Rachel Maddow Sees 'Palin Effect' for What it Is: Bullsh*t

On her show last night Rachel Maddow took an uncommon approach to the issue of women voters in the 2008 election. Instead of hysterically ranting about crazed 'Hillraisers', or condescendingly pontificating about the confused, female multitudes so awestruck by Palin's vagina they would vote against their own interests, Maddow looked at some actual polls.

Based on the numbers, Maddow concluded that the "Palin effect" -- the idea that Palin's addition to the Republican ticket was a stroke of genius that would pull women, en masse, away from Democrats -- is " ... an interesting storyline ... If by interesting, you mean not at all true."

Maddow found that picking Palin did not make McCain more popular with female voters. In fact, "Obama leads McCain by 16 points among women." Among white women, Palin's addition to the ticket has resulted in a drop in support for McCain, with Obama leading by 2 points.

Concluded Maddow, in faux disbelief: "Might it be that women care less about a candidate's gender, and more about a candidate's position on the issues?"

No one from the McCain campaign was available to comment on why a candidate picked to appeal to women is chasing them away from the Republican ticket. (perhaps they were busy explaining to McCain that the Spanish-American war ended a really, really, really long time ago?)

Instead, Maddow interviewed Melinda Henneberger, author of If They Only Listened to Us: What Women Voters Want Politicians to Hear.

Henneberger pointed out that Obama may do even better with women voters than Bill Clinton. "So the idea Obama has a problem with women .... is just not borne out by any of the facts."

Henneberger added that "A lot of women like Sarah Palin and are excited ... to have conservative women get their own version of Hillary Clinton ... but that doesn't translate into votes".

Even more striking, the McCain/Palin ticket is doing worse with female voters than ... George W. Bush has in previous elections.

Henneberger goes on to say, "I don't think she's winning over those swing voters and definitely not those Hillary voters."

Maddow makes the point that the economic crisis may further shore up women's support for Obama. Across the board women (especially single women) suffer more in times of economic crisis, which is part of the reason they tend to skew progressive.

Maddow concludes that the idea that just this once, women will overwhelmingly vote Republican just because of Palin, is "Not translating across the board .. blowing up the common wisdom here.'

A lot of the so-called "former HIllary" posters to these sites who say they now support McCain have, I suspect, email addresses at the McCain campaign office. The polling numbers suggest that there is possibly a dis-information campaign going on here that has been aided by the MSM because it is a convenient and easy storyline. Good work Rachel!

Keep in mind that perception is managed by the media, and likely many polling companies, to manipulate people and change their attitudes and voting. Also, expect any voting fraud to be preceded by messages predicting the fraudulent outcome so it doesn't look as much like fraud.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandwagon_effect
"Bogus poll results presented to voters prior to the 1996 Republican primary clearly showed the bandwagon effect to predominate on balance. Indeed, approximately 6% of the variance in the vote was explained in terms of the bogus polls, showing that poll results (whether accurate or inaccurate) can significantly influence election results in closely-contested elections."

I wonder if the pollsters who we read about were talking about Redneck women when they were citing the lead that Morning Joe and Pat Buchannon keep talking about. I have no doubt that Redneck women are firmly imbedded in Palin's crotch, er ah, camp.

Rednecks and Jesus freaks are the intended audience for the Palin pick.

...on her assessment of "swing voters" (whoever these idiots are in this polarized election), Hilary voters, etc., she may be forgetting the real reason for Palin.

Palin was chosen to energize the base. To get them interested enough to actually vote. These dittoheads only vote one way anyway, but if this base does not vote, McInsane loses.

While Obama has abandoned his base, the noconazis never, ever, forget their's. While I hope I am wrong, this is the formula for another Democrapic loss.

As for me (part of the base), I am voting third party this year for the first time in my life.

I've been paying a great deal of attention to Rachel, especially her commentaries on Olbermann's show. She's like some new sunshine into a pretty bleak TV fare--bleak despite, not because of Olbermann.

Note, though, that in pages like You Tube, what her critics point out is Maddow's sexual orientation. As if that makes any difference!

Thanks for the commentary here, Rachel. (Oh, and to your "ratings" credit, I also watched it on MSNBC. I haven't allowed TV news on in my house for years, and you and Keith are leading me back!)

The story is all over Progressive Talk Radio today about the McCain campaign

sending absentee ballot applications to registered democrats or people that have
donated to Obama's campaign. These ballots are deliberately misleading and
have postage paid return addresses that are for an election clerk that is
outside of your city or town. What this will end up doing is either having
your vote not counted, or if you return one of these, they will cite you for
election fraud, saying that you already voted absentee. These ballots are only
being sent out in 'purple states' and this is a big deal.. This is
called voter caging and is a huge problem.

The McCain campaign is stealing this election as we speak. Please get this
information out to as many people as you can ,and tell anyone you know who has
received one of these ballots that they need to contact their city election
clerk or the supervisor of elections immediately. Also call the local media,
and let them know what is going on. The main stream media is never going to
cover this so we have to depend on our ground campaign to get the word out to
our voters.

Did I see a different video than everyone else? I saw Rachel interrupt her guest several times to repeat a comment she had already made. The guest (brain fart I can't remember her name) masterfully contradicted Rachel to say that it is NOT women's issues (reproductive health, etc.) but the ECONOMY that is causing woman to vote for Obama. I think Rachel missed the main point her guest was trying to make.

Rachel is good, but she makes that oh so common mistake of trying to make the facts fit your theory, rather than theorizing based on the facts.

Hey, the executive chowderhead is right.

Pavlov's Palen may have no tangible asset for any office and wouldn't not ever s(w)erve the public if it weren't for the seditionalist big tent.

Her obediance in the defiance of law, ineractive reporting and history means we may have found a prettier Cheneyjoy.

Comrads, rejoice!!!!

It may have forced some women to take a look at McCain's record on "women's issues" (always a dumb term, considering they should be "everyone's issues").
