Romney Endorses McCain: Was it His Pro-Torture Vote?

Posted by Liliana Segura, AlterNet at 1:55 PM on February 14, 2008.

McCain's vote against a ban on waterboarding must have set Romney's heart aflutter.

News is nigh that former presidential candidate, Mitt "I'd double Gitmo" Romney, is endorsing John McCain. Given the acrimony of their rivalry on the campaign trail a few weeks back, this is somewhat surprising. But then, yesterday McCain cast a vote that must have made Mitt want to send the elderly statesman a valentine.

Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama were too busy campaigning to attend yesterday's Senate vote to ban waterboarding. But John McCain was there. And despite the fact that he has long stood out among his fellow Republicans in his vocal condemnations of torture, McCain dug deep and found his inner GOP candidate -- and voted "Nay" to a law that would outlaw waterboarding and other "harsh interrogation tactics."

The bill in question -- which passed the Senate 51 to 45 but faces a Bush veto -- limits CIA interrogators to "19 less-aggressive interrogation tactics," as specified by a U.S. Army Field Manual. The manual specifies eight techniques as forbidden, including: waterboarding, mock executions, use of beatings and electric shocks, forced nakedness and sexual acts, and causing hypothermia or heat injuries.

One would think that the man who sponsored the 2006 Detainee Treatment Act -- and who invokes his experience as a POW almost as often as Giuliani said "9/11" -- could get behind such legislation. Instead, McCain issued a 12-paragraph statement explaining why, when presented with the chance to hold the CIA to the standards outlined in the army field manual, he "cannot support such a step."

His explanation was, predictably, tortured. But he ended with a flourish:

"We have come a long way in the fight against violent extremists, and the road to victory will be longer still. I support a robust offensive to wage and prevail in this struggle. But as we confront those committed to our destruction, it is vital that we never forget that we are, first and foremost, Americans."

Words to make a Romney swoon.

UPDATE: Not only will Romney endorse McCain, he also plans to "release" his 280 pledged delegates to line up behind McCain which would bring his total tally up high enough to make is capturing the GOP nomination essentially a done deal. I know Huckabee didn't major in math but he should be able to compute that this race is pretty much over for him.

McCain lost his cajones in 2000 and he's just never replaced him! He's an old fart who'll do what every 'they' tell him to do to get the nomination. The little troll would sell out his Mother, Wife, Sister, Daughter and whoever else because he left his Honor, Courage and Self Respect in that filthy cell in Hanoi!

When he gets a good dose of 'Swiftboating', he'll SQUEAL like a stuck pig! What a candidate! JUST THINK! FROM FASCIST BUSH TO FOOL MCCAIN! Americans have lost THEIR Self Respect...

Does someone want to be McCain's running-mate?
(Get in line behind Huckabee and Giuliani.)

Just think, Romney becomes McCain's VP, McCain dies in office, then Guantanamo is doubled and war-crimes take place at Mitt's hand that would make Cheney blush. (Can Cheney blush??)

OK John so procedures that the army wil not use because they consider them torture are OK if the people applying them are CIA . I guess that means those guys who tortured YOU didn't break any International Laws only some Bones
I weep at what you have become because in 2000 I desperately wanted to see you gain the Nomination and was outraged at what Bush and Rove did in South Carolina . They even sunk so low as to push poll against your child . How you could EVER cozy up to those pieces of excrement is beyond understanding .

........because we want him in the race as long as possible. He will force McCain to spend lots of campaign money and he might uncover some embarrassing facts about the old schmuck. (I'm not serious about sending money to a sanctimonious "Christian" asshole.)

McCain and Romney despise each other, you could see the discomfort on their faces as Mitt magnamoniously "offered" his support for the McCain candidacy. It's not about McCain, its all about Romney. Mitt is positioning himself to be the torch carrier for the conservative party which was quite obvious at the Conservative Convention last weekend. McCain, if he is so foolishly elected, would in all probability only serve one term, and who better to pick up the mantle?

I think the Huckster is shooting himself in the foot, (though I love it)as he won't get out of the race even though the party leaders would like him to do so. If he does and McCain puts him up for his v.p. candidate that will be all the better for the dems because anyone who thinks the world is only 6,000 years old and wants to change the Constitution to reflect God's Word isn't going to be that much of a "help" in the General Election next fall.
