Biden Blasts McCain on Iran Mistakes

Posted by Ali Frick, Think Progress at 10:01 AM on May 21, 2008.

Sen. Biden blasted John McCain for his lack of knowledge on Iran and his low regard of the American people.

Blasting Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) in a speech Monday, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said negotiating with Iran would make President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad “unlikely to abandon the dangerous ambitions that will have given him a prominent role on the world stage.” When Time’s Joe Klein pointed out that Ayatollah Kahmenei and the National Security Council — not Ahmadinejad — set Iranian foreign policy, McCain dismissed the important distinction, arguing that “any average American” thought of Ahmadinejad as the Iranian leader, and so he would, too.

Speaking with ThinkProgress yesterday afternoon, Sen. Joe Biden (D-DE) blasted McCain for his “overwhelming lack of sophistication” when it comes to foreign policy, and said McCain, as a presidential candidate, should know more than “average Americans” when it comes to Iran:

I just think that it’s a reflection. I don’t want an average American as president. I have great respect for average — average Americans don’t want an average American president of the United States of America. I want someone above average. I want someone who knows what they’re dealing with. And it surprises me that John didn’t understand the complexities of the power struggle going on in Iran right now.

Watch it.

Biden argued the U.S. should exploit the rift in the Iranian leadership between Ahmadinejad and the theocracy, saying “a sophisticated foreign policy” would “take advantage of that division.”

McCain likes to claim that he has “the most experience” when it comes to foreign policy. But time after time after time, McCain has shown — in his own words — “a fundamental misunderstanding of the issues we face, particularly in the Middle East.”

Remember when McCain REPEATEDLY (and probably intentionally) referred to "Al Qaeda in IRAN"?

Iran is Shiite, Al Qaeda is Sunni.
Iran gives as much support to Al Qaeda as the US does, very little (I hope).

McCain either is a totally senile nutcase, or he is a got-to-have-war-with-Iran-at-any-cost nutcase. My money is on BOTH.

The Average American is a barely functional idiot..simpleton..which is how Republicans get elected..

Didn't Mencken say that we would eventually elect a president as stupid as the average American or something like that..well I though that was G.W.Bush but maybe McCain is even dumber so we have yet to hit bottom or equalization..of stupidity..

After all... McCain doesn't need to know who runs Iran or whether or not it is Sunni or Shiite. All he needs to know is "bomb bomb bomb... bomb bomb Iran".

This is the EXPERIENCE candidate? I'll take the "inexperienced" candidate in that case, thank you very much.

And held as a POW for however many years in a cell is NOT foreign policy experience. And while you can argue Hillary's experience, as first lady, she DID deal personally with other countries leaders and she was a sounding board for the President whenever crises arose.

Until America can stop campaign finance abuse, lobbyist's and the election of corporate elitist's flocked in "do as I say" judeo christian tax free sound bites America will continue to suffer and find itself in the "armegeddon" syndrome gripping the nation now. PAC's controled by currently elected representative's give out billions every year to state and national candidates who know that they will need that money to win elections and are then for evermore "bought and paid for".
Washington lobbyist who represent Dafur, Burma, Oil, Drugs, Medicine and Patient Care purcha$e their agendas at the White House door and Congress at the expense of America everyday.
Will America save itself from the grip of these international corporate pirates who are bringing America down to third world status? What can "We The People" do to rid ourselves of our "bought and paid for" government. The same "bought and paid for" government that tells American citizen's lies, robs from the poor and needy, jails the innocent, turns the courts into money changers, tortures, operates "bases" of military operations over the world, uses "terrorist's" tactics to subvert other countries, looks the other way during worldwide known genocide, allows the importation of food, medicine and toys which kill thousands due to preventable safety issues, open borders, spys on American's with the help of corporation's, ---- America WAKE UP! Is this what "We The People" want to go on and on and on and on. What are "you" going to do?
