Our Military: "Dont' Ask, Don't Tell" (Unless You're a White Supremacist)

Posted by Melissa McEwan, Shakesville at 12:00 PM on July 10, 2009.

A gay soldier being out risks undermining troop cohesion and morale, but a soldier being a white supremacist, doesn't? Makes sense.

July, 2006: "A decade after the Pentagon declared a zero-tolerance policy for racist hate groups, recruiting shortfalls caused by the war in Iraq have allowed 'large numbers of neo-Nazis and skinhead extremists' to infiltrate the military, according to [The Southern Poverty Law Center]. … 'We've got Aryan Nations graffiti in Baghdad,' the group quoted a Defense Department investigator as saying in a report to be posted today on its Web site, www.splcenter.org. 'That's a problem.'"

June, 2009: "Salon has just published a big piece about white supremacists infiltrating the US military care of the increasingly lax regulations on extremism in the ranks, now that the military can't afford to be the slightest bit picky about who it takes. The article underlines one of the most worrisome aspects of white supremacists' military involvement and hints at a very ugly possible future in America when a bunch of highly-trained extremists comes home: 'White supremacists may be doing more than avoiding expulsion. They may be using their military status to help build the white right.'"

July, 2009: The Southern Poverty Law Center reports they have "recently found dozens of personal profiles on a neo-Nazi website where individuals listed 'military' as their occupation—the latest evidence of extremist infiltration gathered by the SPLC."

In recent months, SPLC investigators found approximately 40 personal profiles that listed "military" as an occupation on the Internet forum New Saxon, which is operated by the neo-Nazi National Socialist Movement. One individual, who claims to be serving in Afghanistan, lists as his favorite book The Turner Diaries, which was written by neo-Nazi leader William Pierce. The book served as a blueprint for the Oklahoma City bombing by Gulf War veteran Timothy McVeigh. Another individual said he was about to be deployed overseas and was looking forward to "killing all the bloody sand [n-----s]." Still another spoke of his hatred for undocumented immigrants.

Meanwhile, the military newspaper

Stars & Stripes

, reporting on the SPLC's findings,

notes

: "A Stripes reporter searched the user profiles listing their job category as 'Military' and found 130 hits out of 7,906 total members."

But military officials gave conflicting answers this week when asked how policies governing racist behavior are being enforced.

A spokesman for the Department of the Army said the service takes seriously any allegations of membership in racist, extremist or hate groups. But he said such allegations are dealt with on a case-by-case basis at the unit disciplinary level or in the military justice system, and are not being addressed as an Army-wide problem.

So, a gay soldier being out, which has nothing to do with other soldiers, risks undermining troop cohesion and morale, but a soldier being a white supremacist, who actively and publicly wishes for the deaths of people of color,

including the people of color alongside whom he serves

, somehow doesn't risk undermining troop cohesion and morale. Yeah, that makes sense.

Digg!

White Supremacists in the US military. That is almost a redundancy.

Hell, OF COURSE they want to go over there and kill brown people. That sounds like a blast to these sickos. And of course they will use their training, some of them, to mass-murder innocent people when they go off the deep end after returning home.

Why be surprised? Just don't hang out in any large groups of people, especially if a significant number of those people are minorities -- at least if you don't want to be gunned down or blown up by these idiots someday. The hate-encrusted shit is about to hit the fan.

It isn't even a matter of "Don't Ask - Don't Tell" -- It's far worse.

When they "tell," nothing happens!

And with many of these sickos, they don't have to be asked, or be expected to tell, when they boast white supremacist tattoos like swastikas! And that doesn't seem to raise any red flags.

As I said before... If you're gay, HELL NO! WE DON'T WANT YOU!

If you're a White Supremacist... COME ON IN AND BRING YOUR FRIENDS!

This is a sick, sick country.

Ignorant Blurb

This blurb shows the blatant ignorance Alternet and this author have of the military.

DADT is a policy that was enacted because they knew the military population is conservative and a large minority intolerant. DADT is a good policy for the military.

There is also racial "tension" in the military but violence among the troops is not tolerated. If someone is causing a problem they are dealt with. The typical social structure is such that those who are "tolerant" are not going to get involved with others who are having issues with each-other.

If you are going to report on the military you should probably pull some duty and then form your opinions.

This article is really silly.

The more troubling feature of this is why white supremacists are infesting the US DoD

Because they've explicitly stated (and SPLC and other watchdogs have documented such statements) that they are using US military training as a part of their plan to revolt and reform the US as a White's only nation.

That the FBI is openly looking the other way tells you just how deep the infiltration by white supremacists has gotten. It's the ugly underbelly no one wants to look at.

Hope-change, hope-change, hope... splat!

You claim violence in within the troops is not tolerated? Why do I read stories about queer (and mistakenly queer) service members who are harassed by fellow service members until they finally transfer, quit or are killed by these service members who have been abusing them for months or years? I think YOU are ignorant of what goes on in the military.

Redefining the Argument

The Recruiters are not asking questions about WHY people are enlisting. Nor are they telling when ones actions are in direct conflict with the values of the Country they serve.
It's not just White Supremist, It's also the 'End of Dayers' who think they are going to fight the 'Holy War'.
Both these are Delusions of Granduer which have nothing to do with Protecting and defending the United States. They enlist to 'Protect or defend' their race or their 'Lord'.
Even if they don't get a chance to kill THEIR Enemy- they have the opportunity to hone their skills and return home to share that education with their other members.
With the Recent rash of domestic violence by members of these two groups, this recruitment presents a National security concern. Where will they utilize their training next, on whom? US?
Lets be honest the Neo Nazi's Hate this country because they feel the US was on the Wrong side of WW2 and we defeated them. The same could be said for those who claim the 'south will rise again'. How exactly do you think they intend to rise- through Tea Parties? What would it take for them to Suceed? A mere Declaration and we'd let them walk away with the resources that have Ours for centuries?
Lets not also miss the blatant rejection by the Holey Rollers of our Fundemental Right to Freedom of Religion. They have been trying to Overturn that credo since Our country's inception. "The U.S. is a Christian nation"- the Founders CLEARLY Rebuked such claims. The Holey Rollers are trying desperately to confuse God with Jesus, aka "Jesus is Lord"- Not according to the 10 Commandments. Seems these folks disregard (disavow) the second noun in 'God and Country'.these people are not ony in the Wrong Country, they are in the Wrong Century- The 'Crusades' Ended Long ago.
The Homosexual community is not enlisting as a means to an end for their group. They are not being trained, nor participating in the action to aid them in some future armed conflict against the other citizens of this country- But the same can not be said for the White supremeist nor the religious zealots. These are the groups that not only undermine unit cohesivness, but pose a serious national security risk.
It's time the Military Asks the appropriate questions during recruitment and Tells the courts of law when an enlisted places their race or religion's agenda over the interests and security of the Nation.DADT is not just about military conduct, it's about the oath that is taken to serve this country beyond any personal doctrine.Allegience to the Laws and Values of this Country Supercede any self serving ideology
To win the arguement over DADT We must broaden the perimeters of it's definition, it's scope. What constitutes a breach of Oath and Military Misconduct. These Neo Nazi's and Armegeddonists are not just misrepresenting the US, they are using US to train their followers for the civil war they hope to wage here in the future.

Very good points: focus on the Oath

That's basically what you're saying. Aside from the facts that this whole "my race vs, your race" thing being a crock - there's only one race: human. When I was in we swore to defend the Constitution against enemies both foreign and domestic. Period. Many of us have been talking about that oath and the fact that we have never repudiated it. We're trying to remind other vets old and young and active duty about that.

People who have another agenda entirely are in the wrong place. It's like creating an outfit to build a bridge and having another group who wants to build a boat hijack it. You aren't going to get the result you intended. And that "The South shall rise again" bit is no joke either; my grandmother and others used to tell me that all the time in Texas, Tennessee and Kentucky when I was growing up, and they're still there. The biggest damned problem is, how in Hell to you keep to the Oath when you have a president who hands the military over to the Corporate States of America? They've been trying to destroy the Constitution since it was signed.
