Yesterday, two lesbian activists in their eighties, Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon, tied the knot at the San Francisco City Hall in the first same-sex marriage in California history, moments after a historic ruling recognizing gay marriage came into effect.

Diane Olson and Robin Tyler, the two women who successfully challenged California's opposite sex marriage requirement, finally got married at the Beverly Hills courthouse after being denied that right for eight years.

New and improved equal matrimony is in such demand that the Los Angeles County registrar has deputized a satellite facility in West Hollywood to issue marriage licenses. West Hollywood officials are honored to execute their new duties. One hopes that the gung ho officiants in West Hollywood can pick up some of the slack for the local governments that have decided to boycott marriage by turning away gay and straight couples.

The Bilerico Project documents the historic day in words and pictures. Pam Spaulding provides additional political context.
