Really? Newsflash Rummy, not for everyone. So who's to blame? Anyone who didn't loudly object and resign if the plan to invade Iraq went forward. First on the list is Colin Powell. It's a very long list and gets longer everyday. The wrong people are in Guantanamo. We should empty it out and fill it with all the people who thought this was such a wonderful idea. He sounds like the stereotypical politician in the business of war profiteering - make a big mess, overcharge the taxpayer for cleaning it up, and then blame the whole schemozzle on the professional soldiers...

Historical revisionism for the purposes of covering one's own butt for posterity must be exhausting work. He'd better get used to it though: he'll need to do a lot more of it before history forgives him for this fiasco (and hopefully history never will).

politicians are usually not expected to be military experts.

west point and anapolis supposedly turn out well-trained officers with knowledge of military history and ancient and modern tactics and strategy.

the officers also swear to their duty to this country, not to the highest bidder.

so, what did the highest ranking officers in this country do? refuse to fight without sufficient men and materiel? demand that the constitutional rules for fighting a foreign war be followed?

demand decent equipment and medical care for the troops they, and i use the word loosely, led? mongolia is a poor country, but the troops they sent to iraq were better equipped than the american. who was the officer who replied to the question about decent armor by saying that american troops weren't interested in having decent armor?

give the soldiers the same loyalty they expect from the soldiers?

tell americans the truth?

resign in protest?

You pick a third rate three-star general and promote him. This way you've got yourself a very willing slave. Petraeus is an inexperienced and vastly overrated general officer, with most of his appointments being desk jobs until the first Iraq "so-called" war. He saw what little combat he can claim, as a two-star general and anyone who has experienced combat knows only too well how close to actual combat a two-star general gets. He's all show and no go. I've served for 30 years plus and have never seen such a phony-decorated officer and I've seen quite a few hypocrites. Those in the know will want to know when exactly he earned that "combat' badge that tops his many medals/ribbons. As I said, general officers get very little opportunity to earn that badge and he obviously didn't rate it until he first saw combat as a general. I assume he was somewhere near, "in the vicinity",(within a mile or two, perhaps) of a combat operation, as is the case with most of these damn phonies. The same holds true for his Bronze Star, which is the single most abused and degraded award to come out of the so-called Vietnam war.
The correct description of Petraeus, with his medal bedecked blouse is, "poppinjay". Our military is starting to look like the old Soviet veterans who had medals from their adam's apple to their kneecaps.
It's all very pathetic and reflective of a military which is having a hell of a hard time recruiting and retaining cannon fodder.
It is a common sight nowadays for our enlisted personnel to sport three or four rows of ribbons and they have yet to even leave the country.

...........and war crimes. And let's include Bushit, Cheney, Rice, Feith, Wolfie, and anyone else who advocated an unprovoked war. Hang them in public and on TV. Make their families watch. Or throw them in solitary and use them for AIDS experiments. Sounds nasty, right? But consider what THEY have done to thousands of innocents while they sit comfortably and safely at home. This bullshit (unnecessary war) must stop.

When I was a cadet, I met Mr Rumsfeld and listened to him speak. This was long before Pres Bush took office and Rumsfeld was "Just and Enron employee"... I thought he reminded me of a used car salesman. GEN Shinseki stood by his troop request and was shunned by the admin because he wouldn't tow the line. He left the service of his country instead of doing something he knew would cost more US lives. Now we see he was right. Rummy did not accept troop requests above what he wanted, therefore he gets to say they didn't ask for more troops. To the Generals that did what they knew to be wrong in order to get that next star, shame on you. You did not do what leaders are supposed to do. You did not stand for what is right, and you did not take care of your troopers.
