inbox and phone queries today:

From Fox News:

"I am trying to find someone to explain how credit card payments work with escort services. Specifically, how do you make sure the name of the escort service does not show up on a credit card bill. If anyone can explain that I would be very grateful."

"Good Morning America is looking for anyone who has ever worked in high-end prostitution as a madam or sex worker for their coverage of the Gov. Spitzer scandal. Their preference is def someone along the lines of Heidi Fleiss (have interviewed tons of times and don't want to call on again)."

From an Italian news channel:

"I need a prostitute to describe what it is like to meet with men, how she selects them, what they do in the meeting."

And this:

"We need someone familiar with the political, social, legal and economic issues that affect sex workers to comment on this story. Someone who advocates for sex workers is preferred."

Oh wait, I made that last one up. Because it doesn't exist.

The closest I got to that was the conversation on The Brian Lehrer Show this morning. This one was actually really good, and despite the mention that I'm a former sex worker, there was no harassment of the "what kind of sex worker were you?" variety.

We exist. In growing numbers, there are sex workers and allies of sex workers who have a critical and political take on how our bodies and our labor are legislated. Not to mention, we are well aware of and constantly struggling with the ways our stories and our work are grossly exploited by the mainstream media in an attempt to get a juicy story. You want to talk about exploitation of women, media? Look at your own goddamn questions, the exposure you ask us to engage in, the personal questions you want us to answer. Look at the sexy container you put us in, all sultry bad girl secret story, no room for brains with the boobs. We don't want to tell you our naughty secrets. What's in it for us? You won't give us the space and air time to talk about issues that matter to us, we won't give you the dirt.

Sex workers aren't represented in the media because the media does not create space for us to talk intelligently about the issues that face us. Like I said in my post last night, we are being cast into roles, roles that are nearly impossible to break. We're afraid of being abused and manhandled by a media that has no interest in our well being, only in our cunts and the details of how we got to be so bad.

Mainstream media, if you're so concerned about the exploitation of sex workers -- stop perpetuating the exploitation with your own tools.

This morning a woman was discussing the legal issues and her contempt for this woman was really pronounced.

I find it interesting she was so judgmental and negative while her male co-host Bill Hemmer was sensitive to the girl, she had misfortunes in life that had led her to this low place of infamy.

They then diverged into a strange conversation about swapping sex for interviews on TV that we hope was all joking, but looked a little too much like the true confessions were coming out. Yikes! I hope that is not their business practice.

How strange this whole media frenzy is. Apparently no one thought to open the yellow pages of the Manhattan phone book and look under, lemme see now, oh yeah, "Escort Services". Or how about any number of out in the open escort websites that not only list the escorts in your city but also client reviews, likes and dislikes and rates. All right there - no big deal - google your heart away.

Escorts happen to be people. Really? Some work for an agency, some are independent, the vast majority are well over 18, adults and sane. This isn't some dark and sinister reality - it's pretty much out there and always has been.

And here's the kicker - a whole lot of male journalists who would otherwise deny it have actually engaged an escort. I'd put money on it. this whole thing is so much like the prefect of police in Casablanca being shocked that there was gambling going on in the casino where he was gambling.

Of course, this is the same media that couldn't check out what aluminum tubes were being used for in Iraq or whether there was a connection between Saddam and 9-11. And to think I used to be a journalist. Ben Hecht would be so disappointed in these guys.

Not to mention the medias lack of interest in Guckert/Gannon and his connection to the White House.

The media drove Spitzer from Office and now the Girl is poised to make a killing for her role in the affair . Yet we hear weeping and knashing of teeth over her "explotation" . seems to me she was well compensated for her explotation and according to today's paper catually sought out the life . Looking at her parents home in New Jersey she was far from poor .
