Thank God for the Winter Games -- those figure skaters are all super-manly men.

According to OutSports.com, of the 10,708 athletes at the Olympics this year, just 10 have identified themselves publicly as being gay. Of the 10, Australian diver Matthew Mitcham is the only male gay athlete.

Yesterday, Mitcham won the gold in the in the 10m platform diving event, scoring an upset over the Chinese team, which was heavily favored to win. But as Maggie Hendricks at Yahoo’s Olympics blog notes, NBC never mentioned Mitcham’s orientation:

NBC did not mention Mitcham’s orientation, nor did they show his family and partner who were in the stands. NBC has made athletes’ significant others a part of the coverage in the past, choosing to spotlight track athlete Sanya Richards’ fiancee, a love triangle between French and Italian swimmers and Kerri Walsh’s wedding ring debacle.

In his press interview after the event, however, Mitcham stood with both his mother and his partner, Lachlan, thanking them for the support they’ve provided. Watch it:

Mitcham first came out in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald on May 24. Mitcham said that they couldn’t afford for Lachlan to attend the games, so had applied for — and was awarded — a grant through the Johnson & Johnson Athlete Family Support Program to send him to Beijing.

According to the LA Times, the first thing Mitcham did when meeting with journalists after his win was “hug the reporter who handled the story with particular sensitivity.”

Digg!

Thanks for raising the "family" issue

I've been complaining all along in my blogs about the Olympics about the excessive coverage of some personal lives (beach volleyball women, in particular), and almost always showing/naming the American parents, while completely ignoring the fact that people from other countries (like the Chinese) have parents or families. Or even fans. How little we have seen the celebrations of fans from countries other than the States.

Your point is really important and I think it is worthwhile to complain to NBC about their appalling choices of whom and what to ignore.
Thanks again,
Sue Katz

...except for maybe other gays? Does it make them feel special or apart from society when someone comes out publicly or is showcased as being gay? Didn't mommy and daddy hug you enough when you were a kid that you need more attention than any other group of people?! Jumping jesus on a pogo stick - get a friggin life already! NOBODY CARES!

Really, I could care less about yours or anyone's sexual orientation. And neither do most people. Therefore, it's an irrelevant, trivial, waste of time to talk about. The only people who really care about this crap are the ones trying to shove it down everyone's throats by calling it 'awareness' or 'diversity' - even gays are offended by this type of propaganda.

Awareness-schmarness! The gay agenda is just as bad if not worse than those other loudmouth a-holes, the christian right.

Shut the f*ck up already and get on with your life.

Besides, what makes you think that NBC (or any media outlet) has any obligation to society to point out that someone is gay or straight? Maybe they should start making it a point to mention someone's eye color, hair color (there might be blind people listening in), the size of the woman's breasts or maybe even the dude's penis size. Here's how it would sound if networks were socially obligated to get really personal about an athlete: "So, how did you father all those children with a penis that is just 1 inch long? Well Marv, all I can tell you is that old saying is true: it doesn't matter the size, it's how you use it! Hey Marv, did you notice my wife's amazing 36C boobs? I sure did Tim, let's show them to the audience!"

If you want a media outlet that makes it point to mention everyone's sexuality during a broadcast, start your own network.

I am so sick of media making everyone's orientation, race, color, religion, a public huppla. Everytime this is done it ridicules the Creator! We are all made by Him/Her! So are you telling the Lord He/She made a mistake??? The pro-choice/anti-abortionists make it their business what comes from a woman's body, or whether she allows it to mature to delivery and then say "oh crap" it's gay, or it's deformed, PUUleeeaaazzzzze, mind your business.

Let's face facts: The greatest Olympic diver ever is a proud gay man! This kid is in good company if he succeeds like Greg, whether he is also gay or not.

Good on ya, mate!

Sexual Orientation...

is irrelevant to an athlete's performance. Would it have been useful to reveal that the 2 young American platform divers, David Boudain and the other guy are virgins (assuming the truth of that notion)? Is it possible that this piece was written by a gay guy who is pissed off at the "slight?"

Didn't watch any of the latest Olympic coverage. Can't stand the Olympics anymore. Totally comercialized plus far too many team sports. Whatever happened to Individual Athletic performances? Far too few.

how would they have handled it if he had been in contact sports such as wrestling?

It seems a given that a large number of FEMALE athletes in many disciplines are, if not gay then asexual, but remains unspoken.

Since a "sex angle" has been put into everything; politics, business and professional sport surely Olympics can't avoid it, too?

the writer spends time decrying the fact that the winning diver of the 10 meter platform competition didn't get any recognition of his "gayness." Would it therefore have been useful to inform the viewers of the Olympics that some of the athletes were "heterosexual?"

To Ms. Amanda Merkel: Who cares except maybe you?

Hmm you actually included a "press conference" video of a man standing beside his same-sex partner and kissing him, having won... and you say they censored his homosexuality? Is this satire? How do you think the gay community would have appreciated them singling out gay athletes? Could that have been tastefully enough done to not have offended?

From a network that broadcasts such puritanical trash like "To Catch a Predator" and which refuses advertising from condom manufacturers.

About the only thing worthwhile NBC has going for it is Jay Leno.
