EDITOR'S NOTE: The following is an email missive probably read by millions of people by Anne Kilkenny, a long-time resident of Wasilla Alaska, who has known Sarah Palin for 16 years. The author's identity has been confirmed in the press: "Kilkenny, a registered Democrat, sent the note Aug. 30, the day after Republican presidential candidate John McCain picked Palin to be his running mate. She said she sent it to 30 relatives and friends outside Alaska to answer the questions she was getting about Palin. She signed her name and asked that it not be posted, but it went viral across the Internet almost instantly."

****

ABOUT SARAH PALIN

I am a resident of Wasilla, Alaska. I have known Sarah since 1992. Everyone here knows Sarah, so it is nothing special to say we are on a first-name basis. Our children have attended the same schools. Her father was my child's favorite substitute teacher. I also am on a first name basis with her parents and mother-in-law. I attended more City Council meetings during her administration than about 99% of the residents of the city.

She is enormously popular; in every way she's like the most popular girl in middle school. Even men who think she is a poor choice and won't vote for her can't quit smiling when talking about her because she is a "babe".

It is astonishing and almost scary how well she can keep a secret. She kept her most recent pregnancy a secret from her children and parents for seven months.

She is "pro-life". She recently gave birth to a Down's syndrome baby. There is no cover-up involved, here; Trig is her baby.

She is energetic and hardworking. She regularly worked out at the gym.

She is savvy. She doesn't take positions; she just "puts things out there" and if they prove to be popular, then she takes credit.

Her husband works a union job on the North Slope for BP and is a champion snowmobile racer. Todd Palin's kind of job is highly sought-after because of the schedule and high pay. He arranges his work schedule so he can fish for salmon in Bristol Bay for a month or so in summer, but by no stretch of the imagination is fishing their major source of income. Nor has her life-style ever been anything like that of native Alaskans.

Sarah and her whole family are avid hunters.

She's smart.

Her experience is as mayor of a city with a population of about 5,000 (at the time), and less than 2 years as governor of a state with about 670,000 residents.

During her mayoral administration most of the actual work of running this small city was turned over to an administrator. She had been pushed to hire this administrator by party power-brokers after she had gotten herself into some trouble over precipitous firings which had given rise to a recall campaign.

Sarah campaigned in Wasilla as a "fiscal conservative". During her 6 years as Mayor, she increased general government expenditures by over 33%. During those same 6 years the amount of taxes collected by the City increased by 38%. This was during a period of low inflation (1996-2002). She reduced progressive property taxes and increased a regressive sales tax which taxed even food. The tax cuts that she promoted benefited large corporate property owners way more than they benefited residents.

The huge increases in tax revenues during her mayoral administration weren't enough to fund everything on her wish list though, borrowed money was needed, too. She inherited a city with zero debt, but left it with indebtedness of over $22 million. What did Mayor Palin encourage the voters to borrow money for? Was it the infrastructure that she said she supported? The sewage treatment plant that the city lacked? or a new library? No. $1m for a park. $15m-plus for construction of a multi-use sports complex which she rushed through to build on a piece of property that the City didn't even have clear title to, that was still in litigation 7 yrs later-to the delight of the lawyers involved! The sports complex itself is a nice addition to the community but a huge money pit, not the profit-generator she claimed it would be. She also supported bonds for $5.5m for road projects that could have been done in 5-7 yrs without any borrowing.

While Mayor, City Hall was extensively remodeled and her office redecorated more than once.

These are small numbers, but Wasilla is a very small city.

As an oil producer, the high price of oil has created a budget surplus in Alaska. Rather than invest this surplus in technology that will make us energy independent and increase efficiency, as Governor she proposed distribution of this surplus to every individual in the state.

In this time of record state revenues and budget surpluses, she recommended that the state borrow/bond for road projects, even while she proposed distribution of surplus state revenues: spend today's surplus, borrow for needs.

She's not very tolerant of divergent opinions or open to outside ideas or compromise. As Mayor, she fought ideas that weren't generated by her or her staff. Ideas weren't evaluated on their merits, but on the basis of who proposed them.

While Sarah was Mayor of Wasilla she tried to fire our highly respected City Librarian because the Librarian refused to consider removing from the library some books that Sarah wanted removed. City residents rallied to the defense of the City Librarian and against Palin's attempt at out-and-out censorship, so Palin backed down and withdrew her termination letter. People who fought her attempt to oust the Librarian are on her enemies list to this day.

Sarah complained about the "old boy's club" when she first ran for Mayor, so what did she bring Wasilla? A new set of "old boys". Palin fired most of the experienced staff she inherited. At the City and as Governor she hired or elevated new, inexperienced, obscure people, creating a staff totally dependent on her for their jobs and eternally grateful and fiercely loyal-loyal to the point of abusing their power to further her personal agenda, as she has acknowledged happened in the case of pressuring the State's top cop (see below).

As Mayor, Sarah fired Wasilla's Police Chief because he "intimidated" her, she told the press. As Governor, her recent firing of Alaska's top cop has the ring of familiarity about it. He served at her pleasure and she had every legal right to fire him, but it's pretty clear that an important factor in her decision to fire him was because he wouldn't fire her sister's ex-husband, a State Trooper. Under investigation for abuse of power, she has had to admit that more than 2 dozen contacts were made between her staff and family to the person that she later fired, pressuring him to fire her ex-brother-in-law. She tried to replace the man she fired with a man who she knew had been reprimanded for sexual harassment; when this caused a public furor, she withdrew her support.

She has bitten the hand of every person who extended theirs to her in help. The City Council person who personally escorted her around town introducing her to voters when she first ran for Wasilla City Council became one of her first targets when she was later elected Mayor. She abruptly fired her loyal City Administrator; even people who didn't like the guy were stunned by this ruthlessness.

Fear of retribution has kept all of these people from saying anything publicly about her.

When then-Governor Murkowski was handing out political plums, Sarah got the best, Chair of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission: one of the few jobs not in Juneau and one of the best paid. She had no background in oil & gas issues. Within months of scoring this great job which paid $122,400/yr, she was complaining in the press about the high salary. I was told that she hated that job: the commute, the structured hours, the work. Sarah became aware that a member of this Commission (who was also the State Chair of the Republican Party) engaged in unethical behavior on the job. In a gutsy move which some undoubtedly cautioned her could be political suicide, Sarah solved all her problems in one fell swoop: got out of the job she hated and garnered gobs of media attention as the patron saint of ethics and as a gutsy fighter against the "old boys' club" when she dramatically quit, exposing this man's ethics violations (for which he was fined).

As Mayor, she had her hand stuck out as far as anyone for pork from Senator Ted Stevens. Lately, she has castigated his pork-barrel politics and publicly humiliated him. She only opposed the "bridge to nowhere" after it became clear that it would be unwise not to.

As Governor, she gave the Legislature no direction and budget guidelines, then made a big grandstand display of line-item vetoing projects, calling them pork. Public outcry and further legislative action restored most of these projects-which had been vetoed simply because she was not aware of their importance-but with the unobservant she had gained a reputation as "anti-pork".

She is solidly Republican: no political maverick. The State party leaders hate her because she has bit them in the back and humiliated them. Other members of the party object to her self-description as a fiscal conservative.

Around Wasilla there are people who went to high school with Sarah. They call her "Sarah Barracuda" because of her unbridled ambition and predatory ruthlessness. Before she became so powerful, very ugly stories circulated around town about shenanigans she pulled to be made point guard on the high school basketball team. When Sarah's mother-in-law, a highly respected member of the community and experienced manager, ran for Mayor, Sarah refused to endorse her.

As Governor, she stepped outside of the box and put together of package of legislation known as "AGIA" that forced the oil companies to march to the beat of her drum.

Like most Alaskans, she favors drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. She has questioned if the loss of sea ice is linked to global warming. She campaigned "as a private citizen" against a state initiaitive that would have either a) protected salmon streams from pollution from mines, or b) tied up in the courts all mining in the state (depending on who you listen to). She has pushed the State's lawsuit against the Dept. of the Interior's decision to list polar bears as threatened species.

McCain is the oldest person to ever run for President; Sarah will be a heartbeat away from being President.

There has to be literally millions of Americans who are more knowledgeable and experienced than she.

However, there's a lot of people who have underestimated her and are regretting it.

CLAIM VS FACT

"Hockey mom": true for a few years

"PTA mom": true years ago when her first-born was in elementary school, not since

"NRA supporter": absolutely true

social conservative: mixed. Opposes gay marriage, BUT vetoed a bill that would have denied benefits to employees in same-sex relationships (said she did this because it was unconsitutional). pro-creationism: mixed. Supports it, BUT did nothing as Governor to promote it.

"Pro-life": mixed. Knowingly gave birth to a Down's syndrome baby BUT declined to call a special legislative session on some pro-life legislation

"Experienced": Some high schools have more students than Wasilla has residents. Many cities have more residents than the state of Alaska. No legislative experience other than City Council. Little hands-on supervisory or managerial experience; needed help of a city administrator to run town of about 5,000. political maverick: not at all

gutsy: absolutely!

open & transparent: ??? Good at keeping secrets. Not good at explaining actions.

has a developed philosophy of public policy: no "a Greenie": no. Turned Wasilla into a wasteland of big box stores and disconnected parking lots. Is pro-drilling off-shore and in ANWR. fiscal conservative: not by my definition! pro-infrastructure: No. Promoted a sports complex and park in a city without a sewage treatment plant or storm drainage system. Built streets to early 20th century standards. pro-tax relief: Lowered taxes for businesses, increased tax burden on residents

pro-small government: No. Oversaw greatest expansion of city government in Wasilla's history.

pro-labor/pro-union. No. Just because her husband works union doesn't make her pro-labor. I have seen nothing to support any claim that she is pro-labor/pro-union.

WHY AM I WRITING THIS?

First, I have long believed in the importance of being an informed voter. I am a voter registrar. For 10 years I put on student voting programs in the schools. If you google my name (Anne Kilkenny + Alaska), you will find references to my participation in local government, education, and PTA/parent organizations.

Secondly, I've always operated in the belief that "Bad things happen when good people stay silent". Few people know as much as I do because few have gone to as many City Council meetings.

Third, I am just a housewife. I don't have a job she can bump me out of. I don't belong to any organization that she can hurt. But, I am no fool; she is immensely popular here, and it is likely that this will cost me somehow in the future: that's life.

Fourth, she has hated me since back in 1996, when I was one of the 100 or so people who rallied to support the City Librarian against Sarah's attempt at censorship.

Fifth, I looked around and realized that everybody else was afraid to say anything because they were somehow vulnerable.

CAVEATS

I am not a statistician. I developed the numbers for the increase in spending & taxation 2 years ago (when Palin was running for Governor) from information supplied to me by the Finance Director of the City of Wasilla, and I can't recall exactly what I adjusted for: did I adjust for inflation? for population increases? Right now, it is impossible for a private person to get any info out of City Hall-they are swamped. So I can't verify my numbers.

You may have noticed that there are various numbers circulating for the population of Wasilla, ranging from my "about 5,000?, up to 9,000. The day Palin's selection was announced a city official told me that the current population is about 7,000. The official 2000 census count was 5,460. I have used about 5,000 because Palin was Mayor from 1996 to 2002, and the city was growing rapidly in the mid-90's.

She looks good, she speaks well, and the image that is being promoted for her makes an emotional connection with yuppy soccer moms and yuppy women in general nationwide - without alienating the "country-folk."

Democracy fails yet again.

Stupid people should be slaves, not citizens.

We have learned nothing from human history.

is all I will call the neocon harpy, it's clear that she is simply being used by the McCain handlers to glam up his dowdy campaign, note how she is the centre of attention whilst Ol' John bumbles about in the background?
Even if he cons the nation into electing him don't expect this crazy woman to be given free rein to institute a Christian Caliphate. She there as window dressing to get the Fundies into McCain's tent.

I have read in several places about this story that she wanted some books removed from the public library, but no one is giving the list or the name of any of those books.

This is extremely important to know, if she is a de-facto book-burner, she can not be judged like a normal person, she is a religious-fascist who is going to be the vice president of the United States and if no one brings this up, this may happen to every library in the United States and soon, you will have a Taliban like society.

I voted for Bill2x's- was an avid supporter and fierce defender of both throughout the '90's and up to about '04 would have still supported Hillary...But it became immediately apparent during her campaign she was NOT who I thought she was all those Years. In fact she shed a new unflattering light on Bill, I am still trying to rectify.
The Clintons were not the first to have the 'enemies List' that has been a Neo Con mainstay-Vendettas.The most brazen user of this tactic is Cheney and his Cohorts & minions. This school yard mentality has plagued our Country's Democracy for Decades now.
Black Listing is still Alive & Well- Censorship and discrimination, if not outright Personality assasination(Iran Hostage/ Iran Contra?Anyone?)
It time Americans remind these PUBLIC SERVANTS - WE dont' give a shit Who you Like & Don't like- Get the shit done we TELL YOU to!
These type of tactics are not Only 'UnAmerican' (Naziish), they are potentially treasonous. Consider they Black list another Public servant who is working on a Project WE have Demanded- ie Real Energy Independence for Americans (making Multinational Oil Corps compete Agaist US - revoking & repro'ing property and equipment WE Own or was purchased through Tax breaks, Loopholes and Loans( still not repaid investments to the US citizens). If they derail the efforts of a public servant who is actually working in the interest of AmericaNs, Are they Not also basically committing Treason against US?
Let's not forget Plain (Palin) is a successionist and a End Of Dayer! She hates America and humanity! She is a DOMESTIC ENEMY!
Sen Obama took on the Right wings favorite Whore- BillO, so will Mac take on Olbermann, Maddow? WILL Palin? Her 'interview' will be done by "Lapel Pins" Gibson!!!He lost ALL creditability during that ABSOLUTELY USELESS 'DEBATE' between Obama & Clinton! So ABC had better get a sharper TOOL then' "God Bless America" DOESN'T require hand over heart Charlie'.
WE HAVE BIGGER RIGHT & RESPONSIBLITY TO VET THIS CANDIDATE FOR OUR 2nd IN COMMAND JOB!!!

SOMETIMES THEY WRITE FAKE LETTERS
Posted by: bbfmail on Sep 9, 2008 7:25 AM
Current rating: 1    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
http://riverdaughter.wordpress.com
/2008/09/05/sometimes-they-write-fake-letters/

Since Sarah Palin’s electrifying speech on Wednesday, several “letters” have begun to pop up in the “progressive” blogosphere from people who supposedely know Sarah Palin. Surprisingly, the things they “know” are straight from Axelrod’s talking points play book. The first was from Anne Kilkenny who lives in Wasilla Alaska. This was on many Obama supporting websites, but I found this version on the top rated blog on wordpress yesterday, its called Mudflats. The author of the post prefaces it with no citation other than this has been “circulating” lately:

This letter has been circulating for a couple days now, and I thought I’d post it in full for those who haven’t had a chance to read it. One of the best ways to become informed about local politics is by attending city council/assembly meetings. I know this from mind-numbing, clock-staring, experience. There’s no substitute for butt-in-the-chair observation, no matter how awful it is to sit for hours on end listening to a bunch of bloviating local politicians. But it’s difficult not to show who you are.

This letter is written by someone who knows Sarah Palin, lives in Wasilla, and has city council lurker cred. (There ought to be a badge for that.) I think that babygate is on the way out of the news cycle, and the next aspect of her life to come under scrutiny will be her tenure as mayor. This is a good place to start. And thanks to Anne Kilkenny for speaking out. Wasilla is a small town. It takes a certain amount of conviction and downright bravery to lay it all out there like this. So a hat tip and a big sweeping bow to Anne.

.... It gets credibility from the fact that there is a real name associated with it. There is no context however. There may actually be an “Anne Kilkenny” but her observations are nothing more than opinion disguised as “eye-witness” observation. This one even made its way into the New York Times, as this “Kilkenny” was quoted in an article on Palin:

Anne Kilkenny, who said she voted for Ms. Palin in city elections, said she became disillusioned with her after participating in Wasilla city government and seeing Ms. Palin up close.

“You’ve got to remember,” Ms. Kilkenny said, “we are not much bigger than a high school and she is the homecoming queen.”

So I’m guessing either the name was lifted from the Times and added to the letter to give credibility, or Kilkenny is just a shill. Either way the letter is nothing but pure propaganda. First the author sets up herself as a credible witness:

am a resident of Wasilla, Alaska. I have known Sarah since 1992.
Everyone here knows Sarah, so it is nothing special to say we are on a first-name basis. Our children have attended the same schools. Her father was my child’s favorite substitute teacher. I also am on a
first name basis with her parents and mother-in-law. I attended more City Council meetings during her administration than about 99% of the residents of the city.

She is enormously popular; in every way she’s like the most populargirl in middle school. Even men who think she is a poor choice and won’t vote for her can’t quit smiling when talking about her because she is a “babe”.

So the writer starts out saying she “knows” Palin on a first name basis (but then again, so does everyone else in the town). The second paragraph is telling in that the jump from praise of Palin to sexist takedown is extreme. “She may be a ‘babe’ but men won’t vote for her”. That’s seems more like analysis of the male electorate than description of Palin. Anyway, the letter quickly devolves into very specific talking points:

I think Joe Biden should simply ask Gov. Palin to state any specific policy areas where she differs from Dick Cheney. Granted, she doesn't have $100 million in Hallibuton options, but she supports very major failed policy that Republicans have pursued, and her record suggests that she would try to politicize any agency she is entrusted with.

There are so many points to ponder in this comment from a woman who knows Ms. Palin.

I think we all have known super-ambitious women who will step on anyone to achieve their goals, and it seems Sarah Palin is one of them. She seems to do whatever expedites her own agenda, and it is always not in the public good. A very good indication of her super-ambition is her use of her daughter. I can't imagine accepting a nomination to be vice-president of this country, if I knew my daughter was pregnant, 17 years old, and unmarried. Any loving mother would have said, "no thank you, but thank you for considering me", and then have eliminated any such publicity on her family. To see this young woman publicly paraded across the convention floor, and to be subjected, with her young boy friend, to such intense publicity, was heartless.

Sarah Palin presents herself as a good christian woman, but she comes across and is, in my opinion, a grasping, ambitious fool, who should never be considered for a position a heartbeat away from the presidency.

It is indicative of the foolishness of the McCain campaign that he approached Sarah Palin to be his vice-presidential nominee. Anything to win...especially if it will bring in the right wing conservatives and their votes.

Does no one remember the last election? He is following the same path, the one that successfully re-elected George Bush....get the religious right in his corner. It is known fact that pastors in some fundamentalist churches were telling their faithful members to vote for Bush. If they didn't vote for Bush, they weren't 'christians'. The religious right is the most dangerous group in our country, in my opinion. John McCain has realized how powerful they are, and has decided to use them to promote his own candidacy. Using a pit-bull like Sarah Palin to energize all the right wing christian voters might just put him over the top.

I worry about our country and our constitution. I worry about our freedom of religion, which also should cover freedom 'from' religion. I worry about womens rights under such an administration. President Bush has tried to change the supreme court by adding more right wing members. Roe vs. Wade is in great danger under such an administration.

This is supposed to be a country of freedom. A country of personal rights and freedoms to choose one's individual pathway in life.

A vote for the McCain-Palin ticket is a vote for repression and a vote in the opposite direction of what this country should stand for.

Do you believe her? Governor Palin is, after all, a politician with a pretty good success rate with changing her story (bridge to nowhere) and with her ruthless behavior (pitbull with lipstick).

I never believed for a second in President Bush's Faith, nor do I believe in the Governor's. Come on, now. What I see is two pretty slick operators taking easy advantage of a big bunch of people who are extremely naive in their inclination to believe when they hear what they want to hear. These folk don't question anyone who says he was saved by our Lord Jesus Christ. These kind of folk are too polite to question such talk, even when it comes from obvious liars. These are for the most part pretty goodhearted people, and it ill becomes us to make fun of them. But they do have a little problem with critical thinking, as we all do. They call themselves pro-life, but they for the most part favor capital punishment, and many of them are thrilled whenever they personally kill a four-footed creature. Pro-life?

Let's be clear about this. God in Heaven did not protect Spain and the New World from the Catholic fanaticism of Ferdinand and Torquemada. God in Heaven did not protect the Jews from Hitler or the Russians from Stalin. He is not likely to protect us from "President" Palin (although deToqueville was of the opinion that He protects all drunks and Americans.)

I join the rousing chorus of thanks to Ms. Kilkenny. If they run her out of Alaska, I hope she moves to North Carolina; we could use a few more like her.

McCain and Palin -- every Freudian's wet dream!

A 72 year-old "momma's boy" and a "dickless wonder" (who hates black cats!)

Both should be arrested for lack of development!

If, by introducing Sarah Palin, Karl Rove was trying to divert the nation's attention from the issues that are important in this country, he has succeeded. Anybody who heard her Convention speech would agree that she is an excellent communicator. But, as Sen. Obama would say, "Enough!". Let's focus our attention on what's important. If you haven't done so already, go to http://www.kucinich.us/ and sign the petition that you'll find there, TODAY.

I believe everything this woman had to say... And please listen to me... you may not like Democrats, you may not like OBAMA... but the idea that this woman will have the second highest position in the United states, and be a heart beat away from the White House as commander in chief, with the BUTTON in her purse, ready to push at any moment should be scary as hell.... to every man woman who can vote. Stop this madness!!!

I believe every word this neighbor Ms Kilkenny stated in her letter. This woman is a dangerous thing for our nation. She is a wolf in sheep's clothing and will eat this nation alive and will spit out the bones and keep walking. If the investigative reporters would do their jobs on this matter, I am sure they would uncover even more facts that should make any man, and woman in American know that this woman was WRONG, IS WRONG, and is a true danger to our nation. This is my strong opinion, based on everything I have read, and based on what I see. I am not fooled by her, nor impressed by her or her family. I see right through her. It is a nightmare of a thought that she could be a heart beat away as commander in chief. If that happens, we had all better find a cave to live in, because war will follow.

If McCain had chosen you, I might have voted for him just to see you reach high office. The fact that he didn't, and that so many good, caring people like you don't seek office let alone win elections, speaks volumes about what's wrong with the US.

You're a constant reminder of how far we've fallen, and how we need to catch up fast. If hope has any audacity this year, it's because of everyone like you who walks the walk. Thanks for a very informative article.

Kilkenny's story about Palin needs to get out more around the nation. Too many people, including women, have been spun into Palin's web of deceipt and fluff- too many people are now looking at appearances, and not the issues at hand. I should know, I live in Alaska, near the "town" of Wasilla where Palin is from. If McCain is voted in, we are in for a real rude awakening people !!!

Palin is a female version of George Bush. Can the US survive another 4 or 8 years of the Bush administration?
