It’s no secret that MoveOn.org members have been very supportive of Barack Obama’s candidacy – endorsing him with a 70% vote, raising lots of small dollar donations for him, sending hundreds of thousands of personal endorsement emails to friends and family before key primaries and caucuses, and making over 1,000 30-second ads on his behalf (one of which will soon air on national TV). We’re excited about his candidacy, and we think he’ll make a great president. But Obama did himself, the Democratic Party, and the progressive movement a disservice this weekend.

It was a mistake for Obama to go on FOX’s Sunday show and treat the experience as if it was a real news interview. Democratic politicians need to understand that FOX is a Republican mouthpiece masquerading as a news outlet. When dealing with FOX, you either burn them or they will burn you.

It's well documented that FOX executives send morning memos to anchors and reporters dictating Republican talking points. In 2006, one said, “Be on the lookout for any statements from the Iraqi insurgents...thrilled at the prospect of a Dem controlled Congress.” Robert Greenwald's videos have shown FOX's consistent pattern of smearing Barack Obama, smearing Hillary Clinton, smearing African Americans, and denying global warming.

FOX's power lies not in its audience size – which is puny and consists mostly of unpersuadable voters. Instead, FOX's power comes from tricking politicians and real journalists into treating their “breaking stories” like real news, thereby propelling smears like the Swift Boats and Rev. Wright into the mainstream political dialogue. That's why progressives fought (successfully) last year to deprive FOX of the legitimacy that comes with hosting a Democratic presidential debate. And that's why Democratic politicians should never treat FOX like a real news outlet - including FOX's Sunday show.

Barack Obama's campaign made a promise before this weekend's appearance. They said he would "take Fox on" – inspiring hope among those who watched Bill Clinton in 2006, Chris Dodd in 2007, and progressive activist Lee Camp in 2008 delegitimize FOX on the air. But Obama didn't do that, and he suffered as a result.

Excerpts from Obama's FOX interview:

The interview began with a question about Obama's race – implying that white people won’t vote for him. Instead of “taking FOX on” and saying FOX’s questions are premised on Republican talking points, Obama simply answered. So, Wallace kept going – asking more than 10 straight race-related questions, all skewed against Obama. (One laughably began with, "I wasn’t sure whether I was even going to ask you about your former pastor, Jeremiah Wright, but...") One of these rigged questions got Obama to say, "The fact that he is my former pastor I think makes it a legitimate political issue" – resulting in John McCain quoting Obama hours later, hinting to right-wing allies that Rev. Wright is fair game.

FOX also asked a bunch of questions aimed at getting Obama to distance himself from Democrats and progressives. Because Obama didn't "take on" the Republican framing of these questions, Obama was cornered into saying things like, "I think there are a whole host of areas where Republicans in some cases may have a better idea [than Democrats]" and parroting the right-wing caricature of "Chablis-drinking limousine liberals" and boasting about being "fiercely attacked" by bloggers at Daily Kos.

Enough. Democratic politicians, for your own benefit: stop legitimizing FOX.

Would someone please give Barack some one liners to use over and over when he's backed into a corner? Doesn't even matter if they contatin an ounce of truth or even make sense. For example, he could say: "Hillary Clinton was born the same year a UFO alledgedly crashed in Roswell, New Mexico. Makes you think, doesn't it?" It wouldn't take long for FOX to put together a graphic: "Is Hillary an Alien?"

This is America - no one wants to hear well-conceived, intellectual, intelligent arguements! We don't have time with all the shopping...

I think he was just fine. WHY does anyone think it is a good idea to make Faux an issue and open up that can of worms with EIGHT DAYS till the next primaries? He would have played right into their hands if he had 'taken on Fox' to some's satisfaction. Not enough he is 'taking on' the Clintons, not enough he is 'taking on' the traditional dem party, not enough he has PROMISED to take the high road, just not enough.

JESUS CHRIST! He already has to deal with Rev. Wright, the press is already milking that. Barack Obama is 'taking on' racism, but that isn't enough.

I don't care if Move.on or anyone else thinks Barack should have taken off the gloves when Wallace was interviewing him.

I DON'T CARE! Don't you get it? Obama took on FAUX just by going on FAUX, he walked into the lion's den and that is more than good enough for me, he did it just right. As I have said before, very classy, stayed on message, just in time to 'take on' the fallout from his minister.

Barack Obama is walking a very very very fine line and he is doing it with grace and dignity and honesty we rarely see these days in politics. I am proud to support him.

"But suppose God is black? What if we go to Heaven and we, all our lives, have treated the Negro as an inferior, and God is there, and we look up and He is not white? What then is our response?"

... he's no different than anyone else in Washington... he'd kiss a wookie if it brought him one vote. Democrats, like Republicans, have no scruples. Why so bloody shocked?

Vote for Ralph Nader if you want actual integrity, experience, and leadership. But America is a corporation brokered by only two polarized, narrow, and corrupt views. The Dems and the Repubs. Just because one is extra insane doesn't mean the other is going to change policy... in the least.

Hillary and Obama have already confirmed continued wars and will continue the occupation of Iraq. Democrats and Republicans are only differ slightly in there domestic policy and willingness to be openly racist garbage.

So, Moveon is mad at Obama for appearing on FOX? I'm not surprised. The fact they are goes to show that that's all this is... a show. The polical one. The one with the dogs and the ponys.

It will take more than what the Dems have to change America. REAL change. And America needs real change, NOW. Not yet another dog and pony show.

The Democrats have as finalists the two least experienced, least- articulate and baggage-heavy politicians of the group that started running for President. We could have had Edwards and settled for this?

All of you whiners just shut the hell up and get off of Obama's ass, okay? The man is trying his best to run a campaign against impossible odds. He is trying so hard to bring a new tenor to politics and keeps hitting the brick wall of a media-saturated society that wants blood rather than honest discourse. Unlike Hilary who keeps hitting us over the head that she's a woman and we have a sexist society (duh), Obama hasn't brought race into his campaign, but everyone else (especially his enemies) have. He hasn't whined about being a black man in a country that still cannot be honest about its racist past (and present) running for the highest office in the land. Obama has shown grace under fire, trying to get people to talk TO each other rather than AT each other. He wants to talk about the issues--everyone ELSE wants to talk about fucking flag pins and Rev. Jeremiah Wright, like either of those two things are going to help the average American keep a roof over their heads or be able to pay for health care. He knows many of the ignorant Archie Bunker contingent in this country would rather go to hell and take their families with them than ever cast a vote for him because of his race, and yet he keeps trying to reach out and get them to see he understands what they're going through. When he tells the truth, people put him down and call him "an elitist". He went on Fox and stood up to them--and they LOST! They spent an entire week building up how they were going to ask him "the tough questions" and all they asked are the same boring soundbites we've already heard. So much for their "in-depth" probing. They were a joke! Chris Wallace may be looking for a new job because you can bet your sweet little bippys that his handlers weren't pleased with his interviewing style.

It's easy to be happy with a candidate when things are going well; it's when things are not going well that separates those with balls and those who lost them a long time ago. I've got my balls, what about the rest of you? I'm sticking with Barack Hussein Obama until the very end. If he's not our standard-bearer, then so be it--as long as there's a democrat in the White House.

In the long run, that's what matters most.

I'm not one to accept sound bites or edited versions of interviews at face value...not from conversative sources nor progressive ones.

So I went to youtube and watched and listened to the entire interview. First the interview was not as bad as this article claims. Second, Obama does a great job in the interview. He answers the questions honestly and thoroughly, with a frankness that we rarely hear coming from politicians.

Obama was right to finally go on Fox News. I'm no fan of their network at all and consider it a propaganda machine for neo-cons. Regardless of the sland evident in the interview, Obama was able to get his message out, to demonstrate his firm grasp of the issues and his ability to work with Republicans as well as Democrats.

We do have anti monopoly laws in America

So in "liberal' America we can expect to see all opposing media to eventually disappear?. Much like Venezuela? It is evident liberals do not like losing the monopoly they once held on the media.

It's about time Obama went on Fox. I saw the interview and it was actually quite good and respectful. Fox news is no worse than say Huffington post, who is nothing more than a mouth peice for democrats, or the NYT, who is totally innaccurate and far left in their positions.

Lets face it, because you don't like a particular media outlet, doesn't mean they do not serve a purpose and are "real news" .

All one has to do is listen to Keith Olbermann's trash "reporting, if you can call it that, or those of his type to understand personal opinions are considered before news in all media!

damn straight.

now, can we talk about how Clinton's campaign:

- did Murdoch FUNDRAISERS?
- agreed to have Fox do HER CAMPAIGN coverage?
- TOOK MONEY from Murdoch?
- agreed to do a Fox moderated / transmitted DEBATE?
- likes union busting as MUCH AS Ann COULTER's dear ol' Dad? May 31, 2007, The Nation: Clinton Campaign Strategists Closely Tied to Union Busters, GOP Operatives, Conservative Media
- even TOUTS how "Fair & Balanced" Fox is... again, & again... while,
- while Karl dissects Clinton as 'Clintons Operate In The Gutter'" jesus, did Karl actually tell the TRUTH about something crooked? well, Bush's Brain would KNOW, wouldn't he?

ALL WHILE LOVING THE NAFTA, while pretending she's not a part of the NAFTA & "NAFTA on Steroids" SPP push that:
- rapes national natural resources,
- pillages delicate ecologies,
- undermines democratic oversight,
- privatizes essential, but traditionally **public** services / resources
- & hamstrings unions...

wake up.

THE FOX IS IN THE CHICKEN COOP: the Democratic Party, too.

Don't be fooled by Barrack Obama. HE's as Black as Clarence Thomas...he's as corporate as Hillary and her Wal Mart genesis...he's as genuine as red dye #3. Sly corporate America is, they have three candidates dressed and choreographed in such a way as to confuse and distort. He is their man.
No one wants to hear this, but, there are 2 choices, really, one of these 3 or a third party candidate. The libertarians are merely Republicans who smoke dope and read Penthouse...so that's no choice. Nader seems to be the only real option.

Although I was disappointed that both these men were smeared again, it will not do either of them any lasting harm. The contrast between Obama's thoughtful statements and everyone elses' is vast and arresting.

We all know that Fox is Republican wannabe's attack machine and if we find anything true on that station, it is strictly a miracle.

Reverend Wright is doing what prophets have always done and should be left alone to do and say what everyone else is too cowardly to mention-- that powerful cliques of our nation are racist, sexist, ageist, greedy xenophobes and homophobic cannibals whose mouths are full of guile. They never met a prejudice they didn't like and use to the fullest.

Ignore them. They belong to the trash bin of history.

...milk toast at best and herein lies the problem.

Obama's ONLY outrage in this campaign, that I am aware of is against the only person that has spoken any truth, Rev Wright.

Yes, Wright. I have seen every "controversial" comment he has made in its full context and have yet to hear anything that is incorrect. You may not like the message, but the message is correct. Correct me if I am wrong.

Obama has talked in platitudes but has not backed them up with real progressive ideals. The comments of Wright wrecked the platitudes that Obama ran his campaign on and he threw him under an asphalt paver, along with any values he supposedly espoused. All this did was show him for the shallow person he was all along.

What we have here are two corporate whores , just one worse than the other (Clinton), running a Kerry script again, just a different tack on the wind surf board.

Right now McCain is a 50-50 bet to win after the worst 8 year period of Repukian government in history. Anyone that thinks either of these two losers has a chance, I have some Enron stock I would like to sell you.

A sure sign that this country is finish would be that american are dumb enough to elect John McCain. Let me say this and I will be finish with this country; I served 30 year in military the same time John Mccain did and I know that he can be tough, but he is no match for that Company crowd(republician establishment) they will do to him the same things that they did to Reagan and Bush 1&2 kept them in dark and feed them sh-t; he would be no more than a front man. If working class americans cannot see the damage that the last 8 years of republicain control has done to this country and the world then, ladies and gentlemans a lots of good citizens has wasted their lives for a country full of fools. Lets be candid here, we know that the only people that will vote republicains are the Reagan democrates(wink, wink) and those people that believe because you are white you are a republicans;at this stage this country is no more than the 21st century version of the Nazi regime.

how can anyone even obama stay above the fray when right wing radio and television are going to twist and attack anything he says.
the right wing has spent decades perfecting their attack methods and they stick to it very well. just listen to people who listen only to the right wing sound machine they all say the same things , TALKING POINTS, they make no bones about it they stay on message and so do their good little followers.
so i have to agree with move on .org on this one , we should not treat them like a real news org

Propaganda Machines: the purpose for all "news" channels.

It is a bit late for even the AlterNet to admit that this medium and the MSM are designed to be propaganda machines.

Ever since the demise of Edward R. Murrow, that has been the predominant function of the "news" channels and programs.

For every story there is an underlying message: the "massage" of the mind.

Each "news story" gives "penetration" into a "market." That market is the mind of the viewer.

The purveyor of the propaganda piece says, using the "story," we want you to think about this, and we want you to feel this way about it . . .

There are no exceptions.

There are NO exceptions.

Divide and conquer. Black folk are the only ones that have to answer for their associates. Unfortunately we fall for the divide and conquer tricks leveled.

Barack needs to do like Republicans/rightwingers/conservatives when they are associated with racist, they embraces them and refuse to repudiate them...ie Mccain embracesing Hagee for example.

Fox news, hannity and the crew are masters of deception and taking things off issues. Lapel pins, pastors, everything but ISSUES!

They love the diversions because they know that if you stick to the issues, their nominee by default, McCain has no chance.

The Flag is a symbol of unity so what's the problem?
Posted by: riotoustanpdx on Apr 30, 2008 4:02 PM
Current rating: 1    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
There is irony in Obama not wearing the flag symbol, because the flag itself is a symbol of the unity of ALL THE PEOPLE who make up the union of fifty states.

Maybe he has no clue what the flag is a symbol of.

We, The People, are the State.

How can a candidate not know what that is about, while claiming to "form a coalition of diverse people" throughout the country?

How can a genuine builder of unity not know that the flag is meant to be the symbol of the coalition that he pretends to restore, or improve on?

He should have done the opposite of refusing to wear the flag pin. He should have made a bold statement to the effect that the UNITY symbolized by the flag also represents the UNITY of his program of reaching out for bipartisan support from all segments of society.

Either he views the flag as a symbol of a divided country and people, slanted the way Rev. Wright sees the country, OR, he is disingenuous about the unity he purports to represent.

The appearance on FOX was intended to calm some of the fears that are pervasive among FOX viewers. He's running o be the President for ALL Americans, and though I may not like it when MY guy ails to "kick ass" on people I dislike, it will probably be for the best in the long run.

He's certainly not the most progressive choice (that would have been Kucinich, whom I backed for as long as he was in the race) but he's the best of those remaining. My 89 year old, white Republican mother voted for Obamain the primary and will vote for him in Nov.

Let's see, the other choices with any chance of winning are...

Rather than berate him for his FOX appearance, we should encourage him in fighting for the things we believe in. Getting out of Iraq, national health care, "fair" trade initiatives, a real energy policy that expands conservation and encourages green alternatives to fossil fuels.
