Mainstream Media Nepotism: Luke Russert Scores Sweet Deal with NBC

Isn't it bad enough that we can't escape from political dynasties, do we have to set them up in the media too?

Look, I have no beef against Luke Russert.

Amidst all the hue and cry and rending of garments and the week-long grief-fest that took place on all three networks after Tim Russert's sudden death, it was Russert's own son, one of a very few people who had a blood-born right to be curled up in a fetal position in the corner, who managed to pull himself together and conduct himself with class and dignity when people three times his age were blubbering like infants on national television for a full week.

But isn't there something just a little bit wrong when there are no doubt thousands of kids who are "A" students in their journalism majors who are going to be toiling away covering council meetings in Anytown, USA for the next five years trying to get some actual experience, and this guy gets a TV correspondent gig on a national network based on who his dad was -- especially when Rachel Maddow is out there suffering the indignity of having to parry crap from the likes of Pat Buchanan night after night?

Again, this is no knock on young Mr. Russert, who is at least saying the right humble-type things:

Russert told MSNBC.com that he realizes some might say it was only his name that got him the job. But he's ready for the challenge and plans to work hard, he said.

"I'm not trying to be my father. He's irreplaceable. I'm simply trying to do something that I think there's a real niche for, that there's a calling for, that has to do with youth, not just in the election but in politics from now on," Russert said.

In a statement, he said he was "humbled and grateful" for the opportunity.

Still, isn't it bad enough that we can't escape from political dynasties, do we have to set them up in the media too? Have we learned nothing from the Hack That Is Chris Wallace?

I understand the critiques launched by Paul Krugman, John Conyers and others -- but I think Gupta is an inspired choice.

Tim Russert was a tool.

He wasn't daring, he wasn't cutting edge and he was chickenshit. Give me Bill Moyers, Jim Lehrer, Hell give me Jon Stewart and Colbert before these "pundit" weenies. So his son gets to be a millionaire because daddy was a talking head. BFD.

Desperate Times For Desperate Networks...

The highest rated show on MSNBC gets about the same ratings as the most popular local newscast in NYC or LA. In a nation of 300 million.

Just putting it into perspective.

Luke Russert Knocking Out Rachel Maddow

What is WRONG with this picture? Luke Russert seems like a sweet, smart and articulate young man--but no more so than my grand nephews who are roughly the same age and with, actually, much better credentials and experience! But Rachel Maddow is a pro and the best political commentator we have had for years! To have her replaced by a nice young man who is there because he is the son of the great icon, Tim Russert, is waaaay beyond unfair. It is STUPID! Let young Luke parry with cranky old Pat Buchanan. That would be the young having at the old--sort of an Obama/McCain matchup. And release Rachel to show us her brilliance at what she does the best! Please!!!

Luke Russert, Andrea Koppel . .

Tim Russert made 5 million dollars a year.

His son will do very well for himself. Ted Koppel's daughter landed in the MSM fresh out of college. Some people are more "entitled" than others.

Couldn't agree more that accidents of birth shouldn't preclude these "journalists" from having to cut their teeth on foolish blowhards like Buchanan. But it won't happen.

Just so long as we recognize (and ignore) inane bullshit, and use the mute button accodingly. . .

Privilege? Affirmative Action?

Luke Russert is certainly a case of reverse Affirmative Action. He gets to bump off one of the most intelligent, well-spoken journalists just because of who his father was. Frankly, I had little respect for Tim Russert when he showed himself to be a dyed-in- the-wool right winger. Luke will be well-schooled in just what to say to satisfy the conservative, neocon bunch just as his father was.

When black folks are asked; why they haven't accomplished more since the last forty years of being able to vote, the case of Luke Russert tells us why. He is receiving preferential, privileged treatment. When has anyone ever heard of a young black man being lifted to such a level of success without doing anymore than speaking emotionally at his father's funeral? Never, that's when...
