Video: Dem Senator Criticizes Progressives for Pushing Public Option

Posted by Adele Stan, AlterNet at 9:41 AM on September 30, 2009.

Sen. Charles Schumer, whose amendment for a public option in the Baucus health-care bill failed yesterday, says pressure from the left is hurting the cause.

Members of the Senate Finance Committee yesterday voted down two public-option amendments to the Baucus bill -- the health-care reform proposal that nobody seems to like (except, perhaps, insurance companies). One of those amendments, both of which would have added a public insurance plan to the legislation, was offered by Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y.

The day before the vote, two organizations, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee and Democracy for America, began airing a jointly produced television ad that targets Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus for the absence of a public option his his bill, citing the $4 million in campaign donations from the health and insurance sectors he has collected over the course of his career.

Last night, Schumer appeared on MSNBC's Hardball, where he told host Chris Matthews that the ad was hurting his quest to get the public option into the bill.

Yet, support seems to be building in the Senate for the public option, oddly concurrent with the increased heat senators are feeling, thanks to the efforts of progressives. Sounds to me like Schumer was saying what he needed to say in order to stay at the Finance Committee negotiating table.

Transparency in Goverment

Health Care "Reform," whether it becomes viable or dies abirthing, has served one very useful purpose. It has stripped away the pretences of Congress and exposed the ugliness underneath of those who refuse to act as ordinary decency and conscience would dictate.

Those who find it in their interest to kill it reveal themselves as either bought off or simply inhumane and mean-spirited--or even worse--both.

Schumer is one more Senate slut. Much more expensive but still the same genre as the $20 street corner pros. The health care debate shows explicitly that Washington, D.C. is the biggest auction house in the world. Government by the corporation, for the corporation doesn't seem to be in any danger of perishing any time soon. Whose country is this, anyway?

That's a rich one!

Play nice with Senator Baucus and maybe he'll come around? Does Schumer expect anyone to take that seriously? Is he just saying to his NY constituents, "Well, I tried, but what can you do?"

More power to Rep. Grayson of Florida.
More ads in states and congressional districts pointing out the hypocrisy of the opponents to serious health care reform and how their position is not supported by the voters.

Public opinion in Arkansas, for example, is in favor of a public option but the bought off? timid? wrong-thinking? Senator Blanche Lincoln, D voted twice against the public option in the Finance Committee votes.

Call these people out.

It would be in the best interest of democracy for Schumer to lose the election next year.

Need I say more? Time for Schumer, Dodd, Frank, Baucus etc. to be replaced. we may not have really good replacements for all of these losers but lets get them out of DC.

Sen. Schumer is just another Clinton crony...

and as Candidate Obama once pointed out, he never met a camera he did not like. He is keeping his promises not only to insurance companies, but also to the Clinton faction of the Democratic Party to not let this policy go through until another Clinton is in the White House.

Senator Schumer is part of the problem in this government and he is not alone. It is time for not just progressives to put the fire under this kind of politician, but for all of us to make them feel the heat big time.

Join me in DC. We can show them what it really feels like when America Roars Her Disapproval! We can show Democrats and Republicans alike what Americans are like when we are united!

LET AMERICA ROAR! LET FREEDOM RING!

And I was taken aback by Schumer's claim that these FDLpac type ads shaming the conservodems was counterproductive. Then I remembered that senators are just like everyone else in the world and will behave like children when challenged or shamed. So instead of persuading them to change their position, they will stick their fingers in their ears and say nya, nya just to spite those who are challenging them.

So it's true that you get more flies with honey than vinegar. And if that doesn't work (and it doesn't appear to), we need to throw the bums (corporate whores?) out on the next election cycle.

Medicare For All, also known as single-payer health insurance, is favored by a sizable majority of Americans.

How can we convince our Members of Congress to enact what the people want?

Let them know that unless they support Medicare For All, you won't support them.

Take the Medicare For All Voter Pledge today.
