O'Reilly: It's Bull That Torture Doesn't Work

Bill O'Reilly has watched a few too many episodes of 24.
waterboarding

Last night, in an interview with Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY), Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly praised the Bush administration “for doing a good job protecting Americans after 9/11″ and attributed its success to its “aggressive manner” of protection, including “Guantanamo, water boarding three times, and other things.” (Recall, in 2005, O’Reilly declared he would “order the execution” of everyone at Guantanamo if he could.)

O’Reilly then questioned Clinton’s opposition to torture, insisting that if the U.S. had “an al Qaeda big shot” in custody, he would “dunk him into water” — i.e., waterboard him. When told that torture does not produce “high quality” information, O’Reilly cried, “That’s bull!”:

O’REILLY: I believe the Bush administration has done a good job in protecting Americans after 9/11. … And they’ve done so in a very aggressive manner, Guantanamo, water boarding three times, and other things, OK? If we get an Al Qaida big shot who won’t talk, I’ll dunk him into water if there is, we believe — our intelligence agency believes there is an imminent attack. You won’t dunk him in the water, you won’t, I will. […]

CLINTON: But if you actually talked to the people who were in the rooms with these guys, what they will tell me is that you do not get the high quality…

O’REILLY: That’s bull. It’s just bull. Michael Scheuer, who was the head of the bin Laden unit, sat there and said we broke these guys by waterboarding. It’s bull.

Watch it:

O’Reilly has long championed torture. He said that waterboarding isn’t “fatal” and “doesn’t leave a lasting injury,” and that people who oppose torture are “putting us all in danger.” Last October, he claimed that the Abu Ghraib scandal “was blown out of proportion.”

Of course, many experts — O’Reilly’s own opinion notwithstanding — agree that torture is ineffective. In Feburary, FBI Director Robert Mueller said his agency rejected using waterboarding, and Lt. Gen. Michael Maples of the Defense Intelligence Agency said torture was unnecessary. Another former FBI agent said the entire idea of a “ticking time bomb scenario” like the one O’Reilly cites is “a red herring” his agency had never encountered."

If those experts aren’t enough, perhaps O’Reilly should simply listen to his hero Gen. David Petraeus, who unequivocally rejected torture last year:

Some may argue that we would be more effective if we sanctioned torture or other expedient methods to obtain information from the enemy. That would be wrong. Beyond the basic fact that such actions are illegal, history shows that they also are frequently neither useful nor necessary. Certainly, extreme physical action can make someone ‘talk;’ however, what the individual says may be of questionable value.

After all, as O’Reilly himself said, “Petraeus is beyond reproach in my eyes.”

The U.S. has an "al Qaeda big shot" in custody and they tortured him.

Then they destroyed the tapes of his torture and all the notes about what went on while he was subjected to "enhanced interrogation" (roughly the same term the Nazis used to describe their torture program). Allegedly, the guy fingered three members of the Saudi government and one high officer in the Pakistani military. All three Saudis were killed within a week, all allegedly due to "accidents." It took a little longer for the Pakistani to be killed, but he is dead, too.

No one in the U.S. has made any use at all of this information. Moreover, it is important to note that the information was not divulged during the lengthy series of torture sessions, it was freely discussed when one of the interrogators posed as a Saudi, which they could have done without using any torture.

I saw that interview with Clinton.. was actually pretty good. O 'Reilly came across a bit aggressive but it made Hillary look all the more reasonable and even tempered. Her answers were logical and thought process clear . A good move on here part.

As for waterboarding, O'Reilly is correct..it doesn't leave any lasting injuries. But Petraeus is correct in his assessment also. A commander would never publicly endorse such actions for fear of how his troops would be treated if captured.

I have no problem with waterboarding someone as described by O'Reilly but I agree that the information might be suspect at best!

I was disappointed that both Clinton and Obama appeared on Fox.

Forget O'Reilly and go after Dick Cheney.

Impeach Cheney--hospitalize Bush.

Immediately.

such as ptsd. in the prisoners and in the witnesses to the torture.

the degradation of america's reputation among even semi-civilized nations.

creating monsters out of military personnel--who will be returning to civilian life among us, and to their families.

none of these are physical.

o'reilly is either willing to say anything, no matter how ridiculous, in order to make his guests look bad, or he is psychotic.

The best way to prove that it's both safe and effective would be to try it himself on live TV. They should waterboard him and see if he'll admit he never knows what the **** he's talking about.

The trouble is, there are quite a few mentally lazy people out there who watch retards like Bill O'Reilly and ape their opinions and attitudes simply because, hey, the guy must be right, he's on TV, isn't he? Sadly, dimwits like these are also voters.

Mobsters, druglords, and pimps would routinely torture those who had cheated them out of money or information. Usually, the victims will painfully squeal out a satisfactory response.

How much longer will America put up with the corporate media crap spewed from the likes of 'talking bush-bots?'

Sadly, O'Reilly's ratings are probably better than Dubya's, eh. Hasn't 'the decider's tanked with less than a 30% national approval rating?

Looks like some Americans are awakening from the delusion they bought from the 'unfair & 'unbalanced' torturous 'Bill-shite.'

Good work citizens; speak out please, against 'torture,' hence ---the "BULL" of O'Reilly.

Just Another Monster Who Is Literally The Devil Incarnate

Bill O'Reilly's defense of torture -- of TORTURE, god damn it! -- should make it clear to all who didn't have a clue until now that Bill O'Reilly is literally the Devil incarnate. (like Cheney, like Scalia, like President Bush, like Condi Rice, like Alberto Gonzales, like Rumsfeld, like Ashcroft, like...) Our society is f***king sick if people like him are allowed to keep lying in private, let alone on TV.

And Hillary, by going on O'Reilly, has given this monster a little legitimacy. You see, Bill O'Reilly MUST be "fair and balanced" after all. 'Cause him had dat dare DEMOCRAT womun on hiz show.

Torture is Anti-American

Bush could only behave in this primitive manner by ignoring basic American principles. Torture falls into the realm of the lazy, the stupid and the pseudo-tough. To try anyone after torture on the basis of tortured confessions is way beyond the pale. Give me unlimited power and a week and I could have Cheney confessing to fathering Julie Nixon. Give me 2 weeks and I would have Cheney believing it ala the novel 1984 by Orwell.
The problem with giving a political leader that kind of power over our "Terrorist" enemies is that they now can do that to you and me given the proper whim.

What to do about torture supporters?
Posted by: Chaos Motor on May 3, 2008 2:36 PM

I suggest we torture them. We ought to set up a nationwide campaign where we kidnap and torture any media or government figure that indicates support for torture. Perhaps if they were directly exposed to the activities they encourage others to engage in, they might be a little more discerning about what they support.

Self-inflicted torture...

The argument that torture saves lives is a seductive one, but many lives are lost in terms of phychological damage in the act of torturing. Many German concentration camps guards suffered severe mental stress from the barbarities they committed. The rest, presumably, were psychopaths.
