Huckabee Thinks a Fertilized Egg is a Person, Let's Take That to Its Logical Conclusion.

Posted by Pam Spaulding, Pandagon at 5:11 AM on February 28, 2008.

If a fertilized egg is a person vested with full rights and privileges, can post-coital women at least drive in the carpool lane?

Holy mother of dog. It only takes 76,000 registered Colorado voters to sign up to get this on the ballot.

Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee on Monday endorsed a proposed Colorado Human Life Amendment that would define personhood as a fertilized egg.

The former Arkansas governor and Baptist minister also supports a human-life amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Huckabee spoke favorably about the Colorado ballot initiative, sponsored by 20-year-old Kristi Burton and her Colorado for Equal Rights group, during his Friday visit to Colorado Springs. On Monday, Huckabee lent official support to the measure.

"This proposed constitutional amendment will define a person as a human being from the moment life begins at conception," Huckabee said in a statement. "With this amendment, Colorado has an opportunity to send a clear message that every human life has value," Huckabee said. "Passing this amendment will mean the people of Colorado will protect the sanctity of life from conception until natural death occurs."

Burton's initiative, if approved by voters in November, would extend state constitutional protections to every fertilized egg, guaranteeing the right to life, liberty, equality of justice and due process of law.

Well, now I want to know how far Huckabee wants to take this effort. Let's think about the practicalities of such an amendment. I'm not being flip here, because creating a "fetus citizen" status has real-world applications and will necessitate laws and regulations that the womb control advocates need to think out and explain to the rest of us.

* For instance, will a post-coitus woman be able to drive in a HOV lane because she may be carrying a fertilized egg?

* Will the highway patrol need to carry pregnancy testing kits to confirm the ability for them to use HOV lanes on the spot?

* Can airlines charge a woman for two seats since the fertilized egg is a person?

* Can an impregnated woman be punished for poor eating habits, or consuming alcohol or artificial sweeteners?

* Is the boyfriend/husband an accomplice to a crime if he drives her to the abortion clinic? * Can a woman claim her fetus as a tax deduction?

* For couples who fertilize multiple eggs for in vitro, are they guilty of murder if the unused eggs are discarded?

* Should a woman register with the state whenever she has unprotected sex (without using any form of birth control), since she might be carrying a fertilized egg?

* What about a woman who skips her birth control pills, has sex, the egg is fertilized and she later resumes her contraception, unknowingly causing an "abortion." What punishment should she receive?

* And, of course, the current bar people on both sides banter about -- consideration of the a medical emergency of the mother or cases of rape and incest -- how will the state-based fetus citizen council determine punishment?

We know Pastor Hutch and friends want to have control over every womb, but if we take this thinking to its logical conclusion, the state would need to know when a man spilled his seed in a situation where creating a fetus citizen is a possibility.

So, would they consider that to be involuntary manslaughter?

Also, if a human being is created at the instant of conception, then what are they going to do about sperm? They carry 23 chromosomes--literally HALF of a human being, and BILLIONS are being murdered each and every day, in a myriad of thoughtless and vigorous ways! Imagine; all that sacred human potential, slaughtered for selfish pleasure.

I'm going to say a little prayer for all the helpless, innocent sperm--no; near-humans--that will never--well, maybe BRIEFLY--see the glorious light of day before cruel death embraces them........dominae...spermato-vesicles......Amen.

What about the fertilized eggs that become a threat to the mother's health? Shouldn't that embryo be arrested for assault?

How about when a mother dies in childbirth? Certainly the charge of involuntary manslaughter could be applicable.

In either case, police should be assigned to all delivery rooms to apprehend the new person.

How long are we going to let these fertilized eggs go unpunished?

Sadly I DO believe that the idea of a pregnant woman being prosecuted for poor eating and/or alochol abuse is ACTUALLY the LAW in certain States
Yes it would seem to me that if a fetus is PERSON then you should be ENTITLED to Tax deduction . However we know that this would not sit well with Republicans as it would benefit the POOR far more than the Wealthy so perhaps they could redefine dependent sort of like when salves counted as 3/5 of a person

The initiative would, quote, "extend state constitutional protections to every fertilized egg, guaranteeing the right to life, liberty, equality of justice and due process of law."

Too bad the detainees held by America around the world as part of the "war on terr'r" aren't just fertilized eggs!
Our priorities are f***ed.

He claims to support the sanctity of human life so much that even a fertilized egg should be given the full rights of a citizen, yet still supports a war that has slaughtered over a million innocent, fully-formed human beings.

http://thinkprogress.org/2007/12/01/huckabee-jesus/
He also supports the death penalty because Jesus didn't object to dying on the cross, so that proves to him that Jesus believed in the death penalty. But does he realize that in that story, Jesus was innocent?! Does that mean the Huckster supports executing innocent people while crusading for all those fertilized eggs? What a WACKO!

He probably believes that slaughtering Iraqi babies before they reach the age of accountablity will save their eternal souls before they have the chance to choose Islam over Christianity. The Prince of Peace would be SO proud!

Agreed! Jesus, protect me from your followers!

And then there is

another aspect here:

The Catholic church pontificates along the same lines. According to its 'teachings'the fertilized egg is actual personhood, human life that is not to be disturbed under any and all circumstances, no matter the horrific costs to the woman should there be health/life risks associated with that pregnancy.

There are no arenas where the Catholic church will not hesitate to tout its --authority-- along these lines.

Yet for all Catholic women who spontaneously or intentionally abort, there is no mandate at all that the remains of same must be brought in for a Mass oc Christian Burial. None whatsoever.

At its convenience, the Catholic church flexes its testerone-laden muscles over what it considers absolute control over a woman's body, particularly her reproductive function, but when the rubber (pardon the pun) meets the road with respect to funerals, or for that matter, baptisms, etc. the --inconvenience-- from that stance appears glaringly obvious and hypocritical.

So, --conveniently--, the church as usual touts one opinion but when that becomes --inconvenient-- in terms of time, money, work etc with respect to baptism ---silence--happens. Remember, the Catholic church believes that the soul of the fetus, baby will not achieve eternal salvation without baptism, keeping in mind their beliefs about fertilized eggs.

Interesting, as usual.

There goes the pill!

The birth control pill that we all know and love will become illegal under these laws. The pill is a three tier defense against against pregancy. The first tier is it stops the egg from presenting and thus stops fertilization. But sometimes that doesn't work and the egg presents and is fertilized. The second tier is that the fertilized egg is prevented from implanting on the uterine wall. But sometimes that doesn't work and the egg implants anyway. The third tier is that the uterine wall (with said egg) is caused to break down as usual every 28 days. You might notice that tiers two and three happen after fertilization and thus the pill is illegal. I have talked to people in the pro life movement and they (if pressed) concede the point. One of them told me that "well what are you trying to control anyway with birth control?"

Prosecute Huckanut's Murderous "God" then...

Since the imbecilic over-the-cliff right-wing-nutosphere-christianites believe there is "No Natural Selection" then their God is deliberately murdering fetuses by the Billions On Purpose: Every miscarriage is Murder by their God.

These twisted fake nuts need to accept that their Murderous God is killing more "human life" than all humans combined, or, they need to kill more fetuses so they can be more like their God...

"Natural Death"? What "Nature"?

The real truth is:

"We know Pastor Hutch and friends want to have control over every womb"... it's called "Womb-Envy", and Control-Freaks like Huckanut will stop at nothing in pursuit of making every woman's womb their business.

What the f**k do men have to say about this in the first place?

Call it what you will, but you came from a fertilized egg, and your only chance to experience life. If your mama decided to abort you, the fertilized egg, you would not exist. Face the truth.

Most women don't know they're pregnant

until they miss a period several weeks after conception takes place.

I had irregualr periods when I was in my twenties. It was not unusual for me to be a week or more late any given month. So when I was late after my daughter was conceived, I didn't automatically think I might be pregnant. I didn't take a pregnancy test until I was three weeks late. At that point, I was about nine weeks pregnant.
In the interval between conceiving my daughter and peeing on a stick, I continued to enjoy Guinness, Screwdrivers, and Margaritas, and chain-smoked. When I decided to carry the pregnancy, i quit all of it cold turkey.
If a fertilized egg is a person, then can a woman who doens't know she is pregnat smokes and drinks, is she guilty of contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile?
