A week ago I predicted that the majority of Maureen Dowd's thirty-three remaining columns to be published in the New York Times before the election, would not be helpful to Barack Obama. There have been two columns since then. On Saturday she mocked George W. Bush's trip to the Olympics. It was a hit on the right, but if she was aiming for McCain, she missed. Today, her column returns to the theme of last week: Democratic division and Hillary's treachery. So, after one week, the score is:

Columns helpful to Obama: 0
Columns helpful to McCain: 1
Columns helpful to no one: 1

In today's offering, Dowd has concocted a fantasy world, where John McCain and Hillary Clinton conspire together (with the inconsequential moral support of Jesse Jackson) to sink the candidacy of Barack Obama. It begins:

In the dead of night in a small hideaway office in the deserted Capitol, a clandestine meeting takes place between two senators with one goal.
They grin at each other as they lift their celebratory shots of brutally cold Stolichnaya.
"Our toast to The One," they say in unison, "is that he's toast."
"Obama should have picked you, Hillary," John McCain tells her. "It isn't fair, my friend. But it just makes it easier for me to whup him."
"Don't worry, John, I've put it behind me," Hillary replies. "I'm looking toward the future now, a future that looks very bright, once we send Twig Legs back to the back bench."
They chortle with delight.
Portraying Clinton as a Georgian gangster drinking 'brutally cold' Stolichnaya...very clever. Maureen Dowd, ladies and gentlemen, doing her part for the left.

The rest of the column is worse.

There have been plenty of painful missed opportunities, but as first years go, this isn't bad.
