Guantanamo Lawyer Cites 'Ramping Up in Abuse' Since Obama Took Office

Posted by Liliana Segura, AlterNet at 2:58 PM on February 25, 2009.

The claim that Gitmo guards are getting "their kicks in" follows a Pentagon report boasting humane conditions at Gitmo.

On Monday, the Department of Defense released a report claiming that conditions at our prison camp at Guantanamo Bay have improved and are, in fact, in line with international human rights standards. That rather dubious conclusion was sharply rebutted by the Center for Constitutional Rights, which, on the same day, issued its own report, titled "Conditions of Confinement at Guantanamo: Still In Violation of the Law."

According to CCR Executive Director Vince Warren: "The new report details the inhumane conditions at the base that persist despite President Obama's Executive Order of January 22, 2009, requiring humane standards of confinement at Guantanamo. These include ongoing, severe solitary confinement, other psychological abuse, incidents of violence and threats of violence from guards, religious abuse and widespread forced tube-feeding of hunger strikers. In contrast to the military's report, which appears to include very little testimony or reports from Guantanamo detainees themselves, CCR's report offers multiple cases of abuse in the last two months directly from detainees' experiences."

In a disturbing development, today Reuters reports that, in fact, conditions for Guantanamo prisoners have "worsened sharply" since Obama took office "as prison guards 'get their kicks in' before the camp is closed, according to a lawyer who represents detainees."

Abuses began to pick up in December after Obama was elected, human rights lawyer Ahmed Ghappour told Reuters. He cited beatings, the dislocation of limbs, spraying of pepper spray into closed cells, applying pepper spray to toilet paper and over-forcefeeding detainees who are on hunger strike...

... "According to my clients, there has been a ramping up in abuse since President Obama was inaugurated," said Ghappour, a British-American lawyer with Reprieve, a legal charity that represents 31 detainees at Guantanamo.

"If one was to use one's imagination, (one) could say that these traumatized, and for lack of a better word barbaric, guards were just basically trying to get their kicks in right now for fear that they won't be able to later," he said.

"Certainly in my experience there have been many, many more reported incidents of abuse since the inauguration," added Ghappour, who has visited Guantanamo six times since late September and based his comments on his own observations and conversations with both prisoners and guards.

Ghappour works for Reprieve, the UK-based legal organization that also represents Binyam Mohamed, the rendition and torture victim who was just released from Guantanamo. "I can't really imagine why you would get your kicks from abusing prisoners," he said, "but certainly, having spoken to certain guards who have been injured in Iraq, who indirectly or directly blame my clients for their injuries and the trauma they have suffered, it's not too difficult to put two and two together."

Meanwhile, today, Attorney General Eric Holder, just back from Guantanamo, told reporters at a news conference, "I did not witness any mistreatment of prisoners. I think, to the contrary, what I saw was a very conscious attempt by these guards to conduct themselves in an appropriate way."

Obama Is Playing Politics With Gitmo
When it comes to some of the worst "war on terror" excesses of the Bush era, Obama's actions are deeply at odds with the image he cultivated during his campaign.

"Meet the new boss, same as the old boss"
- Won't Get Fooled Again

What's it going to take for liberal voters to understand that the Democrats are not substantively better than the Republicans?

Shame on Obama and his administration. Even if, and that's a big if, no one is getting tortured, they are still overlooking the main issue: the illegal detention of these men.

Would anyone disagree that being held without charge, without contact with your family and friends for years on end isn't torture?

If you think it isn't Mr. Obama, try it sometime.

The High Price of Impunity

Obama's signals that he's disinclined to investigate and prosecute human rights crimes, along with his retention of Gates, support for the state secrets doctrine, and support for Bush's positions on other related issues have probably emboldened torturers, kidnappers, cold-blooded murderers and other criminals acting under color of authority in our name.

Yes, Lincoln pardoned the Confederates, but that was a very different situation. What Obama sees as wisdom and the Republicans see as vindication, I see as craven, disrespectful of victims, undermining the rule of law, confirmatory of our enemies's greivances and disillusioning to our allies.

Well, duh. Funny he assumes the whole world is as dumb as he chooses to be. But, I suppose, it works. People love to think nothing is wrong.

Mr holder...I have one message for your sir. You and the likes of you better prepare yourself for what lies ahead. You are barbaric and you the most ruthless government I have ever had to experience. There is nothing you we not do to cover up your crimes. You and your government have commited Human rights crimes and continue to commit these barbaric crimes. You are right..by stating Guantanamo will be hard to close. I say leave it open because we are building A Guantanamo to hold you and the rest of your corrupt cronies in when we able to bring you to justice.

I saw the lawyer inteviewed who lost his case representing a Guantanamo inmate. The whole thing was very interesting but one thing struck me. He said that he felt sorry for the American Military at Guantanamo. They clearly have to keep their mouths shut or there are ugly consequences. Until people are physically removed from this awful place, and the gates are shut I assume that it will be business as usual. ANNA

This is a perfect example of what many of us have been saying all along - Obama is a good talker but that's all he is. When the rubber hits the road, he's a new face on the same old.

Call Me jaded By Decades of 'Double Speak' by the 'Ministry of Truth'

After decades of euphanisms, I don't take organizations titles at face value. Like believing the 'Patriot Act' was Constitutional.Or that Heritage Foundation refers to OUR Politcal heritage.Or the 'Friends of Israel' who are hell bent on igniting Armegeddon, and limits seats on the Rapture bus to only 144,000 CONVERTED Jews- Nice 'Friends'.
In fact in recent years Organizations work in Direct conflict with their titles. So I've been Behaviorally modified to be Skeptical about this groups claim to adherence to 'Constitutional Rights'.
Besides this matter actually falls under the Geneva Convention's Prisoner Rights, not the Constitution which was solely written for US citizens...So my red flags are already waving about the legitmacy of this claim.
Call Me jaded by years of 'Double Speak'- but I'd like to see this organization's and this lawyer's Track record before I get my panties in a twist.

As a supporter of Obama, I'm truly starting to get upset with him. It looks to me that he's following in the Killer Bush foot steps. How can any of you up here say that these people are not being torture, most of them were kidnap from their country, called a terrorist, never charged with anything, held there for yrs, not allowed to call family, not allowed to defend themselves, and tortured on a daily basic. Just the other day a guy that was held there was release after being there for 7yrs and why was he there,b/c he walked by two security guards and they didn't like the way he looked so they arrested him, now he's telling everyone how he was torture and never charged with anything, after 7yrs. Now ask yourselves, would you like for that to be you. So let me understand this, as a person of color, is it ok for me to kidnap and torture a white person b/c they knew someone or was standing around someone who used the (N)word, used a racial slur against a Hispanic, an illegal, a women or just any racist slur, so I'm right to kidnap you and torture you b/c we all know, that people like them will do illegal things against people that don't look like them. I'm pretty sure you would see it different if it was being done to white America.
