Which Is Worse: the Pentagon or the Media?

Posted by Digby, Hullabaloo at 9:57 AM on April 29, 2008.

The Pentagon says it's halting its propaganda program, but the news media is still quite about its role in leading us to war.

Apparently the Defense Department felt the pressure - I have no idea from whom - sufficient to stop feeding information to retired generals who play pundits on TV.

(Robert Hastings, principal deputy assistant secretary of Defense for public affairs) said he is concerned about allegations that the Defense Department's relationship with the retired military analysts was improper.

"Following the allegations, the story that is printed in the New York Times, I directed my staff to halt, to suspend the activities that may be ongoing with retired military analysts to give me time to review the situation," Hastings said in an interview with Stripes on Friday.

Hastings said he did not discuss the matter with Defense Secretary Robert Gates prior to making his decision. He could not say Friday how long this review might take.

"We'll take the time to do it right," he said.

Funny, because there has not been one stitch of coverage of this important issue in virtually any broadcast news outlet, while the retired generals remain on their payrolls. You'd think that for the Pentagon to shut down a program that gave them obvious benefits, they would have to feel some public outcry, which would arise from, you know, wide reporting on the matter. True, Democrats are finally coming around to speaking out about this issue, including Rep. Ike Skelton (chair of the House Armed Services Committee), Rep. Rosa DeLauro and even the Presidential candidates. Certainly, Skelton could haul Pentagon brass into hearings and make things very uncomfortable, and their suspension of the program could be a pre-emptive strike. But the fact that DeLauro sent letters to the heads of the television networks asking for details about the Pentagon pundits, and while the Defense Department shut down the program, the broadcast media did ZIPPO, shows you how deeply corrupt and desirous of avoiding responsibility they are.

In fact, I would go so far as to say that the Pentagon, George Bush's Pentagon, is showing themselves to be MORE accountable to the public than the traditional broadcast media. That's a pretty low bar, and the media couldn't get over it. On the other hand, they must be really proud of the Miley Cyrus topless story.

Glenn Greenwald has more.

the power of the military is augmented by the propaganda of our complicit media.

I don't understand the question. Isn't the MSM just a subsidiary of the Pentagon . . .

which is a subsidiary of Bush, Inc., which is a subsidiary of Corporatocracy International? How can you really separate them to make such a comparison?

And as for why the cash for brass program is on hold, I am sure it is just to allow a cost benefit analysis. Why pay for top brass to read the talking points when the non-investigative reporters of the MSM have shown they can do the job just as reliably without the extra overhead?

I have to ask. What have the "liberal" news sources such as NPR and CNN and MSNBC been saying about all of this?? Well, some of the military analysts are on those media organizations' payrolls. You would THINK, since those media outlets are SSSOOOO "liberal", that they would plead for mercy from their viewers for their bad judgment in hiring the propaganda-spewing analysts.
But let me take a guess, since I have not been watching/listening to any of these outlets, that they have been mum. Just a guess.

Both are tearing the country apart. The Pentagon for what it does while they know it's wrong and the media for treating important news as though it were a creative writing assignment. Or worse, not reporting it at all if it doesn't meet whatever their standards are. I admit that recent reports about military personnel selling out their own makes me sick. Congrats to the NY Times. I think a better question is "Which is worse: the Pentagon, the Media, or our congress". Our Senate and Congress know that much of anything the mainstream media and the Pentagon will make public needs indepth verification and are not reliable in giving a full or completely honest story when it comes to national affairs.
The 9-11 commission scam is a glowing(from molen steel sturture)example. It was a joint excersize involving all involved groups that made it possible to deceive the majority of the public. The same is true with the criminal invasions into both Afghanistan and Iraq. There was never a real justification, and many in all of these groups knew it. Were they bribed or threatened, or were they making corporate profits, which? Protecting the people of the US was never the real concern. And the Media, the Pentagon, and our Congress had the power to access the truth on demand, and it was not a "mistake" but out right lies of the Bush Administration, and most of them knew it, or should have knew it. They should have looked.

As bad as this damned government (and everything to do with it) is, the media is far, far worse. Remember the Fleetwood Mac song, "Murrow Turning Over In His Grave"? The poor guy must be spinning at the speed of light at this point. Our journalists are just mouthpieces of our corporatocracy and parrots of the administration. As a whole, they make the Soviet Union's PRAVDA seem objective. While they worship at the altar of Matt Drudge and at the feet of their corporate masters, our country continues to circle the drain on its way to a FASCIST HELL! If it weren't for the internet (which they'll soon figure out a way to subvert, too), we'd never know the TRUTH about ANYTHING! How soon until this place turns into another North Korea? Aren't we just abot there already?
