Webb GI Bill Passes in Senate

Posted by Ali Frick, Think Progress at 10:59 AM on May 22, 2008.

Despite some Republican political shenanigans, Jim Webb's GI Bill passed the senate with overwhelming support.

Just over an hour ago, the Senate voted overwhelmingly — a veto-proof 75-22 — to approve Sen. Jim Webb’s (D-VA) 21st Century GI Bill, which would expand educational benefits for veterans who joined the service after Sept. 11, 2001.

Before the vote, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), who introduced his own watered-down, paltry version of the GI bill, exhorted President Bush to veto the measure, as he has indicated he will. Graham also insisted that his Republican colleagues would “get rewarded in the next election” if they vote against GI benefits:

This is a defining moment for the Senate, for the Republicans, and this war. I can tell you if we leave the generals alone and support our troops, they will win this war. And to my Republican colleagues, if we’ll stand firm for a fair procedure and a sensible solution to the veterans’ problems, we will get rewarded in the next election, not punished. If we give into this, we don’t deserve to be here.

It’s an odd proposition. A recent poll documented Americans’ overwhelming support for dramatically increased educational benefits of the kind Webb’s bill provides:

- 81 percent of Americans say that veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan are not getting enough support in transitioning back to civilian life.

- 91 percent of Americans support providing these veterans with a funded college education for their service.

- More than 8 of 10 Americans support a comprehensive 21st Century GI Bill.

- 83 percent of Americans believe that a new 21st Century GI Bill will benefit America.

Graham claimed today, “If we just leave the generals alone and support the troops, they will win this war.” But the nation’s most respected veterans organizations are joining average veterans to clamor for this bill. Just yesterday, the national commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars joined the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans Association and the American Legion in support of the bill.

As Webb said last Sunday, “The Republican party is on the block here, to clearly demonstrate that they value military service or suffer the consequences of losing the support of people who’ve served.” Citing Orwellian “support” for the troops, Graham appears willing to sell them out for partisan gain.

Update:

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), who frequently touts his devotion to his fellow veterans, skipped the vote today to hold a swanky fundraiser in California. By contrast, both Sens. Barack Obama (D-IL) and Hillary Clinton (D-NY) spoke on the floor in favor of the bill before voting for it.

I hope people in the Virginia districts supposedly represented by Congressmen Cantor and Forbes will ask them why they could not support this modern G.I. Bill, and will remember this slap to the veterans' faces during the election in November.

Including the gigantic slap in the face of Bush &Co. I sure hope they are right about retention. I hope that soon enough they will have no one to send to Iraq, and they'll have to go fight for 'freedom' themselves, or send their kids. I hope so-but won't hold my breath.

I served 26 months before I honorably separated from the Air Force from 04 to 06.

This new GI Bill says it applies to anyone that served "3 to 36 months" and my reading of it indicates that I do qualify.

That's good, because I don't qualify for the current GI Bill that I paid into.

Graham Is Right

Graham is right; they don't deserve to be there. They have no problem finding money to kill civilians, mostly women and children, in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere around the world, yet after getting over 4,000 of America's young men and women killed in an illegal war based on a master plan of deceit, they show their gratitude by denying them the only chance most of them will ever have at achieving the American dream.

THE RULES ACCORDING TO GEORGE BUSH

A soldier gets paid to fight the war, not to malinger in a hospital or sit in a classroom. Bush is nothing more than a mean SOB with no regard for human life. It's appaling that there are those who agree with him. McCain is beneath contempt. He has lived his life on the taxpayers money. And then married money. When people who set the standard have none of their own, this is what we get. Thanks, ANNA

When is Lindsey Graham up for re-election?

Oh, this was rich!

"And to my Republican colleagues, if we’ll stand firm for a fair procedure and a sensible solution to the veterans’ problems, we will get rewarded in the next election, not punished. If we give into this, we don’t deserve to be here..."

Rewarded in the next election? Sometimes we get the opportunity to hear the truth slip out from between the lies, and this is one of those times. The only thing they care about is their own re-election, and could really give a rat's ass about giving the returning vets a fair chance at a decent life after managing to survive a deployment in the war zones of Iraq or Afghanistan.

Do these people EVER put their money where their mouths are?

Well, he got one other thing right... "we don't deserve to be here."

And about that "next war" Senator Graham refers to.. just when and where does he have in mind? If we want to retain our troops then pay them more! Give them better benefits, not limit them! Make it a career choice not a "dead end"!
