McCain's 'Cone of Silence' Not So Quiet

McCain couldn't have cheated, could he?

Before the candidate forum at the Saddleback Church got underway on Saturday night, the Rev. Rick Warren explained that both candidates would get the exact same questions. Barack Obama would go first, and John McCain had been "safely placed ... in a cone of silence."

As it turns out, that's not quite right.

Members of the McCain campaign staff, who flew here Sunday from California, said Mr. McCain was in his motorcade on the way to the church as Mr. Obama was being interviewed by the Rev. Rick Warren, the author of the best-selling book "The Purpose Driven Life."
The matter is of interest because Mr. McCain, who followed Mr. Obama's hourlong appearance in the forum, was asked virtually the same questions as Mr. Obama. Mr. McCain's performance was well received, raising speculation among some viewers, especially supporters of Mr. Obama, that he was not as isolated during the Obama interview as Mr. Warren implied.
Nicolle Wallace, a spokeswoman for Mr. McCain, said on Sunday night that Mr. McCain had not heard the broadcast of the event while in his motorcade and heard none of the questions.
"The insinuation from the Obama campaign that John McCain, a former prisoner of war, cheated is outrageous," Ms. Wallace said.

Now, I have no idea if McCain heard any of the questions, or if anyone on his staff gave him a heads-up on what to expect. The McCain campaign hasn't exactly operated with a high level of integrity, but we'll probably never know for sure. The Obama campaign is reportedly "not pursuing" this and I doubt it's a "story" with legs.

That said, I can't help but notice that Nicolle Wallace, a veteran of Karl Rove's shop, responded to a question about this by reminding us that McCain is "a former prisoner of war."

I'm afraid the campaign took a right turn at embarrassing, and is headed straight for ridiculous.

To be sure, it's obvious that McCain's detention as a young man in Vietnam helped shape his life, and it's not unreasonable that he'd want voters to know about his experience.

But that's not a license to force the "P.O.W. card" into every unrelated question.

Last week, when the Rev. Kirbyjon Caldwell, a close Bush ally, publicly questioned McCain's character, the McCain campaign responded by highlighting McCain's background as a prisoner of war. When Dems attacked McCain's healthcare plan in May, McCain responded by noting his background as a prisoner of war. Asked by a local reporter about the first thing that comes to his mind when he thinks of Pittsburgh, McCain responded by talking about his background as a prisoner of war.

And all of this, of course, dovetails with the McCain campaign running multiple television ads talking about McCain's background as a prisoner of war, literally including interrogation footage in the commercial.

This hard-sell wouldn't be quite so odd if McCain didn't go around saying that he's reluctant to talk about his Vietnam experiences.

McCain became visibly angry when I asked him to explain how his Vietnam experience prepared him for the Presidency.
"Please," he said, recoiling back in his seat in distaste at the very question ... McCain then collected himself and apologized for his initial reaction.
"I kind of reacted the way I did because I have a reluctance to talk about my experiences," he said, noting that he has huge admiration for the "heroes" who served with him in the POW camp and said the experience taught him to love the U.S. because he missed it so much.
"I am always reluctant to talk about these things," McCain said.

McCain's service demands respect and the nation's gratitude. But he's clearly crossed the line into shameless exploitation.

Digg!

Try to sell that one to his first wife.

From article:
"That said, I can't help but notice that Nicolle Wallace, a veteran of Karl Rove's shop, responded to a question about this by reminding us that McCain is "a former prisoner of war.""

Next, they will try to stave off attacks on McCain by stating that "it's a new world after 9-11"!

I'm surprised they haven't used the 9-11 card any more than they have already, actually.

Let's see, they have used the "race-card" card. They have used the "Obama is acting too presidential" card, all the while simultaneously using the "Obama is inexperienced" card.
McCain's surrogates have used the "Obama is a Muslim" and the related "Obama is unAmerican" cards.

Don't forget the "Obama is an elitist" card, the related "Obama is a celebrity" card, and the odd "Obama is too good of a speaker" card.

They have used so many cards, I think we have found the other half of that deck McCain is playing with!

(I can't take this sh** any more!)

I received an email from a fairly prominent writer this morning praising the wartime exploits and experiences of McCain and stating he was the only one qualified to lead our Country. I replied, asking him to respond to the info posted on these websites.

http://unfitmccain.com/Donations.html
http://unfitmccain.com/Home_Page.html
http://www.vietnamveteransagainstjohnmccain.com/
http://unfitmccain.com/Mission.html

His answer was "Ok go vote for Obama. Brilliant. Vote for a 3rd party candidate, same as voting for Obama,"

Notice he did not or could not dispute this information.
Why aren't more people and/or the media talking about these things???

He uses P.O.W. like Guliani used 9/11 because it's ALL he has going for him. If he had to answer a single question straight up off the top of his head, he'd lose what's left of his mind.
How old are you? "I was a P.O.W.!"
Where do you stand on Social Security?
"I was a P.O.W.!"
Do you care about the troops killed in Iraq at ALL?
"Well they volunteered! And I was a P.O.W.!"
What will you do for the economy?
"I was a P.O.W.!"
Got the picture? How about asking him just exactly being a P.O.W. 30 some years ago has to do with anything that he's asked about today? What's the relevance?
He couldn't tell you if his LIFE depended on it. Oh, but he was a P.O.W.! Give him a break.

Mac didn't hear the broadcast but his Puppet masters did. He may not of heard the questions- but why bother when your 'pat 'answers are already written down for you.
Mac has repeatedly (stolen) Obama's lines and ideas. Of course with his memory, he probably doesn't recall that either.
Mac's follow up speech at the AIPAC(?) (Jewish Association))was nearly verbatium in many areas to Obamas. When it took him about 10 minutes to come out I knew his staff had been plagarizing whatever they could.
Obama has done Mac a favor by not humiliating him in a Townhall forum. Mac memory makes W. look Alert & oriented (Not any more intellegent- Just Alert & knows what his next line is- Of course he's only got about 5 to remeber anyway.."9/11, terrorists,Winning, stay the course and I think" (a disclaimer just before he tells a blatant LIE,Which "I think" is the first lie in the sentence)
Mac's ego will be his legacy's undoing. Should have taken his 'War hero'consellation prize & retired. He's lost face even to his own old supporters. Pathetic-"Better to burn out then fade away" Johnny boy (and your mind is fading, along with whatever integrity you may have actually possessed).
But hey Cheneycorp has now perfected election theft, so the Corps have nothing to be concerned about- hell he could drop over on stage and he'll still win with the Diebold machines
He like W, could never win a real election.

That the weasel McCain had prior knowledge of the questions. He's not articulate enough to come up with solid answers off the cuff.
Ever notice how he constantly blinks when he's talking publically? A typical body language reaction when someone is lying.
But not to worry. Obama will wipe the floor with mccain in the debates..

The over-reaction of the McCain camp to the Obama spin that McCain might have had some opportunity to overhear some of the previous responses seems to point towards their insecurity in how well McCain might have done in his responses to those questions.
From what I have heard of the forum, the likeliest interpretation a reasonable person might conclude from McCain's answers is that they were consistent with his Pittsburgh Steelers defensive line POW story - that he was giving false information, pandering to his audience, telling them what they wanted to hear, whether they were Vietnamese captors, Pittsburgh voters, people who let their religious leaders define their political agenda, or for that matter, a bunch of motorcycle riders getting ready for a drunken topless beauty contest.
Good thing John remembered he was talking in front of the anti-abortion crowd and not the motorcycle group. No wonder his team thought he performed better than Obama - they set the bar pretty low for John.

There is a second issue here that is being ignored. I have no idea if McCain was prepped (not true, I have an idea but an idea without a means of verification is just a rumor) but the question comes to mind as to what degree this whole thing was a set up, and if so, by whom. The minister stated clearly that McCain was back tucked away in a room in a cone of silence. Now we know, by his own staff's report, that he was in his motorcade on the way to the church as that statement was made to the audience. Was the minister deceived into believing that McCain was in fact where he could not hear the questions? Or, and I do hate to go here, but was the minister deceiving the crowd knowing that the statement that he made was false? I am not sure how important that any of this is. I really don't think that there is much danger of anyone confusing John McCain with anyone who thinks very deeply. But it certainly would be interesting, at least to me,to know who was responsible for the deception, and who was it intended to deceive, and why? Just a thought.

WHO THE HELL CARES???!!!!

At least the bald-headed, white-haired little bastard is still alive, much to the chagrin of the POWs who died or are STILL POWs, I'm sure!!!

If McSame did ANYTHING right, it was watching his Admiral daddy sweep McSame's path in politics and everything else throughout his life!
Give me a break!

...never been tortured myself, so I can't speak about confessions under duress, but why is the guy so down on getting the MIA's back here? If he was any kind of "hero" he'd want to take the rap and get on with life.

The man is, as far as seeing any kind of "big picture" other than what his Corporatist Fascist handlers want him to see, dumb as a fucking post. And his religious "values", whatever the hell they may be, are nothing more than a veneer for Corporatism.

Oh, and some anger issues....living proof the U.S military (or ANY military, really) doesn't give a rat's ass about the psychological damage it inflicts on its own, as well as innocent people. Sick bastards. Here's another link to read about evil:

.......that McBush is NOT a hero. He's a survivor, and perhaps weaker men might not have made it, but he did NOTHING that I know of to deserve the label of hero. A hero is someone who voluntarily places himself or herself in great danger to help others. McBush's war prisoner history is NOT a qualification for president, in fact it's almost a disqualifier, because the survivor tends to see everything in terms of military might.
