Republican Lawmaker Wants Environmentalists to Know Jesus Has Already Saved the Planet

Posted by Steve Benen, The Carpetbagger Report at 5:01 PM on August 12, 2008.

If we're ranking the far-right lawmakers in a March-Madness-style bracket, to determine the craziest, Bachmann has to be a #1 seed, right?

For a few months, I've been corresponding with a friend and regular reader, "Zeitgeist," who insists that Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) is, without a doubt, the single craziest member of the House of Representatives. I usually respond by pointing to Rep. Michele Bachmann, the infamous Minnesota Republican.

Given recent events, King is really going to have to pick up his game -- because Bachmann keeps getting further and further out there.

House Republicans say Speaker Nancy Pelosi is playing politics at the expense of the American economy -- and taxpayers are suffering as a result.
House Republicans say they will continue their floor revolt over gas prices during the congressional recess until Nancy Pelosi allows an up-or-down vote on offshore oil drilling. Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (R-Minnesota) says she plans to return to Washington to join in the protest.
"[Pelosi] is committed to her global warming fanaticism to the point where she has said that she's just trying to save the planet. We all know that someone did that over 2,000 years ago, they saved the planet -- we didn't need Nancy Pelosi to do that," says Bachmann.

As Eric Kleefeld added, these latest comments are part of a trend: "Other recent Bachmannisms include the claim that there isn't actually any wildlife in the areas of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge where she wants more drilling, and the allegation Democrats want high gas prices so as to force people to move into 'inner cities' and 'the urban core.'"

If we're ranking the far-right lawmakers in a March-Madness-style bracket, to determine the absolute craziest, Bachmann has to be a #1 seed, right?

Bachmann is Insane

No question she has severe mental problems. It is quite sad and scary that America can produce such a whacked out lunatic. That is what hyper-religiosity will do.

...when people, who use any opportunity they can to shove more of their non-earth-based religions down our throats, have dwindled down to a delusional few.

As far as I know, current Christian attitude which is far from earth based and human first in its concerns, is supposed to prepare adherents for their after life, rendering them incapable of addressing earthly problems in a humane and realistic fashion.

When is that rapture anyway?

Not As Crazy As They Seem

I often think these people aren't as crazy as they appear. Right wing politicians, preachers and media personalities know that bizarre religious fanaticism or jingoism play well with their constituency. They're more cynical than crazy.

Consider George Bush. He has never attended a church at the level of most fundamentalists, nor tithed. His religiosity is contrived, I am convinced. Limbaugh, Coulter and others constantly push the envelope for publicity and ratings, too.

Did I miss something in the gospel about Jesus saving the planet? So planet earth sinned when Adam fell and Jesus was the sacrifice to redeem us all, earth too? Seems like the storyline of that particularly weird myth has been altered somewhat. The rapture can't come soon enough.

The Earth was perfect before the fall

Man was perfect and so was the Earth. The fall of man ruined the Earth for us as well as our souls.

It's just another example of someone without much common sense who is very vulnerable to whatever propaganda he or she hears. These are the type of people that the right wing corporatists and religious fundamentalists thrive on.

Some of these people, like Dick Cheney, are the sociopathic leaders who spew the propaganda. Most of the others are the ignorant followers, like George Bush, who are too shallow to do anything but believe what they are told by the propagandists.

Sounds O.K. to me...as long as I can also believe that Jesus redeemed me from all my sins, so I can go out and steal and screw and do anything I want.

Denial is a strong condition

The most addictive behavior in the world: denial. People will cling to their beliefs until the water is lapping at their doorsteps, and even then they won't believe it.

The first cases of denial on record: the residents of Noah's village. They thought Noah was the nut and without a doubt, they considered it impossible that anything was going to go wrong.

And, here we are again, full circle. The nuts are laughing. This time however, their stupidity is going to sink us all, because they have infected the leadership ranks thanks to the nutty voters who put them in.

Thanks alot.

Why would anyone take this woman seriously? There's no WILDLIFE in the Arctic National WILDLIFE Refuge? I suppose they named it thusly simply out of lack of a better name.

I give up. Every day, I realize that my emigration to Canada was the best move I could have made when I did it.
