Posted by The Masher, AlterNet at 4:55 PM on August 25, 2008.

An exuberant Maddow called for a stronger progressive media to counter the right-wing propaganda machine.

It was a cute scene, Rachel Maddow jumping up and down on the stage, her exuberant, comfortable self coming out amidst her progressive stalwarts and Air America cohorts at the Big Tent. "How freaking awesome it is to be here at the Democratic Convention and with all you progressives," she yelled.

She reminded the audience at the Air America Radio/Progressive Book Club super author panel: "The right wing still has this massive infrastructure that funds think tanks and pays writers and buys up tons of books, too often dominating the public dialogue. What we have is great authors, and a small, but kick-ass progressive media, but we've got to keep working until we have an omni media."

Maddow offered a semi-insider publishing coup by announcing that Mark Green, President of Air America Radio and John Podesta, head honcho at the Center for American Progress, are publishing a book called the "Progressive Blueprint," by Basic Books in preparation for the hoped for incoming Obama administration. This is important stuff to be thinking ahead about, but it makes The Masher a little nervous, since the CAP hasn't always been the font of progressive wisdom, especially on foreign policy. But let's hope for the best.

Then Maddow bolted off the stage headed for her night job, providing prime-time coverage for MSNBC on the opening night of the convention. These days, her night job takes precedent, but she is totally committed to her slot on Air America Radio, giving the network their first truly home-grown super star.

Digg!

Compete with NPR?

I have no objection to trying to develop a left-wing media power, but the main problem for Air America is surely that they are in the position of trying to attract listeners away from National Public Radio which, while rightwingers accuse it of having a liberal bias, I listen to for maybe that reason, besides the fact that its information value usually exceeds talk radio format anyway. And I must admit on odd occasions where there's no FM radio around to get NPR, I listen to right wing jocks like Prager and Medved, even Limbaugh and Savage, because I am curious what they're saying, and because I have a need to know what they're saying in order to know how to answer it.

So my apologies to those who may be disappointed that Air America doesn't get more support, I wish Rachel well anyway.

Somewhat off-topic, but the celebratory note of the book being published gives me pause.

This progressive book is being published by Basic Books? Ok, I know that Basic has a pretty good reputation, but it is an imprint of Perseus Books. Perseus Books also owns Perseus Distribution, which handles a whole bunch of imprints - most notably, Regnery.

Regnery, for those who may not know, is a vile right-wing imprint known for "Unfit for Command" and the new "Obama Nation". You can pretty much count on anything they print to be a lie, and that includes their sales numbers.

So why go to them to publish this book? I know, it's a different imprint, but in these days of umbrella corporations, it isn't hard to trace the connections. There is little purity in publishing, but there are plenty of other places they could have gone without this kind of stigma: Random House, St. Martin's, Penguin, etc... If I was making a list of publishers to avoid, the top two would be HarperCollins and Perseus.
Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but why enrich the enemy? Surely they checked out who they were doing business with. This information is readily available. I just don't get it.
No disrespect to Rachel Maddow - I loved her when I got Air America and appreciate her new presence on MSNBC - but if the heads of the network aren't vetting the companies they work with, they won't be able to create the full spectrum left-wing media they envision.

Maddow Is a Media-Whore

Rachel Maddow is a media-whore like the rest of her ilk. I've watched her on Countdown over the last few months while she has mewed the corporate line in a distinctly deceptively different manner. (Being outspoken and "radical" establishes her niche in the conversation and ensures her a place in the dialogue.) Just because she's a lesbian, we're supposed to assume she's enlightened, right? Guess what? She's no dummy. She seeks the big dollars and cushy retirement plans that the oligarchs dole out to their water-carriers (i.e., Olbermann, Hannity, and O'Reilly,(sp?) etc.).

All, a bunch of twats, not withstanding.

Well, when we assume . . . . I'll end it here knowing that you get my drift.

You can listen to good, stimulating progressive radio all day every day - 24/7.

Take a look at this article to get the details on how.

Shows every sign of being the Barbara Walters of the new Millenium - I mean of course in the sense of being the primary female commentator and reporter on radio and TV.

I see by postings above I'm not the only straight guy that thinks she's a babe. You know what it is? You can SEE she is intelligent, very bright and witty with a killer smile and has a knockout gurgling laugh and (okay, this is gonna sound weird...) she looks as though she SMELLS good, too!

Anybody starting a "Straights For Rachel" website?

Has anyone ever heard of Rachel Maddow??

Finally, thankfully yes!! I have a big old civics geek crush on Rachel.

She is everything we could ask for; brilliant, witty, sharp with a backbone; not to mention very attractive. She has no problem standing up to that bigot Buchanan on MSNBC. It's so nice to see her star rising she has earned it.

Personally, I think Keith & Rachel have upped the ante in political dialogue one sees on the tee-vee machine. By virtue of their ability to cut through the rights talking points. We saw that last night during convention coverage; it even gave tweety some spine; he questioned a few remarks. (I suppose he's worried about being upstaged by KO & the lefty lesbian; too late)

To the comment that she sold out to corporate media for a retirement plan and money-what's wrong with wanting a little financial security? She certainly hasn't sold her soul and I do believe that with her new show starting next month we will see an improved, intelligent dialogue on the issues.

Brava, Rachel. Welcome to the big leagues-we've been waiting for you.

Rachel's great, but not the first

Rachel Maddow is a great progressive media talent, among the best. But she's not the FIRST Progressive media superstar.
Randi Rhodes has her beat on that score. Randi was named Talkers Magazine's 2007 Woman of the Year. However, Randi didn't toe the party line with Air America management. The Hillary Clinton episode was a front to break Randi's iron clad contract with Air America. So Randi left the network and very soon after came back to radio on the Nova M Network, where she is doing quite well.
This brings up another point: There are other progressive networks besides Air America and they and their talent need to be acknowledged.
So, I give Rachel her due, she is a great progressive on air talent. I enjoy her work every time I see or hear her on air. But so is Randi Rhodes, Ed Schultz, Stephanie Miller, Mike Malloy, and many others who are not on Air America. Rachel's not the first, but she is among the best.
