Video: Irish Same-Sex Marriage Ad a Surprise Hit on YouTube

Posted by Adele Stan, AlterNet at 2:00 PM on September 5, 2009.

Simple and sweet, this video from Ireland's MarriageEquality makes the best case I've seen.

As same-sex marriage took its place in what the right calls the "culture wars", arguments for same-sex marriage are made in deadly serious tones, and often from a defensive position. Advocates for LGBT rights often find ourselves countering a message framed by right-wing spinmasters, so we spend our social capital explaining how same-sex marriage really won't hurt children, heterosexuals and the institution of marriage.

Now from Ireland comes a distinctly different take, in this video that has gone viral via Twitter and YouTube. It's called "Sinead's Hand." The name Sinead is feminine, and comes from the old Irish tongue. One brief scene in the video even has our unnamed protagonist speaking in Irish, asking a stranger for the hand of Sinead. I suspect that's a signal to Irish nationalists that this fight should belong to them, too.

Here's the video. If you're like me, you may need a hankie to wipe a tear from your eye.
