It's Time to Drop "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" -- End of Story

Posted by Melissa McEwan at 12:15 PM on July 1, 2009.

Robert Gates said he wants to make DADT more humane; the only way to do that is 86 the policy altogether.

Shaker Phira just emailed me this story about Defense Secretary Robert Gates saying he's looking at ways to make the US military's "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy "more humane," including possibly changing the rule to allow "letting people serve who may have been outed due to vengeance or a jilted lover."

Phira writes (which I'm posting with her permission):

There's just so much wrong with this. DADT is based in hatred, cruelty, fear, and discrimination; to make it "more humane" would require it to become humane. And to become humane would mean, at least to me, that DADT would be thrown out. And I doubt that's Gates' goal right now. Or Obama's.

And being selective about which LGBT people are allowed to stay in the army is just further discrimination. "Oh, you're gay? You're out of the army. Oh, but we know about it because your ex-girlfriend got angry and told us? Then I GUESS you can stay," vs. "Oh, you're gay? You're out of the army. Oh, but we know about it because you had the courage to stand up for yourself and be up-front about your sexuality? Then get out. I don't care if you're our last Arabic translator."

I don't have much to add, aside from this: The stated rationale for forcing soldiers into the closet is troop cohesion (or some wacky variation thereof) -- which has long been debunked, anyway -- but I can't imagine how the military expects to continue trying to justify the policy on that basis if they let some openly gay soldiers serve, with, inevitably, no discernible effect on morale.

And if one gay soldier is already out in a unit, what possible reason could be given to require other gay soldiers in the same unit to stay closeted?

I never underestimate homophobes' capacity for cognitive dissonance -- see: still making arguments that same-sex marriage will undermine the sanctity of opposite-sex marriage even after Massachusetts legalized same-sex marriage and retained the lowest divorce rate among opposite-sex married couples in the nation -- but, realistically, this move would leave them with no rationale (even the crappy one they've got now) to support the policy.

It's time to '86 the policy altogether. End of story.

so you thought it would be based on who did the outing

I thought it would be based on rank.

I suspect our most secretive gays in the military are the ones who are wearing the top brass. For them to be outed now would doom them politically, and their very, very good buddies in Congress and the Senate. That is why they can't allow that.

Perhaps it is their nasty proclivity to sadistic porn that ties them all together. Now I know why internet providers were so helpful, they are all connected at the roots. They will turn together.

Sick, ain't it? Well, what DID we go to war for? The 'surge' is working? All their references are so sexual, and so focused on rape. Denial, lying, rape and torture, that is all I hear from them.

I actually think that DADT would be perfectly appropriate for the military, if it applied to everyone.

QUESTION: IS DADT A LAW? OR IS IT A POLICY?

WHY DOES THE PRESIDENT NEED CONGRESSIONAL ACTION TO CHANGE IT?

HAS IT BEEN TESTED WITH THE SUPREME COURT?

WHY CAN'T THE PRESIDENT US A "MEMORANDUM" TO ABOLISH IT?

HOW CAN ANYONE JUSTIFY THIS?
PLEASE ANYONE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME

Who cares what people do in the bedroom? Geez, stop asking, stop NOT asking, stop making a big deal out of it.

It's NOBODY'S BUSINESS.

Dear Bob, Get over it! Tell the generals to stop quivering in thier boots! It seems that the generals would rather throw out the gays than win the war! Is stupidity rampant at the Pentagon!? President Obama should give you an order to stop enforcing DADT or you could have done it yourself if you weren't a "chicken"! Why Obama kept you own is lost in my mind. As a "bush" croonie you have proved yourself lacking. If you find that you should need any translators they will now cost you ten times what you were paying since they have all become Haliburton "contract" employees! Thanks for saving us some tax money!

Um. er, ah, golly, gee:

IN RE: "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"

Drop it, stop it, erase it, delete it, "make it go way" (quoting my 13 year old daughter last night watching the sad "news" about Col. Choi), put an end to it, et cetera. President Obama can do this with an aglile stroke of his pen (as PROMISED during his campaign –– one of those promises we opted to vote for him because of). He should see to this. He can stand up under the following attacks. He CANNOT afford to just let this go & calmly say, "Have patience."

And, while he's at it, make this deletion RETROACTIVE & bring back those soldiers
(those who will forgive us) into the same branch & positions they held before being discharged –– including the same rank, the same assignments, all back pay, et al.

This is a HUGE Embarrassment to Our Country, as well as being totally unjust & an uncalled for maltreatment of those men & women who care(d) enough to protect & defend us. Let's return the favor. Now.

m. swof.
