Conservatives Flip Over Accusations: OMG the CIA Would Never Lie!

Posted by Steve Benen, Washington Monthly at 2:10 PM on May 14, 2009.

Pelosi's assertion that the CIA wasn't upfront has Republicans fuming. The phrase of the day? "Feigned outrage."

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi apparently raised quite a few eyebrows today when she argued that CIA officials misled congressional leaders on interrogation techniques during Bush's first term. Specifically, she said the briefings included "inaccurate and incomplete information."

The usual suspects quickly lined up to express their outrage.

Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) said today that he "totally disagrees" with Speaker Nancy Pelosi's (D-Calif.) assertion that the CIA regularly misleads Congress.

"No, on that specific point I totally disagree," Lieberman told MSNBC's Norah O'Donnell. "Over the 20 years I've been here, I've been briefed constantly by the CIA, and I'd say they've told me the truth as they see it."

Republican lawmakers were, not surprisingly, far harsher in their rhetoric. Sen. Kit Bond (R-Mo.), for example, exclaimed, "It's outrageous that a member of Congress would call our terror-fighters liars."

I realize Republicans see some value in trying to exploit this for partisan gain, but is what Pelosi said really all that hard to believe? I don't want to alarm anyone, but once in a while, the CIA is less than forthcoming with those who might try to limit their activities. This is especially true when the agency is engaged in conduct that might not be legal.

Let's also note the context. It was 2002 and 2003. The Bush administration was not only lying about Iraq, but administration officials had already begun committing acts of torture. It's outrageous to think that maybe, just maybe, the same Bush administration might not tell members of Congress the whole truth? C'mon.

John Boehner said today he finds it "hard...to imagine that our intelligence area would ever mislead a member of Congress." This, of course, is the same John Boehner who, as recently as 2007, said that he didn't trust U.S. intelligence agencies that gave him news he didn't want to hear.

The phrase of the day is "feigned outrage."

Digg!

The Bush administration lied about everything for eight years. However remote the chances of an all out investigation are the whole idea scares the Hell out of them. One thing will lead to another and going back 8 years will be a nightmare. It would include 9/11 and my own personal favorite, The Invasion of Iraq, the reasons for which were ALL made up. There was no 'bad intelligence', only the crap that Bush and Cheney demanded so they could start their war. So if we open Pandora's box using the current pictures in question, there's no way to go but back. That's what they're all worried about. Any doubt about who would or wouldn't lie is more fiction. I think it's time for Pelosi to go and this gives the administration a chance to ask her to step down. Clearly, members of Congress were informed about torture. And if they weren't, they certainly knew it was going on. Obama should use this opportunity to let Pelosi down gently and get a change in leadership in the House.

Torturers, kidnappers and murderers might be less than truthful? Imagine that!

Obama, Holder and Panetta consider them good public servants and are willing to violate US law and treaties by refusing to hold them accountable, using the same logic as Nazi and Japanese war criminals. They want to keep them in positions of trust and on the government payroll.

We already know the CIA is the Burger King of intelligence and will cook up something fast to order, as they did in fabricating rationales for the invasion of Iraq. It's beyond doubt that they lied.

What's really happening here is that the Washington bipartisan cabal has been embarrassed by a few courageous journalists and whistleblowers exposing the whole sordid business as usual. Both parties play to their bases; the Republicans have it easier, because people who think the universe is 6000 years old and that virgins have babies, or that an illiterate guy found golden plates he was able to decode with his amazing Morm-o-matic spectacles, will also believe that the CIA never lies. The Democrats have to pretend they disapprove and find excuses not to do anything about it.

With extremely rare exceptions, when you hear politicians talking about morality and full of righteous indignation, you're being sold a bill of goods.

BOehNER is not only a lying sack of shit- he's a damn Drunk!
In his press conference he states- when I was in meetings there were more Lawyers than CIA. Then two sentences later admits he was not in a leadership position at the time and was not in those briefings. Have another Scotch John.
What, does Boner start his liquid lunch at 9:00 and end it at 5:00. Someone give him a damn breathalizer.
As For Deputy Dog- He can't even figure out what party he's aligned with- since voters rejected his sorry ass. He's as much of a Whore as Lindsay Graham.
As for Bond he's just one of the alzheimers patients they let wander the halls, the legion of senile old F*cks the Repugs follow aimlessly.
So you want to fry Nan? Go Ahead. But is she is convicted of merely 'Knowing' about War Crimes then there is evidence of War Crimes and many others who were far moe involved will face charges.Let's start with the Pitch man McCain who came out within days selling Saddam as the Anthrax supplier. The labs hadn't even identified the strain and McCain was out selling the propaganda...sounds like Johnny boy was in on Lying to the American People...That's TREASON.
Repugs have mistakenly assumed the Dems voters give a shit about Pelosi ( she took Impeachment off the table- we're still pissed). But the more they try to implicate her, the more they confess to the Admins acts were War Crimes. Not to mention we all know she couldn't say anthing since those were Classified Briefings- DUH!
what they have also failed to comprehend is the majority of Americans don't trust the CIA anyway- too many historical facts of covert operations which have screwed US in the past. And most notably are their Whacked out base who think the CIA, The FBI and the UN are out to take over the country. Defending the CIA may not sit well with your paranoid deluded base.Lefties may be screaming about nefarious operations in the CIA, But we are not the Ones Gunning up (and paying for our kids to attend 'Explorer'Camp). So Reugs, you are not only confessing to War crimes, but giving your own base some concerns about Who you Really work for. One thing Liberals and Conservative conspriacy theorist agree on is there are secret groups which use these agencies for their 'master plans'. You just got your names on the list of double agents.LOL

Personally, I've found that you can't believe any lawyers, cops, politicians, teachers, preachers, news anchors, or used car salesmen. My only question is, where did all the treasures from the Iraqi museums go? Whoever said the Third Reich was dead was another liar - or just plain stupid.

With all the right-wingnuttery attacks on Pelosi for her comments regarding the CIA's "misleading" her and the congress, the short-term memory loss of the media and the GOP is astonishing! What about the 92 videos that the CIA admitted destroying last year which showed many of the detainees being tortured? But I'm even more amazed that Pelosi herself hasn't mentioned that fact to illustrate how the CIA does indeed mislead all of us!

If Pelosi Wasn't Informed, She Still Took Impeachment Hearings "Off the Table"

Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
And gave the Bush admin everything they asked for, after campaigning on promises (Obama can relate to this) of ending the Iraq war and holding the Bush admin. accountable.

Sooner or later the truth will come out on paper, hopefully. Personally, I wonder why Pelosi has always protected the Bush admin. and is still not pushing for the investigation that could clear her name. Obviously, the Democrats believe they could be compromised in some way.

But this is not a question of politics, it's not a question of whether torture works or not, and it's not a question of how many people believe it's morally justified, the fact is it is currently illegal, and Bush and Cheney commited War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity! We waterboarded people; Attorney General says waterboarding is torture. Torture is against the law!

The only questions are: Are some people, despite the assertions otherwise, quite above the law; and, are we a nation of laws, or a nation of people who push our laws upon others but do not hold our own leaders accountable to the same laws! In which case, we live in a Dictatorship. That's what they call places where the law is only applied to the lower class, and the leaders do as they please, making up the laws as they go along.

If people think we should torture people--even people that had nothing to do with 9/11--(even people completely innocent..yes, it happened)sometimes even to death, then we should change our laws. We should also change our name. At least replace the c with a k as in Amerika!
But it was and still is illegal, and either we prosecute, or we prove ourselves to be exactly what the world calls the US: A bunch of hypocrits!

If Nancy Pelosi knew about the torture going on, then she should step down, too. That's why we need an independent investigation, and a Special Prosecutor both working on this. It's not about revenge, and it's not about politics: it's about the law, and making sure no one is above it or below it!

The GOP outrage is more than just feigned. It shows just how truly hypocritical these jokers are. They are beneath contempt. Every last one of them should be in prison for gross negligence or misfeasance causing mortal harm to the country. It was the GOP who were in power when they decided that preventing terrorist attacks had to take second priority to Bush's holidays on the Texas "ranch". It was their legislative majority who decided that Bush and his thugs should have full rein to destroy the country without oversight of any kind, so he did. They are personally responsible for the dire straits the country is in today including never ending, bloodsucking wars, a trashed economy and torture accusations of all things. Torture accusations against the US of A. Who would have ever thought in a million years? Of course who would have thought that an immoral, unethical, conscienceless, incompetent would be elected twice by a brain dead electorate either?

My very first course of action would be to disband the CIA, the NSA, the DEA, the ATF, the Secret Service, the IRS, the DHS, the FBI, ---add on any others you can think of on a federal or local level. We have too damn many cops; that's why we have so many in jail and prison. We need to reclaim our country from the police forces.

It's a constant source of amazement and outrage to me that the mainstream media continues to ignore the fact that the Bush administration and the CIA lied to the American public concerning torture and the illegal invasion of Iraq. We were told that government agencies - and I believe that included the CIA - did an investigation and found that the mistreatment at Abu Ghraib was "not systemic" and "did not come from the top" but consisted of the actions of a "few bad apples." In fact some of these low-level perpetrators are still in prison.

So our "terror-fighters" (shades of Bushisms!) would never lie to Congress; they just lie to the American people. I'm not sure precisely what Pelosi and her colleagues were told, but it does seem that congress was "briefed" on the "possible use of enhanced interrogation techniques." Were they told that these procedures were not actually being used? And did they believe this nonsense even after Abu Ghraib was exposed? Even if the CIA lied to congress, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see through the fabrications.

What I do know is that government officials and media pundits all gave us the same line: America does not torture. Now they say that we "had to" torture to keep America safe and that torture works. Obviously one or the other is a lie. Probably it's all lies: we obviously DO torture, torture does not produce truthful testimony, and we did not need to torture and even kill people to "protect the homeland." (This was another excruciatingly creepy expression to come out of the Bush era.)

The CIA lied not only about the existence of torture, but about the fact that this torture was used to manufacture a connection between Al Qaida and Saddam Hussein to justify the invasion of a sovereign nation. Whether or not they lied to congress as well as the public is rather a mute point to me, although it does seem as if congress's reluctance to pursue justice might be in indication they were complicit.

The world, and especially the USA, seems to be in a terrible state these days, but this is nothing new. Anyone who has read Candide must realize that war, government abuses, sadism, and horrors have been with us always. More and more lately, I find myself moving toward the "cultivate your own garden" advice given by Voltaire. Efforts to change the world and the powers-that-be are so often futile and frustrating. Perhaps this is the coward's way out, but as I get older, it seems more and more that discretion actually is the better part of valor.

Down the rabbit hole

If I'm not mistaken, didn't Bush and Cheney blame the CIA for getting the whole WMD in Iraq thing wrong? Why has all that been forgotten? It seems to me that for Republicans and their sympathizers (like Lieberman), it's o.k. for Bush and Cheney to blame the CIA in order to cover up their misdeeds, but it's not o.k. for anyone else.

Another thing, isn't lying to Congress a crime? Isn't that what Oliver North was convicted of? Have those laws been changed? If not, then Pelosi didn't simply drop a political bomb, she accused the CIA of a crime. It seems to me that if she is serious in her accusation, her next step will be to call for a criminal investigation.

Lastly, the irony of Republicans calling for more investigation is quite delicious. They think they're going to get Pelosi. I don't think they realize that they will have to go through the entire Bush administration first before they get to her!

Bush was nowhere to be found when 'shotgun Dick' disclosed that Valerie Plame was a (covert) CIA agent which was classified information. When our embassy in Serbia burned Bush DISAPPEARED. Bush's Robber Baron presidency has made our money DISAPPEAR. With Voodoo Economics Georgie has made most of our jobs DISAPPEAR. But what would happen if Bush really disappeared? Can you imagine 'Deadeye Dick' with his finger on the nuclear trigger? If that were to happen everyone might just DISAPPEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He did manage to APPEAR just long enough to lobby for CORPORATE WELFARE for the international banks. Goodbye Goofball Georgie, have fun in Texass.
