Sisters Carol Gilbert and Ardeth Platte have been "secretly branded by Maryland State Police as terrorists and placed on a national watch list" due to their participation in anti-war protest activities. They were added to the list after Maryland state police spied on them:

"This term terrorist is a really serious accusation," Sister Ardeth, a nun for 54 years, told The Washington Times on Thursday in the first interview that the women have given since being informed they were among 53 people added to a terrorist watch list in conjunction with an extensive Maryland surveillance effort of antiwar activists.

"There is no way that we ever want to be identified as terrorists. We are nonviolent. We are faith-based," she said. [...] "Democracy is built on these elements on being able to speak out to speak what we believe is truth," Sister Carol said.

The nuns said they were not involved in the protests that state police say they targeted. "The spying occurred during the administration of Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr., a Republican."

Aren't states in the US required to follow the United States Consitution? If so, the state of Maryland is acting criminally and the governor or whoever is in charge should be arrested and charged and tried. The nuns are blameless. Everyone should be against unprovoked wars.

These two sure look like trouble to me. Why don't these people so busy upholding the law go to a Palin rally. Why is she being cut so much slack? ANNA

Disguise yourselves as nuns & take over a cathedral. Actually, I like the idea of nuns becoming terrorists. If only I were a nun.....

Those against the regime, no matter how innocent or harmless, are enemies of the State and must be silenced. This is especially true of ecclesiastical critics, because they have the weight of religion behind them, which gives them a stronger claim to authority.

protesting to the facist Bush administration about this?

It seems that it is more important for the bishops to make proclamations telling catholic voters who they can vote for or risk excommunication.
