According to Spain's El Pais, John McCain would not answer this week whether he would be willing to meet with Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. "Would you be willing to meet with the head of our government, Mr. Zapatero?" the questioner asked multiple times. Five months ago, McCain said he would be willing. But in the interview earlier this week, McCain could not offer a coherent and logical response:

McCain proceeded to launch into what appeared to be a boilerplate declaration about Mexico and Latin America — but not Spain — pressing the need to stand up to world leaders who want to harm America. "I will meet with those leaders who are our friends and who want to work with us cooperatively," according to one translation. The reporter repeated the question two more times, apparently trying to clarify, but McCain referred again to Latin America.

Finally, the questioner said, "Okay, but I’m talking about Europe - the president of Spain, would you meet with him?" The Senator offered only a slight variance to his initial comment. "I will reunite with any leader that has the same principles and philosophy that we do: human rights, democracy, and liberty. And I will confront those that don’t [have them]."
Josh Marshall observed that one possibility is that ...

since the questioner "asked about Castro and Chavez," McCain didn’t know who Zapatero was and assumed he "must be some other Latin American bad guy."

What ever happened to those two beautiful words...

I'm talkin' 'bout:

"YES"

and I'm also talkin' 'bout:

"NO"

When a politician answers a direct, simple, non-loaded question that requires a yes or no answer with a long stream of prettyWords, I just get a little taste of bile in my throat .

what's so hard about

"YES"?

what's so hard about

"NO"?

If he doesn't use one of these two words to answer a direct, non-loaded question that requires one or the other, I will henceforth assume that he means

"I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND THE QUESTION."

I know it sounds stupid to think any adult doesn't know the most basic level of geography imaginable, but I've lost all bearing as what is to be expected knowledge for American politicians.

Maybe McCain is as ready to be president as his running-mate!

Quite a pair.

(But you know, maybe McCain IS qualified to be president,... because Arizona is right next door to Mexico!)

It sounded to me like he was a little hard of hearing. Living with someone who is hard of hearing, I can tell you that those kinds of mistakes happen all the time. Especially when someone is speaking with an accent.

Not to excuse it, but maybe an explanation.

Oh goody another buffoon tarnishes our name. I'm sorry but this is dementia showing itself. He may have tinnitus which could cause some hearing loss but he simply doesn't understand what the subject matte is and even when redirected couldn't get it right. It is really pitiful that the Republicans are willing to settle for McCain/Palin. Their inflated egos obviously don't care what anyone thinks except maybe Rev. Dobson
