Horton Hears an Abortion Protest

Posted by Christy Hardin Smith, Firedoglake at 7:41 AM on March 15, 2008.

Anti-choice nuts infiltrate the Hollywood premiere of "Horton Hears a Who" and chant slogan at its stars and their children.

Funniest story I saw all week was this blip from TMZ about anti-choice protesters infiltrating the Hollywood premiere of Horton Hears a Who to chant anti-abortions slogans at stars and their children as the credits rolled. (H/T Feministe) Never mind, of course, that the real Dr. Seuss told them to knock it off the last time the anti-choice folks tried to twist his words to their own agenda -- or that the book was written as:

...a quiet statement against political isolationism and, in the McCarthy era in which it was written, it seemed to be a plea for political tolerance. (Geisel cried foul, however, when the anti-abortion movement appropriated and politicized the central phrase from "Horton" -- "A person's a person no matter how small.")

Guess the wishes of the author and his tiny fans don't matter. Or, in the alternative, that making a public spectacle of yourself in front of a crowd of non-comprehending children and the author's widow can apparently become an addictive yet weird pastime. (Although I do wonder if the anti-choice folks dragged their own children along to the premiere as "kid props" to gain entry, don't you?)

In any case, we are hoping to take The Peanut to see the film later on today. She loves to see movies in theaters, and the Horton books are some of her favorite Seuss of all time -- she loves the Whos and the elephant who works so hard to protect them -- so it should be a fun time for the Smiths today.

What has made you laugh this week? Anything silly or amusing or just plain bizarre? Doing anything fun this weekend -- watching a good movie, reading a great book, buy yourself a great new album or toy or what-have-you? Let's talk diversions this morning, because it's been a long week and we have all earned a break after yesterday's FISA vote in the House. Pull up a chair...

Digg!

I remember a friend of my spouse's family telling me about the pro-life message of Horton Hears a Who, about 18 years ago. I raised an eyebrow then. Personally, I would like to see the pro-life movement start standing up for the post-born once in a while.

My diversion this weekend is attending all four performances of Seussical: The Musical at our local high school. My Aspie son is a Who (SO proud of him!) and my daughter and husband are backstage doing makeup, so I'm the audience. I saw the first performance last night and it was brilliant.

Our production includes a "crew ballet" racing around to set the stage during the overture, Thing One and Thing Two played by two dancers, the Wickersham Brothers on skateboards and roller blades and so much more. What fun--a splendid way to spend the weekend.

...for calling the anti-choice movement by its real name. If they were really pro-life, they'd be adopting all the unwanted minority babies, and opposing the war for oil that's killed nearly 4,000 U.S. soldiers.

Since when has the anti-choice lobby let little things like facts and author's statements stop them from pushing their message?

My daughter was born in a Birthing Center delivered by a Midwife, my 30 year was delivered by a Midwive as well in Alaska.
The Center was having a celebration of the babies that were delivered there, we had a Clown? To make balloons and be jovial. I drove up to the lot and was accosted by a group actually MOB of anti-choice lunatics, actually they had cornered the poor Clown, which babies despise but bloody fetuses, accosting a clown on our property in A Celebration of Life, me being me showed them my 8 month old daughter as she screamed and said they were terrorizing children born there, the OB on staff there provided women with the legal service of pregnancy termination, put my girl in her car seat and screamed my way through 25 loons until they retreated. How sick was that.
The 4 year olds called "Collateral Damage" may serve them better or putting an end to this illegal Occupation. They are of an ilk undeserved of being parents, shameful.

Killing babies in the name of "choice" is evil and at best loony.

Speaking the truth at a Hollywood premiere is bold and heroic.

The children and teens actually understand that killing is wrong and they understand the Horton connection. Abortion will be outlawed soon and more importantly a culture of life will be established. A culture that actually wants the unwanted babies and a culture that loves minorities instead of trying to kill them off.
We are all guilty and we all need to make changes in the way we think and act towards children!

Number of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq War: 3,987 and climbing
Number of abortions in the United States since
Iraq War began: 6,286,671 and climbing
Ratio of U.S. abortions to U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq: 1,500 to 1
