Missouri Nuns Fight Voter Disenfranchisement

Posted by Jill Hussein C., Brilliant at Breakfast at 5:00 PM on May 9, 2008.

After their Indiana sisters were disenfranchised, Missouri nuns are mad as heck and not gonna take it anymore.

Because Nuns. Kick. Ass.

Surely, our majority-Catholic Supreme Court should have known better than to get on the wrong side of the Sisters. As we wrote earlier, the first victims of the new ruling on Voter ID were elderly nuns in Indiana. This just in, in my emailbox: The nuns of Missouri rap the Supreme Court's knuckles with a great big ruler:

Nun of the Franciscan Sisters of Mary comments on Voter ID disenfranchisement

WHO: Missourians for Fair Elections

WHAT: Press Conference on the impact of legislation to require government-issued photo ID to vote

WHEN: 1:00 PM, Thursday, May 8, 2008

WHERE: League of Women Voters, 8706 Manchester, Jefferson City, MO 63144

JEFFERSON CITY, MO – On Thursday, May 8, three Missouri voters who lack government-issued photo IDs as well as Secretary of State Robin Carnahan and community leaders will discuss the potential impacts of legislation currently being pushed through the Missouri General Assembly. The proposed legislation would make Missouri one of the toughest states in the country for eligible citizens who want to vote by requiring voters to present a government-issued photo ID at the polls. If passed, these changes could be in place by the November general election and could put the voting rights at risk for up to 240,000 registered Missouri voters.

"This may sound like a good idea at first," stated Sister Sandy Schwartz of the Franciscan Sisters of Mary regarding voter ID requirements, "but once you stop to think about who would really be affected, this is going to keep a lot of our loved ones from being able to vote." Yesterday in Indiana twelve nuns in their 80s and 90s were turned away from the polls because they lacked the needed IDs to vote. Sister Schwartz and others are concerned about the difficulties the policy change would create for elderly Missouri nuns, as well as other senior citizens, the poor, and minorities.

Awesome.

(h/t)

Editor's Note: The issue before the Missouri Legislature actually has two moving parts: a new photo ID requirement AND a proof of citizenship requirement for new voters. That second piece – requiring that voters produce papers documenting their citizenship is nothing to sneeze at. In Arizona, where such a law has been in place since 2004, approximately 17 percent or some 30,000 voter registration forms have been rejected because of the failure to produce citizenship documents. And it’s not just minorities who are affected. The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU Law School reported in November 2006 that slightly more than 50 percent of all married women lack birth certificates with their married names on it. Of course, poor people and the elderly also are disproportionately affected.

We’ll be watching Missouri next week, when the state Senate is slated to pick up the voter ID bill as it ends its legislative session. --Mike

Why should any birth certificate ever be altered to include a married name? A woman is NOT born married and her birth certificate is a legal document NOT to be tampered with! This whole scenario is ludicrous.

I just did click on the tab "Human Rights" and found no cross reference to this story. A discourse which demonstrates that women will disproportionately be affected by this inane attempt to push the "Lou Dobbs" version of "I am an American and So you are NOT!"

Women's Rights Are Human Rights.

I wonder if conservative St. Louis, MO Archbishop Raymond Burke (who would deny pro-choice Catholics communion and who staunchly opposes priesthood for women) would consider denying communion to state legislators who deny nuns the right to vote. Nah. That would mean standing up for the rights of women.

However, very Catholic St. Louis just might stand up to fight this. (They’ve been ignoring the Archbishop on several issues.)

Then it wouldn't surprise me if the State legislature amended the proposal to exclude clergy from this requirement, thereby quieting the Catholics but still disenfranchising everyone else.

Welcome to Missouri.

I'm wondering if a combination of birth certificate and marriage certificate would be an acceptable combination?

The True Indiana: South of Valparaiso

You must understand that the solid American pariots who live in the areas south of US Route 6 (at the same latitude as Valparaiso, Indiana) are a true, early 19th century mid-American breed. Excluding Indianapolis and most of the college and university towns, the people of this state live in conservative rural districts, so the voter disenfranchising law their legislature is enforcing is exactly what they need to ward off the kinds of outsiders that frighten them: papists and other such bizzare religious sects, people with dark skin, mere women running for public office, "ethnic" types whom they fear are "taking their jobs away" from them, and especially fellows with dark skin who have Semitic names ! Barack HUSSEIN Obama ? MY GOD ! HELP ! The Arabs (or are they Africans ?) are already here !
Incidentally, I submitted a letter to the editors of the NYTimes regarding their own article about the infamous Indiana law, expressing similar sentiments as above, but was refused a posting of the letter by the Times letter editor. No reason was given, but I suppose the Times was concerned about offending its readers in Indiana, thereby affecting its circulation there. Or does one suppose there ARE any NYTimes readers in rural Indiana ?
On a more personal note, an Italo-American relative of mine from New England who once attended a conference at a well known college in southern Indiana, was approached by some other members of the conference who were curious because they had never met an Italo-American ! My relative's response to them was that it was extremely surprising to meet someone who has never met an Italo-American. And that is NOT an apocryphal tale.

republicans and the republican party

have been trying to disenfranchise black and Hispanic people for the past 100 years. While there have always been individuals and groups who have fought for the voting rights of all Americans, so many others not affected could care less.

Now we see what can happen when people who might make a difference simply close their eye to injustices done to their fellow citizens. Sooner or later the same thing will be done to them.

For the record, there are no documented cases of people voting multiple times, voting using the names of dead people or any of the concoctions of the republican party.

I lived in New York City most of my life, and I now live in a very small town in Massachusetts.

I have never been asked to present a piece of identification to vote in my whole life.

White male, as if you had to ask.

The state of Missouri, just passed a law to forbid convicted felons from running for office!!! Governor Blunt signed this bill, to disqualify me from challenging him for the office, this bill was co-sponsored the first time by Jason smith in '06, to have me disqualified, during the election for state representative, when I was running against him!!! The law was struck down as unconstitutional though, so they just slid it through again in '07!!! Americans, still have the right to vote, but only for who the ruling elite, has hand picked, to be their puppets!!! This new voting law, that requires state I.D., may forbid a few people from voting, but it would qualify, every single convicted SLAVE in prison, because they have state I.D. and proof that the state of Missouri own-es them!!! Our government, can't even keep their treason's straight!!! END TERRORISM: VOTE THEM OUT!!!

Once again a BS Tactic to misrepresent teh real crime in our election process.
They need to prove 'They 'Are not Rigging elections and We'll Prove Who we are.
Please- The problem has not been with the Voters, It's been with the Politicians OWNED by Corps, The Media anD The 'Supreme' court Justices (jesters). The voters have not bought nominations, Biased the Masses Nor made ruling to Throw the results or Suppress the Voting public. Frankly I want to see some Documentation and PROOF of Allegience from those in Positons of power Who have Pulled such methods to undermine OUR Democracy!
Photo ID is fine if they go to each citizens house, and Produce such 'necessary ' ID for Free.Considering how much information they already seem to have about all of US- They can bring the supporting Information regarding OUR Legitimacy( Let them pay for the Birth certificate 'Original costs) and incur the costs of traveling to Each Of US.Who works for Hwhom in this country- It's time We put them back in their Place- Brick & Mortar,Mere TOOLS at our disposal in this Demcratic Free Society. 'I Don't need No Stinkin Badge' But these Instruments of Democaracy do -Prove to US you are worth keeping employed & Fed!These Uppity TOOLS need to be put back in their Place- Or Discarded!

So who's organizing voters to get ID?

OK, this policy is antidemocratic and will disenfranchise many citizens. It would be good if we could untangle it before elections in November. But meanwhile, just in case, shouldn't there be a campaign to get everybody in possession of I.D.? The I.D. process is time-consuming and the time to start is right now.

Anybody know who's doing this?

Voter ID for those who move

My niece almost ran afoul of this law in Indiana. In a recent move the box containing her Indiana photo ID and her Pennsylvania Birth Certificate was lost.

To get a new photo ID, you need a birth certificate. To get a Pennsylvania Birth Certificate, you need a photo id. Lucky for her at some point I had copied her photo ID on my PC and so she was able to use that to order a new birth certificate to get the new ID. If she had not had that copy, she would have been caught in the catch 22 of the Republican idea of how to keep citizens from voting.

There is, however, a loophole in the Indiana law created for those mostly GOP citizens who spend their Novembers in the sunny South. They can vote via absentee ballot and not have to show any identification.

Just in case you are wondering there has never been a case of voter fraud in Indiana at the polls but there have been plenty of documented frauds with absentee voting.

Need anything else to show how this law discriminates??
