Earlier this week, one of Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) top advisers, Carly Fiorina, argued for McCain’s free-market approach to health care by noting that “there are many health insurance plans that will cover Viagra but won’t cover birth-control medication” and that many “women would like a choice.” But, as ThinkProgress noted, Fiorina’s argument was undermined by McCain’s 2003 vote against legislation that would have required insurance coverage of prescription birth control. When asked about the disconnect on his campaign bus today, McCain nervously replied, “I certainly do not want to discuss that issue“:

Q: Earlier this week Carly Fiorina was meeting with a bunch of reporters and talked about it being unfair that insurance companies cover Viagra but not birth control. And -

McCain: I certainly do not want to discuss that issue. (uneasy laughter)

Q: But apparently you’ve voted against (McCain laughter continues)

McCain: I don’t know what I voted -

Q: Voted against coverage of birth control, forcing health insurance companies to cover birth control in the past. Is that still your position?

McCain: I’ll look at my voting record on it, but I have, uh, (5 second pause) , I don’t recall the vote right now. But I’ll be glad to look at it and get back to you as to why, I don’t -

Q: I guess her statement was that it was unfair that health insurance companies cover Viagra but not birth control. Do you have an opinion on that?

McCain: (after 8 second pause) I don’t know enough about it to give you an informed answer because I don’t recall the vote, I’ve cast thousands of votes in the Senate. I will respond to - it’s a, it’s a (nervous)

McCain’s stumbling answer is reminiscent of when he was asked in March 2007 about public funding for contraceptives and he could only reply, “whether I support government funding for them or not, I don’t know.”

McCain gets cut far too much slack. If this is some form of respect it's gotten out of hand. I know the guy served his country, so did millions of others. He getting a pass on everything that he screws up. Like Bush, he has been an underachiever all of his life. Why would anyone think that he would suddenly come by knowledge and wisdom. He's gotten this far without it. But he shoudln't get any further. Thanks, ANNA

On the fairness of covering a lifestyle drug like Viagara, and covering a drug that prevents unwanted pregnancies and could reduce the possibility of abortion.

I doubt he will flip flop on this one, but more likely hope no one brings it up again.

Not defending McCain's position on anything, but when McCain answers the way he does it suggests that he may have the ability to carefully consider a question or a position rather than just shooting from the hip, Shrub-style..I'd rather have a guy in office who actually considers ideas rather than just pretending he's an expert on everything when nobody can be. Not that I'd ever VOTE for McCain, just saying that "I don't know" is a better answer than just mindlessly adopting a policy without considering consequences.

other than charisma, youth, and the gift of oratory skill, there ain't much of a difference between the two (see FISA), or for that matter the two parties running America on behalf of the Corporate elites.

He's not just dumb, he's OLD

This exchange illustrates one of McSame's four big, big problems: He is old and is probably in the early stages of Senilia Dementia or Alzheimer's Disease. Just like good old Ronnie in the Iran-Contra hearings, he really doesn't remember! His other big, big problems are that he is dumb, having graduated only a few places from the bottom of his Annapolis class, he is reckless (he crashed several planes), and he has a terrible temper. So how does this loser keep getting a free pass from the media?? Because he was a POW, or because he comes from a privileged and well-connected background? Or is it simply that he has a talent for sitting around and shooting the bull with reporters and anyone else who will be a help to him? Whatever the answer is, grousing to one another on Alternet is a pretty useless exercise---grouse to the mainstream press and TV. It will never, ever be recalled in the mainstream that while a POW he made propaganda film(s) for the VC (something he has admitted to), or that he screwed around with Cindy (literally) while married to a terribly injured wife who at the time was still in a wheelchair, but we just might see this type of telling interchange in the press.

Funny, when I first read the headline I thought that McCain said something McCain-esque like, "You means they have a way to control births these days? What other newfangled technologies will they come ups with next?"!

I hope this is on UTube, it is hysterical! Oh, those painfully long pauses, rolling and squinting his eyes while he vainly searched his mind for an appropriate reply., what to say, what to say?? SO FUNNY! And Obama is up 8 points in the polls today, with a little help from Phil Gramm and other McCain surrogates it will only get better. The differences between the two parties, for those of you that don't already understand, will be evident to you and the rest of America during the conventions. It is going to be a GREAT democratic convention (can't wait!) and a GREAT year for dems everywhere. 117 days till the election (I think)!

see the ironic(usage) message and the sick relationship between JM's age and the question of Viagra. Why the hell wouldn't a 60-70 year old man want someone to pay the exorbitant drug costs for a drug he desperatly needs? Sure he voted for it because it has a direct effect on him.

And on the other hand he is a male. Since men do not have to face the possibility of getting preganant and giving birth, why the hell would he have any insight into what a female made need or want.

The man dosn't seem even have a point of view to remind him how he would have voted even if he isn't able to recall. AT least I know what I am for and what I am against, so even if I cannot recall the vote, I know whether I would have voted fer 'er against!
