Corporate Executives Pressured Journalists on Iraq

Bill Moyers had a PBS special last year called, “Buying the War,” which included all kinds of fascinating insights on the journalistic malpractice at the nation’s major news outlets leading up to the war in Iraq. Most notably, Moyers pressed Walter Isaacson, former chairman and CEO of CNN, to explain what transpired. Isaacson noted there was “almost a patriotism police” after 9/11 and when the network showed civilian casualties it would get phone calls: “Big people in corporations were calling up and saying, ‘You’re being anti-American here.’”

The notion that corporate executives would lean on the executives at news networks was more than a little disconcerting. But it’s just as important to realize that journalists were also under pressure to deliberately sell the public a bill of goods.

Last night, CNN congressional correspondent Jessica Yellin made a startling concession on the air.

It’s not every day that a broadcast journalist at a major network acknowledges for a national audience that she was “under enormous pressure from corporate executives,” who later edited her pieces and pushed her in specific pro-war directions.

This is, by any measure, no small admission.

For those who can’t watch clips online, here’s the transcript of the relevant portion:

COOPER: Jessica, McClellan took press to task for not upholding their reputation. He writes: “The National Press Corps was probably too deferential to the White House and to the administration in regard to the most important decision facing the nation during my years in Washington, the choice over whether to go to war in Iraq. The ‘liberal media’ — in quotes — didn’t live up to its reputation. If it had, the country would have been better served.”

Dan Bartlett, former Bush adviser, called the allegation “total crap.” What is your take? Did the press corps drop the ball?

YELLIN: I wouldn’t go that far.

I think the press corps dropped the ball at the beginning. When the lead-up to the war began, the press corps was under enormous pressure from corporate executives, frankly, to make sure that this was a war that was presented in a way that was consistent with the patriotic fever in the nation and the president’s high approval ratings.

And my own experience at the White House was that, the higher the president’s approval ratings, the more pressure I had from news executives — and I was not at this network at the time — but the more pressure I had from news executives to put on positive stories about the president.

I think, over time…

COOPER: You had pressure from news executives to put on positive stories about the president?

YELLIN: Not in that exact — they wouldn’t say it in that way, but they would edit my pieces. They would push me in different directions. They would turn down stories that were more critical and try to put on pieces that were more positive, yes. That was my experience.

At the risk of sounding demanding, maybe someone could do a little follow-up with Yellin? Like, for example, asking her to offer a few more details about corporate executives pressuring her to “put on positive stories about the president”?

She noted that she wasn’t with CNN at the time. According to her Wiki page, Yellin worked for MSNBC before becoming a White House correspondent for ABC News.

Which of these networks intentionally edited broadcast pieces to favor Bush? Which turned down stories critical of the administration?

And how many of the executives involved with such behavior are still working at the networks today?

After 9-11, when the president's approval rating hit all-time highs (Why? I don't know), my internal fascism-meter was going full-buzz. (I even put up little stickers around town with a red, black, and blue American flag and the words "United we goose-step". Some good doing that did!)

It was evident to ME, if not to the woman who yelled "Remember 9-11!" at our very small group of Iraq war protesters, that the media was feeding us bull.

Maybe things aren't as bad now as they were then in regards to the propaganda. (That is not saying much about now.) Maybe. But I don't know, since I don't watch the network news anymore.

I definitely have lost all trust in the mainstream media because of the post 9-11 mentality it exhibited. That trust will never come back, especially with the run-up to war with Iran (and with whomever else the Bush administration and the press will try to sell the idea of having a war with).
I think I am MORE informed as a result.

With all of the talk then and now about Bushs high approval ratings and leadership after 9/11, people need to be reminded that after the initial attack when he was hiding out who knows where, it took him THREE days to get his sorry ass to New York to view the destruction.
Compare this with the attacks on the London subway system when Tony Blair left a meeting in Scotland and flew back to London the very same morning of the attacks. And do we all remember the picture of Bush flying over New Orleans with his dumb expression looking out of an airplane window after Katrina?

I am so sick of everyone pawning off this shit on someone else. D@^N act as a responsible adult and give TRUTH! I would so respect anyone that would do that. At least the ivaw did that.
Helen Thomas was hitting hard throughout in her front row seat in the Press Room! Only journalist worth their salt.
The Murderer in Chief yesterday while addressing the graduates at the Air Force Academy said, "Now with our development of greater technology we have the ability to fight more HUMANE WARS." WTF, a HUMANE WAR?????

I don't buy this story. We live in a free society, with the most freedom of media in anywhere in the world.

Next you'll be telling us that Iraq was started to steal oil resources and to increase Exxon's profits.

Murdock is such a P.O. S. he realizes that his 'Brand ' of media is circling the Drain- so he has thrown out his first deceptive comment. thinks the Dems' will win by a Landslide in Nov. Now watch how many more anti Bush /Cheney/ War/ Corp Criminal peices begin to emerge- of course not too fast or too obvious- he's only hedging his Bet Now. Your Greed will Now cost YouDearly- not just financially but legally- Treasonous Propaganda, Undermining the 'Free Press'. You will go down in history as one of the first US propagandaist to be convicted of High Crimes! But take Heart You won't be Alone.
We are WAtching an dWe have noticed, the 'off button' being hit..Commentators only able to squeak out the slightest bit of truth, but held back from finishing the Thought. Case in Point Rachel Maddow discussing Hagee/Mac implication... Only could whisper once 'national security issue'... should have used THREAT and been able to finish that logical Progession of Thought. but it was obvious the invisible gag was applied.
Funny too how now we are getting the 'Look at Obama's New Pastor' BS, While Hagee & parsley's actual devious intentions are still only a passing comment, At Best!
Thank God for the Internet- So Far!

Where were the Journalists?

I was truly astonished at David Gregory's (for whom I have alsways had nothing but deep respect) statement that journalists were casting inquiries into the absurd neocon claims being made in the leadup to the U.S. occupation of Iraq. I paid very close attention then as now and do not recall a single time when I noted any kind of deep questioning by any journalist. I often asked friends where were the journalists and wehter I being just a bit overly cynical in forming my own questions on reflecting that no one else appeared to be wondering the same.

are cutting the world (it's peoples) up into bite size pieces for one last binge and purge fest.

Stand and FIGHT! Educate, organize, mobolize and make youselves chunky. Become too tough to chew and too big to swallow. Starve the beast.

It will be whatever WE call it, once we get it real clear that they ain't us and we ain't them. They've never liked us. We must kick our enabling addiction and stop loving them and their little get high stuff. Both sacred and secular.

WE outnumber them greatly.
It will be whatever "WE" call it.

Criminal Conspiracy and Complicity to Commit Treason Charges!
Posted by: Bearzerker on Jun 1, 2008 2:33 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I would like to see criminal conspiracy and complicity to commit treason charges
leveled at all the top executives of the Corporate controlled MSM,
and be taken immediately!

Why?
... because they took pages directly from Joseph Goebbels play book;
1.)by assisting in the subversion of truth, in order to lead us into war.
2.)support in diverting TRILLIONS of taxpayers dollars and by profiting in this action.
3.)by supporting GRAFT, GREED & CORRUPTION
3.)material and emotional support of illegal detention and torture, plus condoning these activities including against their own [eg. competitors reporters photographers etc.]
4.)and by providing material and logistical Intelligence and Support contrary to existing conventions knowing that this will effect future war correspondents ability to perform their duties.

and all this was done for one reason... for the bottom line! ...PROFIT!...

But what really pisses me off is,
how the corporate executives running this dog and pony show made it look so ...[sl]easy...
SOMETHING/ANYTHING... MUST BE DONE!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
'Joseph Goebbels' Quotes;
"If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The
lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State."
"It is the absolute right of the State to supervise the formation of public opinion."
"During a war, news should be given out for instruction rather than information."
"The most brilliant propagandist technique will yield no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly - it must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

We must ensure a quality control mechanism to
eliminate Propaganda emanating from government agencies.
This can easily be done by revoking broadcasting rights to broadcast News information. News should never be infotainment trivialized for the bottom line, news reporting is a serious business and should be classified as such by being a privilege to broadcast... that being by issuing licenses that is separate from their regular broadcast licenses!

Simply put... a broadcast license fee structure should be reviewed yearly and with bottom line penalties for corporate structures that do not have regulated news coverage, rewarding those that do have licensed news reporting by being exempt from the yearly somberquete.

News licensing guidelines must be enforced to ensure non-governmental interference in the future, their-fore the licensing body MUST BE non-political.
[Don't need a repeat of Colin Powell's son issuing broadcast licenses now do we, never forget that]
To much damage has been brought through the corporate streamlining of news and information sources to our societies detriment, action is needed now.
Crimes have been perpetrated by and through this medium, and the sheeple "DO" care!

to all the Patrick Fitzgeralds out there... where are you?
now... right NOW... is your time!
