Iran Calls Bush's Bluff

Posted by Steven D., Booman Tribune at 10:00 AM on July 21, 2008.

Talks with Iran about its nuclear program fail. Which isn't a surprise, given that the U.S. "senior diplomatic official" didn't speak.

Talks with Iran over its nuclear program end in resolving nothing even after the Bush administration sent a "senior diplomatic official" to attend (but not speak). I'm shocked, shocked I tell you, that the mere presence of a Bushie at this diplomatic conference didn't force Iran to its knees begging for forgiveness for ever offending the mighty United States:

The presence of William J. Burns, the under secretary of state for political affairs, was one of the most important encounters between Iran and the United States since relations were severed nearly three decades ago. And it was part of a rare show of unity among the six negotiating partners -- the United States, France, Britain, Germany, Russia and China -- who pressed Iran to accept compromise.

But Iran responded with a written document that failed to address the main issue: international demands that it stop enriching uranium. And Iranian diplomats reiterated before the talks that they considered the issue nonnegotiable.

Specifically, the world powers wanted Iran to accept a formula known as "freeze-for-freeze" to break the deadlock. Under the formula, Iran would not add to its nuclear program, and the United States and other powers would not seek new international sanctions for six weeks to pave the way for formal negotiations. The proposal was originally offered to Iran last year and presented again to it last month as part of a new proposal to ultimately give Iran economic and political incentives if it stops producing enriched uranium.

We're in a poker game, ladies and gentlemen, and Iran just called Bush's bluff. Now one of three things can happen: Bush can fold and agree to serious talks without pre-conditions, which would be advisable. Or he can continue bluffing, pretending that "terrible things" will happen should Iran not come to its senses, but leaving this issue for the next President to handle. Or he can choose Option No, 3. You know the one I mean, the one that's never, ever off the table.

So what do you think he'll decide to do? Number 1 is highly unlikely given past performance by this gang of front men for war profiteers. No. 2 is the best hope, even if it does raise the price of crude oil for the benefit of certain foreign nations and multinational companies. Number 3? Well, you tell me. Is Bush dumb enough or crazy enough to start another war?

Sorry, no need to answer that last question.

Glad you said, "Never mind don't answer that.", because we all know that the MURDERER DOES THINGS ACTING AS THE GREAT PROVOCATEUR for his only hope is to bluff, he wants WWIII, our 51st State needs this.
This is from the sublime to the ridiculous, a Diplomat that does not have a discourse that provides a peaceful solution??? WTF, the MURDERER only did this to piss off the Persians.

Iran isn't a threat to us so why bother other than trying to keep low level spying via satelite and communications. We can keep an eye on them. Better yet lets go build them a nuclear power plant and charge them oil as payment. Talks are a very real and good option, a war will be a very nasty adventure in more ways than one.

That recent missile test by Iran was a very specific threat. Not only does Iran have the capability to hit U.S. bases in Iraq, it also could shut the Straight of Hormuz and sink any of our ships that got within 200 km of their coast. The higher ups in the U.S. military must be munching Tums thinking about a U.S. attack on Iran.

Chess Game may be more accurate...

Iran's Pawns:

-Shiite sympathizers throughout ME and beyond;
-Legal Compliance under the IAEA;
-History of Non-Aggression;
-Former Ally in the War on Terror, offered to get OBL for the US
-International Friends/Relations across the globe
-Official Recipient of US Nuclear Technology
-ZERO dirt regarding Iraq Intervention
-Popularly Elected President

Iran's Knights:

-Smart ME Intelligence
-Firm Grasp of Western World Finance

Iran's Bishops:

-International Currency/Trade Leverage
-ZERO ME Enemies that are Non-Israeli/US/UK

Iran's Rooks:

-Oil Flow Straight of Hormuz
-Oil Flow OPEC

Iran's Queen:

Russia; Intelligence, Nukes, Security Agreements, UN SC VETO

The US' board:

-Divided, Confused, Misled, Aggressor-Nation on a massive international down-slide in performance and role in the world with only its Insane NeoConnected War Criminals trying to get away from ICC Criminal Trials, waning influence among the the real elites, and a super-heavy dependency on dinosaur-oil supply.

-The US Queen is the US military... that will only further eliminate any civility shown to us during the past 8 years making us Americans who are alive today the first generation of Americans to ever EARN the Hatred of the World.

You tell me who wins.

Who among us that has ever sat down to a game of checkers with a six-year-old, didn't see THIS coming?

A week ago, the administration announces that it is sending a diplomatic mission to talk to Iran.

The propaganda press hails this as a bold, decisive move, and the rest of us allow as it seems like a positive step, entirely antithetical to Bush's usual modus operandi.

And, within minutes of the actual meeting itself, the headlines come out: "talks with Iran deadlocked". In other words, they took a bathroom break, and hadn't actually discussed anything yet.

Today, Condi declares that the Iranians "aren't serious" at the negotiating table...which of course means that they're not simply capitulating on every point.

So why have this charade? It was clearly never meant to produce anything substantive...except the "exhaustive efforts at diplomacy have failed" headline.

Obama sure is making alot of people nervous.The so called reasons for going to war are becoming so transparent and the lies are no longer in question. E-mails to the wrong people? That was interesting. Maybe the law of unintended consequences is working to our advantage for a change. I hope the trip continues to go well. It's not a popularity contest but it helps to be liked, and he is. Thanks, ANNA

...Democrats are generally smarter than Repugs, and not so thuggish. But they're mired in the Enlightenment thinking of REASON, while Repugs just prefer to kill to get the job done. I'm afraid they'll kill him, and then it will be 1942 NGT (Nazi Germany Time) in Amerika. Our Stalingrad is the war for oil, and the current crop of Corporatists are every bit as nihilistic as Adolph's Boyz were...the will destroy everything to save themselves, and if they can't save themselves, then they'll take it all down if they can. Hopefully we'll have an Albert Speer to save our material heritage.
