As Long As We're Talking About Michelle Obama, Did You Know That Cindy McCain Was a Drug Addict?

Posted by Stephen Elliott, Huffington Post at 10:00 AM on June 20, 2008.

Could you imagine how mainstream media would be portraying Mrs. Obama if she had Mrs. McCain's past?

It's a psychedelic experience this week, watching Cindy McCain out on the campaign trail, attacking the opponent's wife. In rally after rally she says, "I've always been proud of my country," a not so subtle jab at Michelle Obama's gaffe earlier about really being proud of America for the first time.

But Cindy McCain has one hell of a scandal in her past. In the mid-nineties she was addicted to prescription pain killers. Worse, she was stealing the drugs from the American Voluntary Medical Team, a third world relief organization she founded. Like most ridiculously rich people, she didn't have to go to jail for her crimes and was allowed to enter a rehab program rather than face criminal charges. The charity was shut down.

So when Cindy McCain says, "All I know is that I've always been proud of my country," take it with a grain of salt. She spent at least three years stoned out of her mind. It's impossible to know what she thought during that time. Was she really proud, or was she just hallucinating?

Cindy's addiction has been virtually ignored this election season. As a thought experiment, try to imagine what the reaction would be if Michelle Obama had a history with drug addiction? If Michelle Obama had stolen drugs meant for third world countries to support her own addiction?

Of course, we want to leave spouses out of politics. But if Cindy is out attacking Michelle people are going to start throwing rocks back at her glass house. She'd have to be high to think otherwise.

Some stories about Cindy's drug addiction:

Although I argree that Ms McCain attacked ms Obama, I think ms Obama has enough power to use appropriate arguments why she said that she was never proud of the US, including that those sentiments are probably based on short time lines instead of her whole life and it should be considered by what this administration did to abuse 9-11 to invade Iraq etc. Also, we vote for mr McCain or Obama, not their spouses, no matter how salient it is to look into their past and attack them on whatever ground. Finally, if ms McCain refers directly to ms Obama in stating she is proud it is not an attack at a more personal level as this article tries to do. I think this thread should be retracted because it clearly violates what Obama asked us: not to attack family members!

Thanks

If she can get McBush onto some heavy meds maybe he'll stop singing "Bomb, bomb, bomb, Bomb bomb Iran"

Of course it's off limits but the point that if it has been Michelle (ma belle) instead of Barbie Doll McBush, Hannity, O'Reilly and Limbaugh would have been frothing at the mouth over it is valid.

THE STORY ACCORDING TO CINDY MCCAIN

She was on 60 Minutes a few years ago and told the story herself. Originally she had a back injury but continued taking the stuff long after she needed it. She worked overseas with a childrens charity and was in charge of ordering medication. She took her stash off the top, admitted it and was able to give it up. She doesn't deserve a medal but it's not a secret. I think they wanted out of the way before the 2000 eleciton. Thanks,ANNA

Pride in Country?

Why does it matter if anyone is proud or how proud they are of the US? What are we? A bunch of 3-year-olds?

For my money, this excessive pride is encouraged so when multinationals need the country to do something murderous, or the topic of racism/sexism comes up, people can hide behind patriotism. If you have another idea, I'd be glad to hear it. I'm tired of the stupidity that people should be proud of the the govt of a land mass made up of imaginary boundaries.

Pain killers, antidepressants, sleeping pills, soporifics, etc. are not anti-american. They make you a good American. Ask any shrink.

The Media covering Michelle Obama & Cindy McCain

If it weren't so frustrating, one could find some amusement (very little, I might add) in the fact how the pundits while blasting the "unimportance" of the Michelle remark and the dust-up caused by Cindy McCain, they go on and on and on. For two nights Dan Abrams of MSNBC, has spent at least half of his program going over and over and over this issue about these two women. Gads, I wish they spent as much time talking about the FISA Bill as they have on what Michelle wore on the View and what Cindy McCain said about pride in her country.

Thank Gawd for the Internet. What would we all do without you.....

Not a surprise - she's looked drunk a few times on the campaign trail- nonexistence Eyes, when sunglasses weren't covering them and a few staggers. Of course if you drink white Wine- no matter how much or how often You Can't be an alcoholic right?
Of course that can happen when you are caring for a debilitated Stroke/alzheimers patient like Mac. At the very least a good drunk on to numb the effects of your conscience as he lies to the Nation, that built the company which all your wealth came from.
I'd have to be Stoned or drugged out of my mind too if I had to be seen with Mac and his entourage- Organized Crime Syndicate.

Nobody goes to jail for first offense misdemeanors. And nobody gets jail time for petty theft, rich or poor, unless they've got a record a mile long.

On another level, it is, as state, absolutely pertinent that Michelle Obama is getting the griddle and Cindy McCain is getting a bye. Is it race? (OMG, if MO had done drugs, imagine the clatter!) Is it ideology? Is it a press/media that is without a baseline level of professionalism/intelligence/honor?

Yep; it sure is.

Imagine if Michelle Obama had a drug problem and stole drugs to feed her addiction.

Imagine, as well, that Michelle Obama's father was a convicted felon who served time and, for allegedly taking the fall, was awarded a beer distributorship, the money from which allowed Barack to enter politics.

Rash Limbaugh is probably proud of Ms. McCain's ability to find free illegal drugs whereas he had to pay for his.

Presidential candidate's wife---addict

Is it necessary to do such name calling during an election. There is some rough assertions out there about Ms/Obama. If they were said, many would say that they were racist assertions.

do you think would have happened if Mrs. Obama had a drug past? Heck, Senator Obama probably would have been shunned into not running. Let's be real and not pick and choose when things are off limits.
