Poll-Watch: RNC Delegates as Out of Touch as Bush and Other Fun Facts

Posted by Ari Berman, The Nation at 11:11 AM on September 2, 2008.

Who are the 25 percent of voters who still approve of the job W. is doing? The delegates at the RNC apparently.

It's often asked who are the 25 percent of voters who still approve of the job President Bush is doing as President. Answer: they're delegates at the Republican Convention!

The New York Times ran a fascinating poll yesterday examining what Republican delegates believe, as compared to other Republicans, the public at large and their Democratic counterparts. The findings confirm that President Bush is no more out of touch than John McCain's delegates.

A quick sample of the beliefs of GOP delegates:

** 79 percent approve of President Bush's handling of the presidency.

** 57 percent believe the economy is doing "very or fairly good."

** 77 percent believe it's more important to keep taxes low rather than provide all Americans with healthcare coverage.

** 80 percent believe the US was right to invade Iraq.

** 75 percent believe developing new sources of energy is more important than protecting the environment (20 percent volunteered "both").

** 9 percent believe abortion should be generally available, while 38 percent advocated stricter limits and 43 percent said it should be illegal.

** The only surprising finding was that 6 percent believe in gay marriage and 43 percent believe in civil unions for gay couples, compared to 46 percent who believe there should be no legal recognition. Thus more Republican delegates support some kind of domestic partnership for gay couples than oppose it. Paging Larry Craig!

Then let's call off the protesters

These people have their heads so far up their own ass, I don't think they would even see or hear the protesters if they walked through a rally. Instead of trying to reach the delegates, the protesters should be trying to reach the media. Stay away from the fascist cops. I'm all for protesting, but it doesn't seem worth it to try and influence these idiots. They're lost causes.

Considering 1/3 of the Republic elected officials

haven't got the time to attend their own Convention, and considering the Republics have lost fully 1/3 of their registered voters this election cycle, exactly who is left in St. Paul?

I wonder what flavor Kool-Aid they are serving, and what is it spiked with?

Maybe they believe that eventually they'll be right and we'll all come to our senses. For such a small segment of the population they have far too much influence and get too much attention. They're like an annoying fly that just won't go away. To take such a small sampling of the population and break it down even further almost seems like an attempt to create respectable looking numbers, if you don't look too closely. Surely there are people who matter more. Thanks, ANNA

it doesn't matter what the rest of the country thinks. he who has the gelt wins. has it not always been so? so they can think whatever they want, be as deluded, high-handed ( e.g., the delegate who responded to abc's brian ross's question about whether it is decent to party hearty when gustav is wiping out people's homes by saying, "everyone has hard times") and supercilious as they wish. nobody gets to be "good friends" with a lobbyist if he doesn't have or at least have some control over a lot of MONEY. money talks, and bullshit attends the RNC.

what you'll see at the gathering in St. Paul is a huge infested boil on the ass of world peace. festering with repug speak and oozing putrid lies in an attempt to destroy this country.

HOW INTERESTING. FORTY THREE PERCENT SUPPORT CIVIL UNIONS. THE REASON IS

simple. You don't have to go very far in any family of any size to find a great uncle or second cousin that is gay. Even republicans know that. Heterosexual males with weak egos fear homosexuality. This fear is a form of cowardice.

The republican talking points are created, discovered, to cause wild emotional responses in certain minorities. The purpose of these is to cause normally sensible people to get their mind off of their own self interests and do something stupid. It seems to work really well.

Most of these talking points involve fear. Since they spark fear one may simply conclude that republicans are especially fearful. One may then conclude that republicans are cowards.

Almost comic to watch this horde of antideluvian knuckle draggers trying so desperately to rebrand themselves as reasonable and "mainstream." They ran this country into the ground over the last 25 years and now they think that a 3-day infomercial is gonna make us all forget. I'm not buying it!

The TV cameras pan the convention floor desperately searching for the 3 or 4 non-white delegates in the hall. Guess I saw one each of Asian, African American and a couple Latinos, but mostly just a whole lot of painfully stiff caucasians who all look like they've been forced to swallow a dill pickle. YUCK!

Truly disturbing was the way this crowd reacted whenever the topic of abortion came up; that seems to be the only thing that truly animates them; otherwise it was like watching a bunch of really tired funeral directors on tranqs.
