Republican National Convention: Whitest in Forty Years

As America diversifies, the GOP goes against the grain.

Last month, the wingnuts freaked when Howard Dean called the GOP "the white party." But chances are if you saw the convention last night, you didn't see much color.

Organizers conceived of this convention as a means to inspire, but some African American Republicans have found the Xcel Energy Center depressing this week. Everywhere they look, they see evidence of what they consider one of their party's biggest shortcomings.

As the country rapidly diversifies, Republicans are presenting a convention that is almost entirely white.

Only 36 of the 2,380 delegates seated on the convention floor are black, the lowest number since the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies began tracking diversity at political conventions 40 years ago. Each night, the overwhelmingly white audience watches a series of white politicians step to the lectern -- a visual reminder that no black Republican has served as a governor, U.S. senator or U.S. House member in the past six years.

"It's hard to look around and not get frustrated," said Michael S. Steele, a black Republican and former lieutenant governor of Maryland. "You almost have to think, 'Wait. How did it come to this?' "

How'd it come to this, Mike?

Maybe it's that the Bush economy has been absolutely brutal on minorities. Or perhaps it was that a Republican President sat on his hands while New Orleans drowned, then didn't rebuild the city as promised. Might also be the ugly nativism that runs through the GOP's official party platform like a sewer. Or it could've been the not-so-thinly veiled racist attacks on Barack and Michelle Obama. Mystery solved!

The lack of diversity is out of sync with the demographic changes in the United States. The Census Bureau reported last month that racial and ethnic minorities will make up a majority of the country's population by 2042 -- almost a decade earlier than what the bureau predicted just four years ago. Two-thirds of Americans are non-Hispanic whites, 12.4 percent are black and 14.8 percent are Hispanic, according to 2006 census numbers.

...

"If we don't get better at reaching out, we're in big trouble," agreed Michael Williams, a black Republican who chairs the Texas Railroad Commission and who spoke Wednesday night. "It doesn't take much to see that this is not what America looks like. . . . We're trying, but we're not there yet."

Not by a longshot. And they're already in big trouble.

Digg!

What an asshole. He is a willing tool of the republican party and has the fucking nerve to complain that our race is not being represented by republicans.
If there was a more stunning disconnect from reality shown this week, it was the republican convention tonight and their screeching about how all the bad shit that is going on in this country is being done by the democrats.
They basically listed EVERY failure of dubya's reign and blamed it on us.
EXCUSE ME? who the hell has been in charge for the last eight disastrous years?

I can only agree with the article. When I saw a camera-pan of the convention the other evening, I couldn't believe the demographic that was presented. An audience that was devoid of colour, almost exclusively male, and with an average age that made one wonder if it wasn't a geriatrics convention that was being transmitted.
I know that it's bigotted to generalise, but I couldn't help thinking what a bunch of religiously fanatical rednecks (white by definition). This is the Republicans powerbase? That's a frightening picture.
Where was the diversity, both ethnic and age wise, that we saw at the Democrat's convention? Where was the energy and positivity? The Repugnants seem only to be able to offer crusty, narrow-minded negativity, swathed in a dusty layer of testosterone, looking for a last hurrah! (More a gurgle; hopefully a death rattle)
And the speeches! I haven't as yet heard one positive comment, apart from Obama is apparently good at rhetoric. Er, pardon me but shouldn't all presidential candidates be good orators? Or is it a positive ideal in the Republican ranks that the President is a bumbling, mumbling monosyllabic? Lord knows, they've already tried that one; and look how that's turned out.
Nor can I understand the GOP's attacks on Obama. Every supposed failing, GW's got in spades. The Republicans seem to fighting an election for a Commander-in-Chief as opposed to a President. Maybe the Republicans feel that John McCain only has one string to his bow(?) Personally I think that both John Mc and the American people deserve better than that.
All power to Obama for taking the high ground, making the family sacrosanct. The Republicans seem to have no other aspirations other than to be mud-dwellers, slinging filth left and centre [sic]
I hope that the growing ethnically based middle-class that is so often touted as the future of the Republican Party, take a long look at this party convention. Maybe then they will realise that there really isn't a place for them in the party. The Republican party as it is today, has absolutely no intention of changing the status quo; neither in the country, nor the party. It really is the last bastion for everything that doesn't make America great.

What were the Democratic Conventions demographics?

Playing Devil's Advocate here: but before we get all self-congratulatory, let's see the numbers for the DNC.

I'm betting, while better, they don't match up very well against the demographics of the country as a whole.

Love to be proven wrong though!

Many thousands of Black citizens' names will be stripped from the voting lists, so confidence is high. McCain will win because the fix is in.

When I was on the site anysoldier.com I was surprised to see that so many soldiers are minorities. The RNC certainly was not representing them.

If 25% of the people at the Democratic convention were black that means that 75% were NOT BLACK. So how can Senator Obama's most loyal supporters be only young voters and minorities. I saw people of all age groups.

And if Palin is what Hillary supports want, then these people have problems that can only be dealt with on the couch.

Talk about biting off your nose to spite your face.

Common sense

The lack of blacks in the Republican party goes to prove that blacks have a higher precentage of common sense than whites. Reason being they are smart enough to actually vote and belong to the party that best supports their interests. By that I mean all of their interests balanced between social and economical.
There are far too many whites that vote against their best interests because of extreme social issues only.

Real World

I know it is fun to hate on the repubs, but if you take a step back and look at it, it really is not healthy for the nation in the long run for the Republican Party demographics to look as they do. If the parties were more demographically balanced, the race-tinged messages frequently used in GOP canpaigns would soon be a thing of the past. That is what happened with the Democrats. Just a little lesson for those that forgot or those that did not know, Black America's allegiance to the Democrats is a relatively recent thing. From the formation of the Republican Party in the late 1850's until the depression of 1929, Blacks were solidly with the GOP. What support the Democrats had among Blacks was exclusively in the North and since most Blacks at the time lived in the South , it was relatively minor. It was not until the election of FDR did Blacks affiliate with the Dems in significant numbers, at least in the North. (Black southerners were still completely disenfranchised). Slowly between 1932 and 1964 did Black America move to the Democrats. The election of 1964 really was the watershed. Goldwater's anti-civil rights position was so abhorrent that Blacks en-mass switched. On top of that in 1965 LBJ signed the civil rights legislation solidifying the connection.

If the GOP would stop race bating, over time there would be movement by some back to the GOP. Most of the Civil Rights movement leadership of the 1950s and 1960s, especially in the South were Republicans. Surprised? You certainly didn't think they supported the Dixiecrats of the South did you?

The GOP can race bait like they do only because there is no significant push back within the party. The situation as it exists now is toxic to the political life of the nation.
