Group Headed by James Dobson Asks Christians to Pray for Rain at Obama Speech

Posted by Steve Benen, The Carpetbagger Report at 8:14 AM on August 13, 2008.

Stuart Shepard's video asked everyone to pray for God to smite Denver with "abundant rain, torrential rain ... flood-advisory rain."

As reported here over the weekend, James Dobson's Focus on the Family employs Stuart Shepard to make short, "clever" religious-right videos for the evangelical powerhouse. Shepard creates these videos regularly, and most of them are entirely forgettable.

Last week, however, Focus unveiled a new video, asking politically-conservative Christians to pray for rain on Aug. 28, in order to disrupt Barack Obama's speech at the Democratic National Convention.

Shepard called for "abundant rain, torrential rain ... flood-advisory rain." He adds, "I'm talking about umbrella-ain't-gonna-help-you rain ... swamp-the-intersections rain." Explaining why he wants everyone to pray for rain, Shepard explains, without a hint of humor, "I'm still pro-life, and I'm still in favor or marriage being between one man and one woman. And I would like the next president who will select justices for the next Supreme Court to agree."

In other words, Obama disagrees with the religious right on culture-war issues, so Focus on the Family wants God to smite Obama with rain. Got it.

Yesterday, some Colorado reporters picked up on this, last night, MSNBC's Keith Olbermann featured Shepard as the "worst person in the world," and today, Focus is a little humiliated. (via my friends at Right Wing Watch)

Focus on the Family Action pulled a video from its Web site today that asked people to pray for "rain of biblical proportions" during Barack Obama's Aug. 28 appearance at Invesco Field in Denver to accept the Democratic nomination for president.

Stuart Shepard, director of digital media at Focus Action, the political arm of Focus on the Family, said the video he wrote and starred in was meant to be "mildly humorous."

But complaints from about a dozen Focus members convinced the organization to pull the video, said Tom Minnery, Focus Action vice president of public policy.

"If people took it seriously, we regret it," Minnery said Monday.

Um, Tom? People took it seriously because Focus took it seriously.

I live in Denver. I say, if you want to pray for rain, then fine with me! As long as my lawn gets some of that rain! These last few years of climate-change-induced drought (exacerbated by Bush administration policies) have been murder on my grass.

Every time someone makes a wish, the wish comes true. McCain wished that Obama would go over to Afghanistan and Iraq to see for himself and he did --- and then McCain complained about the trip for the next four weeks because if was unfair to take away the press corps. The Clintons had similar experiences. Each time they raised a challenge, the challenge was met and they were ticked off about for days.

With any luck it will rain in the drought striken region, people will bless Obama with having brought much needed relief and then when he mounts the podium to speak, the clouds will part, the stars will shine and the world will be at peace. Or something to that effect. This has not been a good year for these folks and the future doesn't look much better.

... they want traffic-stopping, accident-causing, city-flooding rain. In other words, God has to paralyze the whole city in order to 'punish' the Democrats. I do not believe in God, but I know plenty of people who do and are simply revolted at the idea that Dobson and ilk have of God, a peevish, vindictive, tantrum-throwing being with no more wisdom than a 2-year old.

since the '80s.

Pink Floyd began their '94 US tour in near-hurricane conditions in Miami, and it didn't even slow them down. Hasn't this loser heard of wireless mics?

I phoned Leibermann's office this morning. Left a voice mail for him, told him I am "an older disabled independent voter in Washington State", not entirely untrue as I go after dems or repugs alike if it is necessary. I don't care just want them to do their jobs properly. ANYWAY, my voice got sort of shaky as I explained that I voted for him and Gore in 2000 and I really like him and admire him so much, and McCain too, like him but haven't made up my mind yet (God forgive me) and I am upset with this insinuation or suggestion that Obama is anti-american or even a traitor or doesn't love our country. I said I don't understand that and I don't think it is true and I just really wish they would stick to the issues so I can make up my mind because it is very upsetting! ;-) teehee...

You can leave a message for Liebermann by phoning:

And Dobson failed to snare me. We've seen how the mighty preachers have fallen, and if this one focuses on the family, one wonders which member of this family will be first to write a book. Be afraid, preacherfolk. Be extremely afraid.

It amazes me that these "preachers" apparently have never read the New Testament. That whole "camel through and eye of a needle" thing comes to mind. And "that which you do to the least of you you do to me." Or something like that. The poor? Give them school vouchers. The infirm? Health care is a widget. The elderly? Well, ok. But Social Security and Medicare aren't socialist because people like them.

Looks like the very Right Rev. James Dobson didn't get his wish for rain during Obama's speech. The weather in Denver is perfect and a hurrricane is headed towards New Orleans and might hit during the GOP convention. Does this mean God is a Democrat or does it mean that He doesn't pay any more attention to James Dobson than intelligent humans?
