This Week in God
Steve Benen The Carpetbagger Report

I have a daughter myself, who I want to grow up to be independent and free and sensible and interesting, so I can't even imagine what it would take to bring a parent to this:

For Abdel-Qader Ali there is only one regret: that he did not kill his daughter at birth. 'If I had realised then what she would become, I would have killed her the instant her mother delivered her,' he said with no trace of remorse.

Yikes. What did she do? Become a mass murderer, a terrorist, a destroyer of entire cultures by acts of destruction?

No, nothing quite so horrific. She was guilty of puppy love.

Two weeks after The Observer revealed the shocking story of Rand Abdel-Qader, 17, murdered because of her infatuation with a British solider in Basra, southern Iraq, her father is defiant. Sitting in the front garden of his well-kept home in the city's Al-Fursi district, he remains a free man, despite having stamped on, suffocated and then stabbed his student daughter to death.

Abdel-Qader Ali is a coward and a monster, the warped product of a bestial 'civilization' that treats half its members as chattel and the other half as little better than junkyard dogs, brutes who will maintain the savage order by denying love and individuality and murdering anyone who does not precisely fit their mandated roles.

Abdel-Qader Ali is not an aberration, not some random psychopath who committed an evil and then, all alone and despised, tries to justify it. No, he's part of a whole culture that favors this violence.

Abdel-Qader, 46, a government employee, was initially arrested but released after two hours. Astonishingly, he said, police congratulated him on what he had done. 'They are men and know what honour is,' he said.

…

It was her first youthful infatuation and it would be her last. She died on 16 March after her father discovered she had been seen in public talking to Paul, considered to be the enemy, the invader and a Christian. Though her horrified mother, Leila Hussein, called Rand's two brothers, Hassan, 23, and Haydar, 21, to restrain Abdel-Qader as he choked her with his foot on her throat, they joined in. Her shrouded corpse was then tossed into a makeshift grave without ceremony as her uncles spat on it in disgust.

'Death was the least she deserved,' said Abdel-Qader. 'I don't regret it. I had the support of all my friends who are fathers, like me, and know what she did was unacceptable to any Muslim that honours his religion,' he said.

They are not men, they are abused dogs. They have no honor; honor is not blind, stupid obedience to a death cult that demands that you murder your children or your sisters for showing signs of humanity.

I count at least three tragedies here.

One is these 'men' who have had their minds corrupted by a foul religion.

The greatest is Rand Abdel-Qader herself, murdered for an infatuation.

The third is one only briefly mentioned: the mother, Leila Hussein. I wonder…does her skin crawl at having to submit to the vile creature who tortured her daughter to death, or is she sufficiently indoctrinated into the evils of her culture that she accepts it? Either way, it's a nightmare.

It's not the religion

It isn't the whole religion. It is absolutely ridiculous to associate a bunch of psychos with an entire group of people. Does Rod Parsley or John Hagee represent all Christians everywhere? There are various groups within each religion that are extremely stupid or psychotic (or both) and to say an entire religion (over a billion followers) favors such violence is ridiculous.

A Couple Things

Where to begin? On one hand I am as angry as the author. I just read that 47 women were killed in Basra alone last year via honor killings.
This is indeed sick. This is indeed extremely evil. My heart cries for the women killed, and my hatred goes out towards the men involved.
I mean, what the hell our our troops dying for over there? This!?

But on the other hand, it is quite evident that the author has some issues, and has some extreme bigotries. As the first comment to this article said, equating all Muslims with honor killings is like equating all Christians with the Revs Hagee and Parsley (who want to destroy the world by using nuclear weapons on Iran. You don't get much more evil than that.) It is like equating all Americans with the wars and torture done in our names.

I guess it is safe to say that A LOT of people in this world are fucking sick and vile and literally evil. I certainly don't have any hope for the rest of us because of this fact.

One would have thought that you, since you are using this as a personal attack forum against al-Islam, have at minimum talked to a few Muslims, used Wikipedia, and should have had a better understanding of the Qur'an.
You have fanned the flames of the David Horowitz fan base. Honor killings have as much to do with Islam as prophets sacrificing their 1st born to appease God has to do with Judaism.
Shar'ia and women wearing Burqa , niqab and abaya and beatings are man made aberrations used to subjegate women in Islamic states, as are Honor killings.
My 18 year old Muslim daughter has yet to be murdered by her Muslim Dad, so I suppose I may know a thing or eight.
Read a Qur'an with a concordance, travel outside of your 4 corners and learn. You owe readers that much.

Why is it...

that after reading about a horrible crime committed against a young girl, all we see are comments in defense of a religion? Regardless of what the Quran says or doesn't say (and I have no interest in reading it to see), these "honor killings" seem to occur mostly in Muslim nations, or among Muslim minorities. Why is that? If it's a misinterpretation of Islam, perhaps these people who got their noses out of joint over the author's "attack" on their religion should address their attention there - where innocent women and girls are getting killed - rather than doing battle against disparaging comments on an internet forum. Seems to be a serious case of misplaced priorities to me.

Because the nature of many liberals/progressives is to assume guilt?

I don't mind being called a liberal.

You have people equating blowhard asshats with murderers in the above comments.

Oh, by the way--they're doing it in the name of their pet superstition. Don't forget that.

That's because fundamentalists do not tolerate any question of their ideas. Don't forget that, either...never forget that.

That is the nature of the fundamentalist. He or she is right, no matter the cost in human suffering.

Islamic Values Are Inconsistent with Human Rights

Let's be honest. Honor killings, female genital mutilation, forced marriage of young girls to older men, wife beating and oppression of women are far more prevalent in Muslim societies than others.

Islam is not a religion of peace. Muhammad was, according to Muslim sources including the Koran, a warmonger, genocidaire, rapist, child molester, wife beater, armed robber and slaver. It is politically incorrect to point it out, but the facts are what they are. While his book may be considered divine and his life ideal in the Muslim world, civilized people of any faith or no faith are horrified. Muslims should be treated with justice and respect, and should not in any way be targeted because of their religion. We err, however, if we assume that their values are just like ours.

I don't want to lessen the statements in the article, but there is a fourth tragedy. The British soldier - how must he be feeling?

Yes, this is the freedom we send our young men and women to defend. The freedom to kill your children. Let's all hope we can enjoy the same freedom here in America soon.

The theme of the article was to put a spotlight on honor killings. All religion aside, it's horrible and unfathomable to comprehend for any parent. It's not just Muslims, it happens in other cultures as well but predominantly in the middle east. These incidents will continue until more people in the community speak out against it.

civil war in Iraq. Then, per our Constitution, let ALL religions know that they have NO place in our civil discourse. If they wish to practice their superstitious nonsense in private, they may. Should they break any laws in doing so, they will be punished to the full extent of those laws and then thrown out of the US. This includes Christian, Jewish, Islamic, Hindu, etc. Get human or get the fuck out. And piss on your misogyny and testosterone fuelled ignorance. This prick should have pike shoved up his ass and be left to die in the hot sun. NO MORE!!!
