Posted by Amanda Terkel, Think Progress at 5:59 AM on May 23, 2008.

McCain is trying to quell his own pastor problems.

In February, Ohio televangelist Rev. Rod Parsley endorsed Sen. John McCain (R-AZ). McCain called Parsley — who once said Allah was a “demon spirit” — his “spiritual guide.” In an interview with the AP today, McCain finally said that he rejected Parsley’s support:

I believe there is no place for that kind of dialogue in America, and I believe that even though he endorsed me, and I didn’t endorse him, the fact is that I repudiate such talk, and I reject his endorsement.

Watch a Brave New Films video highlighting the relationship between McCain and Parsley:

McCain’s statement on Parsley came after the senator earlier in the day rejected the endorsement of radical pastor John Hagee.

I watch this Greenwald film earlier, and thought "Wow, this is way worse than Rev. Wright." I even commented to the fact that there would probably be very few hardcore rightists in the US for whom news of this pastor would be an alienating factor. If anything, I supposed, it would further endear McCain to the far right.

But now that McCain has unequivocally repudiated this pastor (and Hagee) then why post this video again? How does this give AlterNet anymore integrity than when FOXNews runs the Jeremiah Wright "God Damn America" speech every hour on the hour, even well after Obama has distanced himself?

I am happy that McCain now FINALLY has rejected Hagee's and Parsley's support. But why, then, did McCain not only accept Hagee's support, but actively sought out Hagee's support when Hagee was saying that the US should preemptively nuke Iran in order to bring about Christ's Second Coming?
Hagee has also said some terrible things about gays and some extremely insensitive things about Hurricane Katrina and New Orleans. But we only hear in the mainstream media about what Hagee said about Catholics and now Jews. And McCain only distances himself from Hagee after the comments about Jews comes to light.
And the same goes for Parsley. Why didn't McCain reject his support from the beginning, instead of actively seeking out Parsley's support as McCain had done?
Only now, when Big Media FINALLY shines a light on McCain's "spiritual guides" does McCain suddenly care about what they had once said.
Seems like McCain didn't really ever care about what the pastors said, or he even totally agrees with them.
Now, that is scary!

repudiating someone only when it is impossible to avoid the subject doesn't mean much to me. wink ,wink
