I'm a Former Obama Campaign Staffer, and I Want the President to Lead Like He Promised Us

Posted by Mike Elk, Campaign for America's Future at 3:59 PM on September 4, 2009.

This former Obama camp staffer is organizing the rest -- to pressure his candidate for health-care reform.

I just joined thousands of others, including several hundred former staffers from the 2008 presidential campaign, in signing a petition to President Obama, telling him that health care reform without a public option is not "change we can believe in."

As an staffer Obama campaign staffer working as a community organizer in rural Western Pennsylvania's Crawford County, I fought hard for him during the campaign. I worked 16-17 hours a day with no days off for nearly four months, working to get the president elected.

I worked in an overwhelmingly Republican area where there had previously never been a full-time Democratic organizer. I organized more that 250 volunteers into five autonomously run neighborhood teams that conducted aggressive door-to-door and over-the-phone voter contacts every day of the week. These were people who had never been involved in Democratic politics because their area was so overwhelming Republican, but they fought with everything they had because they believed in a presidential candidate who promised to be a fighter against special interests.

There were people like Shelia Lane, a recently laid-off single mother of three, who worked 10 hours every day in the most mundane, inglorious of tasks making sure we elected a president who represented people like herself. There was 66-year old Wayne Hanson, an old-time community organizer, who was recovering from a heart attack and would stay at the office till three in the morning, making sure the plans for our massive Get Out The Vote operations were properly executed.

Their understanding of how important it was to elect Barack Obama led people like Harmony Grogan, from Texas, to quit her high high-paying job as an architect and drive all the way to Pennsylvania to volunteer full time, without pay, to work for change.

It was an incredible moment in American history, when people come together for a common purpose. Never in my life have I seen people open up and work towards a common cause as the good folks of Crawford County did. They endured countless hours of volunteering, vandalism of their properties and, in one instance, being threatened by a man with a shotgun.

On election night, the tears didn't stop streaming down my face -- we won 44 percent of the vote in our county (the biggest win for Democrats in 50 years in that county) and won my home state of Pennsylvania. So many people had given so much and had fought so hard together because they believed in this man's capacity to stand up and fight for them.

I will never forget my experience of those few brief months as long as I live. I'll never forget what I learned: that we could beat any powerful interest in this country if we were just willing to fight hard enough for it.

Speaking at a party for former staffers, a day after he was inaugurated, President Obama called on his staffers to continue the fight they had fought during the campaign. (Watch the clip at around 2:30 -- I've watched it dozens of times and it has never ceased to inspire me!)

He said, "I promise you if everybody in this hall is willing to keep doing what you guys did over the last two years, then I am optimistic about America. I may make some mistakes, but you'll set me right."

Mr. President, we have not forgotten the promise we made that night. We are here to set you right.

There are rumors that you are considering dropping the public option, despite 77% of the American public and the majority of U.S. Senators supporting it. Sir, there is no way we can have real health care reform without a public option. Any real change requires the inclusion of a strong public option to promote competition, bring down costs and serve the people.

If a vigorous public option is not included, it would be a major victory for the health insurance industry.

As Marshall Ganz and Peter Dreier, two of the leading visionaries of Obama's community organizing strategy pointed out in an op-ed this past weekend:

If the unholy alliance of insurance industry muscle, conservative Democrats' obfuscation and right-wing mob tactics is able to defeat Obama's health-care proposal, it will write the conservative playbook for blocking other key components of the president's agenda -- including action on climate change, immigration reform and updates to the nation's labor laws.

Mr. President, we are here to say that there is only one force in this country more powerful than the insurance industry and its corporate allies -- us!

During the campaign, we defeated two of the strongest political machines ever assembled in the primary and the general election. We can beat these guys, too.

We are ready to fight, sir. You are the most inspirational leader of our generation, sir, and we will follow to hell and back in this fight.

Therefore, I am asking my fellow campaign staffers, team leaders, and volunteers to sign this pledge promising to fight for the public option and urging President Obama to fight for it. Also, feel free to email me (at mikeelk@boldprogressives.org) if you are a former staffer and interested in ways you can help organize other staffers to help set the President right, as we promised him we would.

We are the most powerful grassroots army ever assembled in American history, and we want you to fight for a public option. We promise to fight with you every step of the way, just as we did during the campaign.

Mr. President, we are fired up and ready to go!

Are you ready to lead?

Digg!

"Inspirational leader" or false idol? The author of the article should stop waiting for an "idol" to "lead" and take charge themselves. As long as we continue to vote for rhetoric and words (hope and change), we will get what we got. Another imperial, arrogant and power-hungry idol like Obama. Perpetual war, no health insurance, torture and corporate welfare. Dennis Kucinich proved over and over again he is for the people with his votes in congress, not just words. He would have ended Nafta, WTO and the criminal and immoral wars and yes, give everyone single-payer healthcare on day one if he was elected. "I would rather vote for what I want and not get it than vote for what I don't want and get it" -- Eugene Debs.

Well its not really suprising . If you read bwetween the lines with Obama , you could see that this was his real path . Why? because he stood to give rebirth to the American freemarket , and so he has accepted the neccessity to make America compete with the cheap labour economies , to cut its public expenditure as in health care ,and strip away all that is not profitable to the Banks and corporations .

No suprises there , but the real problem is with the bankruptcy of the leadership in the left , Like the Campaign for Americas future .
''trust us we know what to do ??!!!

WELL THEY DON'T!!

Their now in full retreat , and now its begging letters like this ...its pathetic.

These guys are a waste of space . They have nothing to offer but 'moralising' with the powers-that-be to 'be nicer people '.

I think America is heading for its 2nd civil war if the middleclasses and the working class dont get their act together and build an independant movement , that would collapse any fascist opposition before it could emerge and dominate .

Obama is a waste of space ...he is going to carry on with the bidding of the banks and corporations , simply because he accepts the principle of the free market and competition between Nation states and their currencies .

What we need is cooperation between Nations based on a world currency and controlled by and for the interests of the majority. In short scientific Socialism.. not the delusion of libertarian "socialism" which is merely a contradiction in terms .

Politicans (especially globalist ones) lie to get elected and then act like they have no power to do as we were promised (always ends up being a 50 50 split...contrived or not). Their promises just good speech as to what we want to hear.

OR they get elected by popular vote only to have a scandal which puts them out of power to a person who ignores the mandate or just does as they please.

Remember when students, adults, etc. stopped their lives to "save America" by electing Kucinich for President? When he ignored their anti-war mandate and gave his votes to Edwards his campaign workers cried? Many made calls into Iowa to get them to the polls, etc. only to have the time, money, and effort gone.

I feel your pain Obama worker.

Mr Elk, I too worked for the Obama campaign. I, too was giddy with excitement on inaugural day. But today I'm not as mush disappointed as disgusted. Respectfully, your interpretation of Obama's "evolution" on the public option is naive. Obama has not capitulated on the public option to placate Republicans or Blue dog Democrats. There actually was not an evolution at all.
Many months ago, even before he took office, he was meeting with Billy Tauzin, the head of Big Pharma. The same Tauzin he railed against during the campaign. Before there were angry town halls or Republican/Blue Dog opposition, there was a deal in the works to not negotiate for lower prices and to maintain the ban on bringing less expensive drugs in from Canada. Once in the White House, this same Tauzin was a frequent visitor and "health care reform" consultant.
One of Obama's first Cabinet picks was, along with his wife, a leading insurance industry lobbyist. Tom Dascle and his wife have, over the years, made big $$$ from the insurance cartel championing their lies and distortions. Although he was forced to withdraw his name from the HHS Cabinet post for cheating on his taxes, Obama named him as a chief advisor on his Health Care Advisory Council. At the same time, he named one Nancy Ann De Parle, a former insurance industry lawyer, as his Health Care Czar.
The idea that Obama has let Congress take this issue and run belies the facts. He has been, behind the scenes, in an almost clandestine fashion, cutting deals with the parasitic insurance and Big Pharma leaches towards
"reform health care." During this time, people who acvocate for single payer or the public option like Howard Dean have been astudiously ignored. Dean, the former head of the DNC was not even asked to the swearing in ceremony for his replacement. Certainly a clear message sent.
Mr Elk, Barack Obama had MADE UP HIS MIND to maintain the status quo within the industry from the start. He, along with his Chief of Staff, Rahm Emmanuel, had decided to make the insurance industry AS IS, and Big Pharma AS IS, linchpins of his reform." Barack Obama is not guilty of a lack of leadership on this issue rather leadership to the nth degree IN THE WRONG DIRECTION. Mr Elk, Obama has betrayed us, lied to us and fooled us. Just as he sold out the middle class on the Wall Street, bank bailout, he has, is and will do likewise on health care.

is WHY, when the we have large Democratic majorities in both houses of Congress and a Democratic President, are the Repigs still calling the shots? What are they doing? Warming the seat of power until Jeb Bush decides to run for office in 2012?

This is NOT my (or anyone else's who isn't a fat cat) country anymore.

Disappointed Isn't the Word; The Word Is Disgusted!

After watching the above video clip showing the "Presidential Candidate Obama", I was wondering if the Obama who is in the White House is a Clone. Since January 20th 2009, Obama has reversed some of Bush's policies, (i.e. stem cell research, oil drilling, abortion, vehicle emissions, etc.) but, he has not changed Bush's foreign policy, has expanded the war in Afghanistan (which we are going to lose), has continued Bush's "rendition program" - with the exception of "promises" from participating countries "not to torture", and now he is considering dropping the "public option". What a disappointment Obama has turned out to be.

With all the "back room deals" Obama has already struck with "big pharma", with all the "Blue Dogs" resisting the "public option", and all the fear tactics that are coming from the corporate liars who want to perpetuate things as they are, don't expect much of a change in health care as it is today. If this continues the U.S. will go bankrupt, and all the nations who are still buying our "T" bills will stop doing so. Then they will start "cashing in" what they are already holding and ask for some hard currency in exchange for the phony paper we have been selling them.

Obama shouldn't be worried about being reelected. He should be worried about being the last President in the USA, because the next "President" will be a true fascist with full dictatorial powers to put down the riots that will follow. Expect (look forward to), companies like "Black Water" with orders to "shoot to kill American citizens" (that has already been authorized by Congress) as being the primary enforcer of "law and order". Yes, there will be riots. Yes, there will be shortages of fuel, food, more Wall Street deals, more "stimulus money" that will only hasten our eventual bankruptcy. And, this will happen because our elected officials want to be reelected so they can enjoy everything "we the people" don't have.

I say, expect it; bank on it; it IS "Coming to America".

The thing is, Obama is not a liberal, nor is he a progressive. I think that to take from his election victory the lesson that we can beat any powerful special interests in the country is a grave error. I think this because Obama represents "special interests" as much as any other President in recent memory. It is clear from his cabinet appointments that he is governing from the Clinton blueprint--run left, govern right. It is no surprise that he is considering backing away from the public option--I think it will fail and that if it is passed it will be so hopelessly compromised that it will be nothing more than another handout to big business at tax-payer expense.

Obama isn't going to join with you--he is going to work against you--as evidenced by his behind the scenes off-the-record type meeting with "health-care" industry executives.

However inspiring he and his story may be and not disregarding his intelligence, I think his actions show who he truly represents--Wall Street and the banking industry.

You can see my thoughts on Obama's gradualism by looking at my reply to Smalz's posting.

I'm just a disappointed as the rest of us by Obama's centrism, but I've gotta say, I really, really enjoy reading the comments of all of you.

It's nice to know during this, the Summer of Our Discontent, when the thugs of the Corporate Oligarchy are running wild at town halls, on talk radio and cable TV, that there are still so many of us in this country.

Thanks to everyone who commented on this story for making my day!

Our American lives depend on our President to represent us. Regardless of what the legislation is named, there are major points that President Obama needs to address in regards to all future legislation. He needs to stop worrying about Republican obstructionists who are doing all they can to keep the corporate propaganda voices going via the media they own--they are destroying themselves so why worry about them? Also, it "doesn't take a rocket scientist" to know that the rich need to pay up--duh?? Stop worrying about the dollars coming from the rich--it was the 99% of the people sending in $5.00 each that won the election for Obama. The 99% have a great deal more power if we just use our heads rather than be bought and sold by corporate power especially if we recognize the media for what it is--a huge propaganda and sensationalism machine!

The sooner we militarily get out of Iraq AND Afghanistan, the more secure our country will be--military might will get us no where--try building medical facilities, schools, libraries instead! I signed that and forwarded it to my personal email list and to members of the local Democratic party.

I was a data entry volunteer for the campaign. First time since Reagan era I participated.

Right after the election I started a web site to try to keep the momentum going. Not working so well. People are lazy. You can incite interest only so long then we all seem to fall back to apathy until the next crisis. This is exactly why this nation is going down the tubes. People don't care or care too little to keep the pressure on.

We finally have someone in the White House who raised hopes and we must keep pressure on him to deliver to the extent Congress will cooperate then put the pressure on Congress to stop selling us out to the highest bidders.

We have term limits...all we need to do is stop putting the same puppets back in office.

...with my Union, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, and am thoroughly disillusioned. I always considered myself an optimist but am struggling to see any change that is working for most of us. Or for that matter, even in the pipeline for most of us.

Of course I couldn't/didn't believe he could/would do everything he said he would do. No politician ever has and never will.

I voted for him with my eyes wide open.

Wall St owns this man...he wouldn't have gotten elected had they not.

Am too old to take to the streets and just found out yesterday I am to be a grandfather for the first time and am scared shitless for the future of the country and (on a more personal level) my son and his family.

Where are all the real Liberals? Why are folks like Kucinich dismissed so easily?

Why do the poorest states in the country vote for the people who hurt them the most economically? Are god, gays, guns and abortion really what is important?
