Iowa Wingnut Steve King Lauds Lobbyists as American Heros for Bussing in Health Reform Protesters

On Thursday, the lobbyist-run groups Americans for Prosperity and FreedomWorks — which were instrumental in orchestrating dozens of anti-Obama tea parties and town hall disruptions — are planning an anti-health reform rally at the steps of the Capitol. Republican leadership, like Minority Leader Rep. John Boehner (R-OH), have endorsed the rally. But two of the most rabidly right-wing members of Congress, Rep. Steve King (R-IA) and Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) are amongst the most aggressive promoters of the rally, with the help of talk radio and Fox News.

FreedomWorks has launched a website called “DontKillGrandma.com” listing recommended tactics for activists to engage in while protesting health reform. For the Thursday rally, FreedomWorks says activists should engage in a “simultaneous chant of ‘Kill the Bill.’” FreedomWorks is funded by corporate money and is led by Dick Armey, the former Republican Majority Leader and until recently lobbyist from DLA Piper.

Americans for Prosperity (AFP) is busing people to the rally. AFP is led by astroturf lobbyist Tim Phillips and is bankrolled by gas and oil baron David Koch, the world’s 9th richest person and the financier of dozens of conservative think-tanks, publications, and politicians. Like they did for the April tea parties, AFP has commissioned at least 10 buses from Maryland, New Jersey, and North Carolina to bring protesters — free of charge — to DC for the rally.

During a speech last night, King thanked the lobbyists for bringing in buses from “state after state after state.”

[Ed: Watch it in the window to your right.]

He likened them to revolutionary war hero Paul Revere for answering the “call of your country”:

KING: If the Founding Fathers could stand in here tonight, the tears would be running down their cheeks thinking of what is staged to happen in this Congress. This is why we need the American people to come to this city and be here by noon on Thursday. Gather together, come to this Capitol, surround this place, bring your passion, your love for this country, bring your patriotism, and bring your signs while you’re at it. Mr. Speaker, the American people need to come here. [...]

There are buses that are coming in from state after state after state, converging on this city. People are dropping what’s important. It’s as if Paul Revere had ridden across America and said, ‘here’s the call, here’s the call of your country.’

Republicans may be growing concerned that very few people will actually show up to their protest. As Mother Jones notes, “As of Tuesday afternoon, the official tea party website indicated that only 25 patriots were on hand for ‘Operation House Call.’” Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) appeared to try to lower expectations for the event by repeatedly downplaying “Thursday’s event as nothing more than a large-scale ‘press conference‘ on the Capitol steps.”

Pure unadulterated evil again. He is soiling the very soul of our nation and capital. Bought and paid for asshole, sorry but the term fits. Tea Party buffoons from lalaland. Factually challenged dolts who insist upon staying ignorant, and you have pukes like this using our capital for his masters.

Lobbyists need to be banished and outlawed, one of the crucial steps for taking our democracy back. This buffoon would be great to debate since it is obvious he knows nothing. Why is it that no Democrats stand up and challenge him? Have they all sold out or do they realize he is a deranged idiot and take pity upon him? Thanking lobbyists for destroying and wrecking our country is pretty low. The recipe is 1 part tar, 1 part feathers, and one big rail, the only cure for what ails him. Sickening.

"The Founding Fathers would Weep"

It is not true that the Founding Fathers were against social programs and that they would weep at the idea of health reform.

The founding fathers implemented many social programs to better America: Thomas Jefferson's press public education, Ben Franklin's Postal Service, a public army - to name a few.

In fact, when you consider that "social" is what we do collectively and "private" is what we don't do collectively, then you must consider that all public programs - roads, bridges, transportation, damms - are "social" programs that are universally accepted as necessary to the infrastructure of the country.

I think the founding fathers would weep to see that Almighty Dollar$ has replaced common sense and that the profit motive has disrupted doctors and the entire health industry.

And I think the founding fathers would weep to listen to the intellectual level that the health reform critics have fallen in arguing their pathetic position, because, in the last analysis, they are arguing for a sick America and for the status quo, where Americans pay more for health service and get far less than the rest of the world.

Busting this current health bill is the right thing to do

It's funny, because true universal healthcare, single payer healthcare, will maybe get another shot at BEING ON THE TABLE, if the GOP is successful at busting up the current's bill passage.

The current bill is another bailout, this time for private insurance. So, if the GOP wants to call it the greatest threat to democracy, frankly, well, they could be right. They are legalizing fascism in this bill. Albeit, the spin is not for the right reason, the current bill needs to fail.

Frankly, as a staunch medicare for all advocate, I hope the GOP keeps it up. Maybe we can gut this current atrocity of a bill and get "medicare for all" BACK ON THE TABLE.

Those busloads of "don't take away my medicare" people...shine the light on them. Then...expand the light.
